I was very surprised at the improved flame over the original unit I replaced. Our burner stand is a Brinkmann and didn't work very well. My old burner did not look much different in design and was rusted. However the original one always produced a yellowish flame and stained the bottom of pans with soot; I thought I might be using the wrong fuel (propane). This new one burns clean at low or high settings and when wide open is very impressive, almost scary, in heating the pot quickly. Too bad Brinkmann didn't use this design in their units.

Excellent burner. Flame so clear and blue that you can hardly see it. Definitely puts out the heat. These burners are bullet proof, great price to boot. These burners did not come with the standard propane gas orifice but then if you are replacing the burner on your old system, you can use the orifice from the old one. It needs to be a 1/8th national pipe threaded orifice and that is pretty much standard on these systems.

I bought this along with the new stainless-braided 10psi controller. The controller is great. Wish I could say the same about this. It's basically the same as the one it's replacing, which means that it's cast-iron, poorly finished. That means that leaving it outside for one or two periods of rainy weather will turn it to a pile of rust. I don't know what they use to "paint" this thing, but it doesn't work. So, before this new one goes into service (and into a life of rain/humidity) I'm going to disassemble it. Then it gets a good wire-brushing and a couple of coats of Rustoleum High-Temp manifold enamel. That ought to keep it usable for a lot longer than it is in its factory finish. I recommend that you do the same thing. And while you're at it. you can smooth off the rough spots in the burner area which will make the flame a bit more uniform.

Otherwise, it's a good companion for the 10psi controller.

Honest reviews on Bayou Classic BG10 High Pressure Cast-Iron Replacement Burner

I bought this burner to go in a homemade fish cooker/crawfish boiler made from a 16" tire rim. I wanted to post a picture but couldn't figure out how to do that. The burner sits in the hole for the axle and is about 4" from the bottom of the pot. I welded angle iron legs on it and short pieces of flat iron on top for the pot to sit on. This burner can be turned down for frying or jacked up for boiling crawfish or shrimp. Unless it gets hit by something hard it should last many many years! Puts out a good blue flame too.

I've been searching almost two years for a leave-in instant-read meat thermometer for grilling steaks. I just used these last night, and they performed beautifully. Quick response time, leave-in durability, glow-in-the-dark dials, and the length is perfect for a steak. I stuck one in the middle of the long edge of the steak and another straight in toward the center from a short edge, which gave me temperature indications for two different critical points exact center and halfway to the center from the end.

I was, at first, a little wary of using a thermometer that only lists "target temperatures" on it (and I don't advise anyone to trust that 145º is Rare), and so I almost skipped this entirely, but looking at the pictures I noticed that there's a rim you can use as a gauge... and, estimating from the spacing between 145, 160, and 170 (the marked target), it seemed the gauge started at somewhere between 120º and 125º my target temperature at which I take the steaks off the grill (the steak continues cooking while resting, and the center temperature will continue to rise).

Last night, I took the steak off as soon as it got to the beginning of the gauge on the center thermometer (the end thermometer was just a hair into the gauge), and I got a perfect medium-rare steak after ten minutes of resting under foil.

Pros: Accurate, fast response while designed to leave in the grill for constant monitoring

Cons: Only lists three "target temperatures" rather than a fully numbered gauge, might not be dishwasher safe

The packaging doesn't say whether the thermometers can be cleaned in the dishwasher, so I'll be hand-washing them just to be safe.

I purchased a set of these locally. The concept is pretty neat. However, these thermometers can't take barbecue grilling temperatures:

To me, a proper table-ready steak is an inch thick, charred on the outside, and cooked rare to medium-rare in the center.

The first time I tried to use one of these, I grilled the first side of the steak without the thermometer. When that side was about right, I flipped the steak over, inserted the thermometer, and proceeded to grill the other side.

Unfortunately, by the time the steak reached the medium-rare point, the paint on the dial of the thermometer had darkened so much from the heat that it was no longer legible.

(The dial no longer glows in the dark either, but it never glowed brightly enough that I could read it on the grill without a flashlight.)

Thought these would be a great item to have when cooking steaks etc. because everyone seems to want their steaks cooked differently! Put one in one steak and it never registered anything? Put another into different steak and by the time it registered medium the steak was well done? Complete waste of money!

