This grill pan works just as advertized, but even with the special cleaning brush, it is hard to clean. I was hoping to just be able to pop it into the dishwasher and get out a shiny clean basket. As an avid charcoal BBQer, I was looking to replace my 20 year old Ball-B-Q which I had painstakingly preserved until the bottom had rusted out, so it was time to check out what the market had to offer. I was used to an adjustable height cooking grill and found that most charcoal grills today do not offer this feature. In my mind it's a necessity for those who grill for two or less, otherwise you waste a lot of charcoal and pollute that much more.

So Char-Griller seemed to have all the feature I wanted, especially the airtight hood which has the advantage of snuffing out the coals when you're done. That makes it possible to reuse the coals a second time. Plus the reviews here for other Char-Griller models were positively glowing, so I ordered one blind without seeing it in person.

The grill was straightforward enough to build, but there was some confusion about whether or not the cast iron grates were treated at the factory in China. It turns out they were, but you still have to prime the entire inside of the grill with cooking oil. It then needs to burned off for something ridiculous like two hours before you use it the first time.

The warming rack warped pretty noticeably after this first burn off, and it is clear from the smoke leaking out of the sides and back that the airtight flanged hood is not quite as advertised.

Instead of raising or lowering the cast iron cooking grates, this model has you lift the coal grate up closer to the food. The handles have notches on them that rest on tabs inside the grill body. Fine in theory, clunky in practice...also the handles are metal and get quite hot...mitts are essential.

Dumping the ashes is another pain...you have to remove the 3-piece cast iron grates and then lift the ash pan out using the same handles that adjust the height. Unfortunately, those handles do not lock onto the ash pan, so it's difficult to maneuver it.

I'm not sure if it's because the manufacturer skimped on the gauge of the metal but the grill body bows inward and the hood outward on the sides which creates a 1/4" gap on each side. That lets in a lot of air which makes controlling the cooking temperature difficult. This unit also has a chimney which for some reason is installed from the inside of the hood. That makes it possible for water to leak into the hood and onto the cast iron grills. You will need a cover if you plan to leave this one outside.

Very disappointed with this one, especially since most reviews for similar models were so positive. I'm not sure how long Char-Griller has been manufacturing offshore, but maybe that has something to do with it. Contacted customer service about these issues but their response was indifferent. And of course, once you've used it...you can't return it.

UPDATE 09/2006: Was able to seal leaks and hood with high heat silicone seal caulking. This is the same stuff they use to make those new silicone ustensils and bakewares. However, surface rust has appeared on the hood after 3 months outside. Paint quality seems to be poor as well. Seriously consider getting the cover.

OK people, here's the deal. No other product on the market cooks as well as a Char-Griller. Get the side box, and you have one of the best smokers on the market, too. These grills do have a few issues and, if you are the type that wants to put a grill together and never touch it again, stick to fancy overpriced stainless propane jobs. If you understand that proper charcoal/wood grilling takes work, this thing is great. I barbecue as a part time job, so I know what I'm talking about here, people. This thing is easy to regulate heat and doesn't take much practice to make the best damn BBQ you ever had. I use one at home, occasionally take it to small catering jobs, and use it to pre-smoke chicken for my popular roadside BBQ.

Here are some complaints I've noticed that I feel I need to address in my own special and eloquent way...

#1, you need to oil it and light yourself a big old fire for a while to protect it and get all the casting oil and what not out of the cast iron grates. It's cast iron, it needs done on any grill. before you use it. (noticed some complaints on other reviews).

#2, The grates have advantages and disadvantages. there's a couple of them that lift in and out with a handy dandy little tool. when you lose the tool, you have to use a fork. It's not hard, but I'd like them to be a little bigger. When they eventually crack and break (it takes years), you can order new ones from Char-Griller or find them at Lowe's. They are cheap.

#3, Rust. These grills rust, eventually. An annual $7.00 ban of heat paint, re-oiling, and baking before it starts cures this problem right quick.

#4, Fire. These things will catch on fire if you put them away greasy. Simple solution don't put it away greasy. If you do, drag it out in the yard, pull the ash pan, scrape all the crap in the bottom, douse it with lighter fluid, leave the lid open, and light it up. let it burn. knock the burnt crap in the yard when the fire goes out, and it's clean. Hit it with degreaser and a hose if you want to, but you will have to re-oil and heat treat it again when you're done.

#5, Stuff comes loose. Pretty simple solution there, tighten up all the bolts every once in a while.

#6, Wheels. This is the only design flaw. Cheapo wheels that don't last long. if you don't move it, put it up on blocks. If you do move it, go get some decent wheels off of a lawnmower, and put them on. New, they're 10 bucks. If you have a broken lawnmower, they are free.

#7, Thermometer. This thing will not take long to break. Learn to build your fire and feel the grill for heat. watch the thermometer the first few times you use it. Become one with the grill like any good BBQ cook is, and you won't need it anymore, anyhow. If you use the smoker a lot, and want to watch it out the window, they are cheap to replace anyhow.

#8, Dumping. It's hot and a little bit dirty. You're cooking with fire, people. there's ash. fire is hot. Deal with it. It's got a lift out tray that catches most of it. If ash and dirt is a problem for you, get a gas grill.

#9, Grease. Yes, it will leave a grease stain on your deck or porch from grease that drips down the back of the lid when you open it. You definitely want to set this grill on something hoseable. Be extra careful with any grill on a composite deck. They stain really easy.

#10, Cheesy wooden shelving. When it eventually broke after a few years, I replaced it with some old cutting boards. Wish I would have done it right out of the box. You could use some 5/4 deck boards or whatever scrap wood you can find. Pretty easy.