I was a bit nervous about ordering these diffusers, after reading reviews. When I did receive them, I was pleasantly surprised. Stainless steel certainly will perform better than the original painted steel. Although not a perfect replacement part for my grill, two holes were missing that would fit over placement pegs, but that presented no problem. Since I don't move my grill place to place, I merely snapped the pegs off, thus requiring no drilling of holes in the diffusers. They fit perfectly, look great, and I expect a long life for them. I would surely recommend them to anyone. Great quality and a great price.

The holes did not line up with my grill. I had to drill holes in the corners to get the heat diffusers to fit on my grill. The description for this product did list my grill.

Parts work just fine. We had to drill holes to fit our Sears grill, but they work! Hope the stainless steel last longer than the rusted painted ones we replaced.

Honest reviews on PayandPack 15 1/16" x 5 1/2" MBP 96781 (4-Pack) BBQ Barbeque

These were not an exact match and we had to drill holes at the top of each diffuser plate in order for

them to hook onto the pegs molded on the inside of the grill to hold them in place, but other than that,

they fit just like the originals. Sears gave a complete run around on the phone when I called attempting

to replace these under warranty as the grill indicated they were. I received the diffuser plates in 3 days

and was quite pleased with the quality and transaction.

The flame deflectors are a nice fit on my BBQ. The only issue that I have is that when I buy an item that says it is replacement part for my BBQ, I expect it to be ready to set in my grill and start cooking. I had to drill two holes in each plate so that it could slide over the pegs in my BBQ. Now that I have modified to fit..... they look and work great.

This is a great gadget to have if you like to barbeque a lot or a little. It's great for turning ribs, steaks, hot-dogs, etc. I looked through all of my local stores and could not find a tool like this anywhere so I started searching online. This is a great value at only $9.95. I found similar items that were shorter in length and longer in price. The meat flips quickly and effortlessly saving time and the length is perfect to reach over most grills without getting burned.

This meat hook looks odd, but it will let you turn any meat and not have it fall off the grill...Great gadget for tailgait party.

Best Deals for Outset QB53 Rosewood and Stainless Steel Meat Hook

The only complaint I have about this product is that if you use it while camping, over an open fire it is too short.

Honest reviews on Outset QB53 Rosewood and Stainless Steel Meat Hook

My folks are retired and have started the snow bird travel with their fifth wheel, this year when they stopped by on their way back home, they barbequed up some rib eye steaks for dinner, my dad had one of these "meat hooks" or "pig tails" to flip the steaks, making it so much nicer and easier.

I searched all the BBQ stores with no luck. Searching the internet I found what I was looking for. My dad has three of these, and told me that if I get one make sure it is a long one, these work great when using a grill on a fire pit.

Everyone that loves to BBQ should have one of these.

Somebody should really start distributing them to all the BBQ stores including merchantile stores these should be easier to find and purchase.

I love this item, this would receive a higher rating if there was a higher number to choose......

This unit is paper thin the wire isn't even the diameter of a coat hanger.

The thumb screws angle during tightening the construction is so flimsy.

Don't buy this unit!!!

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

The slot that the spit goes through is much wider than my standard-sized spit. The first time I used this basket I screwed the thumbscrews onto the spit. About half way through cooking the basket started slipping off of the spit.

The way to secure the basket to the spit is to push the spit rod to one end of the opening and screw the thumbscrew down beside the spit rod on one end and then tighten the thumbscrew down beside the other side of the spit on the opposite end. It's going to look a little odd because the basket is not centered on the spit rod (it is about 1/2 inch high on one side and an equal amount low on the other) but it will turn better without slipping. You'll still get even cooking because of the rotation of the basket.

The stainless basket is easy to clean and the clamping action makes it easy to rotisserie cook small and unusually shaped items. I use it to cook chicken wings and it works great.

This smoker is a small version of one a friend of mine purchased at Home Depot. I didn't purchase the larger one because it is extremely heavy. This smoker is very light and easy to put together. It does an adequate job of smoking fish and other smaller items. The negative things I have found are: (1) the firebox seems to get very hot on the left side near the air vent but the fire tends to burn slowly or go out on the right side, away from the air vent; (2) the thin construction of the unit makes for uneven temperatures throughout the indirect cooking part of the unit and (3) I have only used the unit five times and the paint is peeling extensively from the firebox container. I would say that the unit is worth the price and is a decent trade-off if you are looking for a lightweight unit. For smoking things like turkeys, however, I would recommend the larger, heavier unit.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I first saw this smoker while camping. The people next to me had one. They raved about it,so I bought one. First thing I had to do was go the Ace hardware and buy a sheet of steel grating to keep the charcoal from falling through the one provided.($20.00)It is working good after that, however to much heat on the fire box side.I'm going to fabricate a piece of sheet metal over it to lower the heat flow.I think I will be in business after that. Like other reviews said the paint burns off after first use. That does'nt bother me. I just want good food. One suggestion is to use more wood than charcoal.(tastier results)I do like it.

Best Deals for Char-Broil American Gourmet

I have used this smoker a few times and have not had any trouble. Considering what I paid for it and its size, I did not expect it to be perfect, or competing in barbecue contests. It is a small, basic, offset firebox smoker, plain and simple. For my purposes it has worked just fine and I have found that with a little care, the paint on mine is not peeling as the other reviewers have noted.

Honest reviews on Char-Broil American Gourmet

First, I did not buy this product from Amazon, but felt compelled to let others know how I felt about this unit.

Like the other reviewer for this product, I find that temperatures are very inconsistent in this smoker. The unit permits a lot of heat loss due to the thin metal construction. There are also many leaks around the doors. To compensate for this problem it is necessary to use a lot of charcoal.

The charcoal grates that were provided allow a lot of charcoal to fall through the spaces. To combat this I stacked the grates in a criss-cross pattern. This puts the fire higher and closer to the opening to the cook chamber. Thus, the result is direct radiant heat between the cook chamber and the firebox. To combat this problem, another peice of sheet metal needs to be inserted between the compartments to minimize radiant heat. Otherwise, you need to open the cook chamber to rotate the meet. This causes more heat loss and the whole thing is a vicious cycle.

Finally, I had to check the coals on this unit once an hour at least to ensure that the coals were still burning or had not burned out.

Another reviewer who was reviewing a similar product (the Charbroil Silver Smoker) recommended creating a charcoal basket and I believe that the same would be appropriate for this model as well.

Also, as others noted, you will need to go out and buy yourself a can of black grill spraypaint as this contraption will be losing its paint finish in huge flakes. I took a stiff wire brush to it each time I finished using it and waited until the unit was completely cold before applying spraypaint to the bare surfaces.

The only good aspect of this smoker is that it is lightweight and easy to move.

In hindsight, I learned that I could do much better low, slow smoking for smaller peices of meat and chicken with my 18 1/2 inch weber silver kettle. My next smoker investment will be firebricks and grates so that I can make my own smoker in the backyard.

I bought the Esbit BBQ Box primarily for canoe camping trips with my fiancee. While we haven't taken it out in the canoe yet, I have had the opportunity to cook five meals with it.

I love this grill.

Set up is simple, there's enough space to cook a meal for two (a little creativity helps in arranging everything to fit), cleaning is super easy and it's smaller and lighter than my Cobb Grill.

The packaging is efficient (although my folding legs got a tiny bit bent in shipping: not enough to even worry about straightening), and the added touches of a charcoal bag and spare thumb screw are nice.

I might update this review when I've had a chance to try it with firewood as opposed to charcoal I really like this idea as we can save on the amount of charcoal we pack in.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I have both this larger size and the smaller size which you can see on Esbit's website. Apparently, Esbit has chosen NOT to import the smaller version to the US, so I found one on eBay. The price for the smaller one is virtually the same that I paid for the larger one (which is why the importer told me over the phone that they didn't think it would sell too well in the US), but I'm a gadget guy, so I'm still satisfied. And the smaller one is really small, about 9"x6", barely enough for two burgers, but very portable. It's not a backpacker or minimalist unit though, due to weight. But the stainless steel construction is robust and the grill should last a long time if cared for.

The unit is very cleverly designed, a virtual scaled up copy of the classic Esbit tablet stoves (water boilers, really) that are popular among campers. And the idea translates pretty well ... I've cooked mostly hot dogs and hamburgers on it, and it gets the job done with a small amount of charcoal. One problem though, is that when cooking anything with significant fat content, the fat will drip down into the firebox on to the coals, and this makes the grill smoke like mad. I haven't had any flareups because of this, but the unit bears watching while in use just like any other charcoal grill. If anyone knows how to mitigate the smoke, leave a comment please. Of course, grilling lower fat items is one solution, and this heavy smoking did not occur with good quality hot dogs. But with burgers, you'll be visible for miles!

Cleanup is generally easy; you can help yourself by simply lining the firebox with a layer of aluminum foil before adding and lighting the coals. On the smaller unit, flipping the burgers generally resulted in some fat or juice hitting the sides and running down the outside of the firebox (inside the "wings"). This made cleanup a bit more difficult, and you may have the same problem on the larger unit offered here if you crowd the grill. Tongs are better than a spatula in this case, but cleanup is still not too problematic. The upper part screws on to the lower 'platform' for stability (this prevents the 'wings' from collapsing inward while in use). It is possible to move the unit while lit, but insulated gloves are necessary even when grasping the lower platform and the exercise still has some potential danger so I don't recommend it. If you trip or drop the grill, the coals will likely go all over, never a good thing at the campsite and even worse on your deck.

Some nice touches ... it includes a durable carrying bag and also includes a lined nylon bag that holds enough charcoal for one use. This smaller charcoal bag will fit inside the grill when it is folded, making a nice, self-contained package to bring to a picnic. It also includes some heavy plastic to enclose some individual parts and protect the unit from getting all scratched up while stored or transported. Esbit also gives you an extra thumbscrew (these are used to secure the unit to the platform base). And there is an included "tool" (really a heavy U-shaped and bent wire) that allows you to move the grilling surface higher or lower depending on how close to the coals you want the food.

Lastly, the unit suffers a bit in any significant wind. Better that you can find a sheltered place behind some type of windbreak while using it under these conditions. Nonetheless, since it cooks primarily due to direct heat, it still seems to work, albeit slower.

Overall, a well thought out, durable, portable grill that I would recommend and purchase again.

Best Deals for Esbit Portable Folding Charcoal BBQ Grill with Carrying Bag

I own the tiny Esbit pocket stove and like it for camping and emergency scenarios. This grill is essentially the same concept, but obviously much bigger. I like that concept, but the grill should be made of thicker metal sheets. Yeah, I get that doing so would add to the weight, but at least it won't always feel like it will cut my fingers. Also, be careful when opening/closing the grill.

This is probably the most portable grill that I have come across. It won't be my main grill, and I doubt it was designed to be anyone's main grill.

I am excited, to do a review, on these new Emeril Smoker Bags from Camerons products.

First thing I noticed when opened was the bag is very big and hold a lot of meat, fish, vegies, pork, whatever you want to get some smoke on.

This smoker bag, will work in the oven ,on the grill ,or over coals on a campfire.

The 3 ply makeup of this bag , includes a separate chamber ,with hickory chips, syrup, and sugars ,that mskes the smoke ,that travels, into the other part of the bag where the food is and imparts a moist, smokey, flavor, that takes whatever is in the bags taste, to a new level.

Once you remove the food ,you fold, and toss, the smoker bag, in the garbage ,it's that easy. I highly recommend this bag ,because it is so easy to use ,and you end up with a very flavorful, finished, product.

I hope this review, is informative ,and entertaining ,and will help you make an informed buying decision.

I have been looking for a bigger, better grill for some time. I found this one and liked its features and size. I especially liked the cast iron grills and the charcoal tray that can move up and down. The mechanism that does it is also pretty bulletproof. That will make my controlling the heat to the food much easier. My wife even found reviews at different sites and they were all positive. I put my money down on this and it got sent over. While I was building it I noticed that there was some play in how the parts are put together. I have found this can be a good thing because if something is a little off, all you need is to make a little adjustment and everything will fit. I started building it and found the gauge of the metal to be thinner than I had expected. I have bought grills for ~200 dollars and have gotten the grill made of thicker steel. The grill is slightly bent where the grills are supposed to be. Not enough for me to send it back or for other people to see it but it is still there. The other thing I noticed while I was building it was the paint is easy to scratch. I was building it on my patio so I can find any parts that I had dropped; I am not always the most coordinated. I soon switched to the lawn when I noticed how much I was scratching the paint. I will update after I make my first meal.

I ordered this heavy (33 pounds) little jewel from Amazon a week ago, got it much earlier than expected and tried it out the day I got it. I now have 4 grills: An "oil barrel" type that is perfect for when the family tribe shows up, 2 Weber kettle types in different sizes for weekend entertaining and now the Lodge.

I've had several cast aluminum discount store hibachi's over the years and after the wooden handles fall off, the legs become impossible to tighten and then the "adjustable" supports for the grill crack. I don't see that happening with this hibachi.

Let the grill pre-heat, spray it with PAM and then enjoy the meal. The heat is even, cooking times may be a bit faster than you think, but the dish will be excellent.

HOWEVER! If one is cooking on a wooden deck, as I do, invest in some bricks or concrete pavers to go under the feet. Like all cast iron, this sucker retains heat and you don't want to burn your house down while entertaining guests.

Look for the book "The Honerable Hibachi" by Kathryn Popper. An excellent guide/recipe book.

I wonder if this would be safe to use in a large fireplace in winter months. Any ideas?

I'm thinking about getting another Lodge and then finding a home for the smaller Weber.

Get one and then enjoy your hibachi.

Update Feb 26, 2006:

I've now had the Lodge Hibachi for 4 months and typically use it several times a week. Clean-up is even easier than it was when new. Remember to put a little olive oil or PAM on the grids first and the seasoning improves. In cold, rainy weather, the hibachi fits and cooks nicely in my fireplace (thanks, Ukiechris!), but I crack a window when I do that.

Although quite heavy, it's a great picnic grill and will easily cook chicken, steaks or burgers for 4 people. My Webers must think I don't love them anymore. I do, but the Lodge is perfect for 1-4 people and chicken cooked on the hibachi has a flavor my kettle or barrel grills just can't match.

Besides cooking for that tribal gathering, I'll let you know if I find something the Lodge can't do.

A great little grill! Though I grew up with weber, kettle type grills, and even tried a trash-picked gas grill, I have never used a grill that cooks so consistently well.

I use mine with hardwood charcoal -this gets the temperature hot, fast. As soon as the charcoal is lit up I spread the coals outward, drop the grill on top (on the high side of the legs), and let it warm up for a couple minutes. Once the cast iron is warmed up the heat radiates evenly across the cooking surface. To check the temp, I hold my hand 4 inches over the top of the grill -if I can hold it there for more than a couple seconds, it is not hot enough. Without adding charcoal, I usually have just enough time to do two batches on the grill.

For steak, I leave the meat on for four minutes each side. When I pull it off, it has a nice crispy crust, and a perfect pink inside. When I cook burgers, I leave them on five minutes each side. And, chicken, I'll take a boneless, skinless chicken breast and pound it flat with a fry pan before tossing it onto the grill (this prevents the common problem of dry on the thin end and too pink on the thick end). Four minutes each side, and when the milky juice flows out when pricked with a fork, you know that it is perfect and juicy. I cook fish in a similar fashion. A little flavor tip: Some coarse kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper added to your meat before cooking is usually all you need to have excellent results.

Now, for roasting or smoking, this is not the product for you. Since there is not a lid it would be impossible to cook a whole chicken, for instance. Buy a weber for that. But a weber will never acheive the kind of perfect steaks and burgers that you get from one of these.

We have had our grill for three years now. It has lived outide our home the entire time in all kinds of weather rain, snow, ice, or sun. And I was grilling in all conditions. I have performed absolutely no maintenance -never oiled it, never cleaned the ashes. It seams perfectly happy in this state of useful neglect.

If you want a great charcoal grill, this is what you want.

One of my friends received this as a gift to use for tailgating parties. After a few uses, he decided it took to long to cool off, was to hard to clean and had put it back in the box with the intention of setting it out with the trash! Fortunately before he did, he saw me looking at it on this website and asked if I planned on buying it. I said yes and he said don't because he had one that he was going to throw away. If I didn't mind it being used and a little rusty, I could have his. I took it. It was rusted but I scrubbed it, oiled all the parts, and seasoned it in the oven (it was still cold outside so I couldn't fire it up)!

This little grill came in so handy when we bought another house in the spring and removed the stove to make way for the new one. I cooked on it everyday. What my friend found as a disadvantage, I found as an advantage, it stays hot for a long time!

I grilled everything, half smokes, kabobs, burgers, chicken, veggies, fish, etc. . . and nothing stuck! I also grilled ribs on it. I sliced them into individual ribs, placed them on the grill, and covered them with foil (crimped the foil around the rack with tongs). They turned out really good. I used my little cast iron skillet on top of the rack to scramble eggs, and blacken steaks (lots of coals needed for that).

The grill is very durable and as long as it is properly taken care of will provide many years of grilling pleasure! I really like it because the grill rack can be put in the sink for easy clean up and as long as it's properly seasoned, I don't have to worry about my food sticking to it.

I also have a 22" weber kettle grill that I use when I want to grill a lot of food or large items. If I don't, I set this one inside of it on the grate and use it instead. This is an excellent grill for a small household, and I recommend it over the other hibachi type grills. It's great for camping but keep in mind that since it's cast iron it takes a long time to cool down, so start grillin' early!

Honest reviews on Lodge L410 Pre-Seasoned Sportsman's Charcoal Grill

I love using the Sportman's Grill. It gets hot fast and temperature control is easy with the damper and two-position grate. I keep mine seasoned with pam and keep the water out by covering it with an old cookie sheet while it cools down.

This grill is definitely for hardcore charcoal users. I can see where less experienced grillers might not be able to get good results. If you need a thermometer to cook a steak, this is not your grill. If you cam measure temperature by how long you can hold your bare hand over the coals, this grill is for you.

I only gave it four stars because I don't find it very easy to clean out. All of the loose parts have to be removed (grill, charcoal grate, damper door, and the front door) to get all the ash out. Also, I find the carrying handle is nearly useless. The grill is unbalanced so that if you try to pick it up with all of the aformentioned parts attached, it tips over and all the parts end up on the ground. Be careful.

Pros:

1) Beautiful sear marks and flavour

2) Preseasoned, so it's easy care, just wipe down with an oily paper towel, and remember to cleanup the ash after use.

3) Simple effective no-frills design.

4) Can be used as an outdoor firepit.

5) Sturdily built.

6) The oval shape is much more space-efficient than the round one:

a) for finding somewhere to put it,

b) the cooking surface you can fit 6 burger patties on this, flank steak, a full rack of ribs, good sized slab of salmon...(not all at once!) plus two or three medium potatoes wrapped in foil next to the coals. You can cook for 2-6 pple.

c) in arranging the coals for the right type of heat for what you want to cook.

Cons:

1) No lid -For a lid, I would suggest the Cajun Classic brand cast-iron oval dutchoven flipped upside down.

2) Matching oval-shaped Lodge cast-iron Dutch oven is discontinued (could be used as lid, griddle and dutch oven).

3) It is heavy

4) It is ugly

5) Design too basic? Could be made more user friendly with height-adjust option during cooking. Currently, you have to flip the grill over to change height.

You have to really know your coals. Not very charcoal-phob friendly.

6) Limited use:

a) Cast Iron retains heat and cools slowly, so not very pratical for anything where you might have to move it before it cools.

b) Needs to be baby-ed: water + ash = lye, which will eat away at the cast iron bottom causing rust. So no open grilling in a snowstorm, during unstable weather, or leaving out overnight to cool. You have to go back out when it cools to put it under some sort of cover.

Needful accessories:

1) Oval dutch oven to be flipped upside down and used as a lid.

2) Chimney starter.

3) dutch oven lifter which can we used to lift the grill grate and adjust the height while grate is still hot.

4) alternately a pair of heat resistant gloves.

5) 2 pairs of heat resistant tongs, one for fiddling with the coals/ash and another for cooking with.

6) The nylon cover to help protect it from weather (better than nothing, but a garage or shed is best).

Conclusion:

Love it for its efficient size and shape, great sear marks and flavour. Hate it for when the sky threatens to snow/rain.

Precaution for those who live on the shore:

I live by the shore and have salt water mist roll in overnight. I MUST move it into the shed, as moisture/mist/condensation will collect even under the protective covering. Also, a well oiled and cleaned grate will rust in the salt mist if left out overnight.