If you take care of your Char-Griller, and use it pretty often, you will have it for 10 years. If you let it sit out, and don't take care of it, it will rot out and fall apart pretty quickly. This is not the perfect grill for everyone, but for the true BBQ enthusiast, it's absolutely the best choice out there. Several sizes are out there to fit your needs, and there is even a duo model that's propane on one side and charcoal on the other. I will be putting my current model in the garage soon, using it only for catering, and giving that one a whirl. As die hard as I am, I must say that propane has a place when you work 2 jobs and just want to make a quick dinner (especially if you already smoked it on the other side and froze it). My old gas grill finally died, and I figured I'd write a review on old faithful as I order it's fancy new replacement. For the record, though, My current charcoal Char-Griller, though slightly modified and upgraded over the years as previously mentioned, is 10 years old, heavily used, abused, and still in great shape thanks to proper maintenance.

This is a very nice grill but there's not much of a reason to buy it when the Super Pro is only $10.00 more. I bought it based on the advertised size of 640 sq in grilling area which is mis-leading. This is the size of grill PLUS warming rack. the main grilling area is only 435 sq in.

But if you REALLY want a smallish grill (in fairness its not THAT small, the main grilling area is slightly larger than a Weber 22 1/2" Kettle grill) its perfect. Features are great, contruction is heavy duty, and the cast iron grills are the best.

I am very happy with this grill. I looked at both the Patio Pro Model and the Super Pro model as well. I chose this one based on it's size, and that I wanted to be able to easily cook for myself or for a group of friends.

The grill arrived with a few dents in the body. I contacted Char-Griller and they shipped replacement parts to me immediately they arrived within two days.

The set-up was fairly easy. The instructions recommend 2 people, but I was able to set it up by myself.

I seasoned the grill, and I have grilled 3 4 times on it now. Every time I learn a little bit more about grilling, and controlling the temperature on a charcoal grill.

Overall, I think this was a great decision for me. Sure, you can spend $10 more and get the Super Pro but that is just more grill to heat.

Alpha is Chinese made household gas burner. In China, people used this burner for mainly everyday cooking. It does not comply with US standard. Specially, the gas hose and its connector does NOT fit our standard US gas regulator and LP tank. No way you can use it with your LP tank unless you break your own safety. Don't be fooled and mislead by the pictures. The gas hose included with the burner is USELESS. HABOR FREIGHT store and online is selling gas burners for about $40 meet our standard and regulator.

No problems with the seller. Product was shipped as promised. The stove is an unknown brand. I am uploading the actual image. I couldn't use the hose provided to connect to my propane tank that I use for my gas grill. I ended up using another set of connections. The stove is very delicate. It easily get bent. The whole built was poor. May be better off buying some other stove.

The stove works pretty good. The starter often has to be clicked several times to get the flame going. It has a good strong flame but weak frame. The packing wasn't good enough to avoid it being dented in one rear corner, which I more or less pounded-out. If the stainless steel siding were any thinner you'd have to call it a "foil", as in tin foil, or in this case stainless steel foil. It heats up the counter-top so much that the made the formica bubble up off the wood base. But over-all, it works and didn't cost an arm & a leg. Looks pretty good too. Oh, I had to take out ALL of the screws and put in larger ones that could be tightened-down. All the little ones that came with the stove would strip-out if you tried to get any tightness at all on them.

This item was advertised as fitting my grill and picture looked the same as my old burners, but actual product was shorter in length. Should have measured my old burners before ordering. In addition, hole pattern is different than old burners and does not seem to provide as high a flame although grill gets up to temp OK. Had to drill additional holes in burners and adjust igniters to get burners to light (due to being shorter), then they just light by igniters. After a 5-6 seconds rest of burner comes on. Bottom line, they work so guess they are OK but will pay more attention to measurements next time. Seem to be well made.

I bought this for one basic reason I smoke my own turkeys/hams/jerky/cheese etc.etc. Really bought it for the bigger and more delicate projects like the turkey and hams. Takes a little reading and a couple times walking through the setup process, but once you have the functions down it quickly becomes that long lost smoking partner you never new you were missing.

I have always been pretty good about my smoked results but this takes the poke and re-poke temperature checks out of the equation. Especially the rare "its finally done" to cut it open and find out not quite. I hated opening the smoker to find out it is 8 degrees shy of done then close it up and calculate the heat lost just added 20 minutes to get it back to temp and cooking and another 35 minutes to finish on top of the re-poke oozing more of my precious juices while I wait. First turkey I did never opened the smoker just changed the pan until she sang true. By far the easiest way to achieve the desired temp faster without heat loss and a guarantee of perfect done and juiciest quality. One hole from the temp thermometer that stays plugged without removal doesn't allow juices to seep out like the re-poke method. When you cut 'er open and watch the juices flood in around the knife blade you have achieve a delicacy of nummy-nummers!!!!

The temp alarm is not LOUD on the remote unit but its handy being wireless and I keep it sitting within 10 feet of me or in my shirt breast pocket and haven't missed it singing sweetly to me yet. Even on an end-table watching a movie it is obvious when she sings about your meat.

No complaints about the remote range either I usually smoke in the carport about an average of 70 feet away through about 4 walls in the house and don't loose my signal. (Lost the signal a couple times while smoking turkey at a friends house and playing hide-n-seek with the kids in the full basement 80 feet away and through every wall in the house and 6" of concrete but it chirps at you and regains the signal after a moment) The signal is rated in "line of sight" I am sure but nobody expects it to work at those distances in bomb shelter walls or war bunkers do they? I lose my cell signal more often than this.

I have since found other uses for it including the more common use of BBQing which I typically only use the single unit and probe for. I do a homemade mix for a marinade on pork loin and wrap it up good and tight in tinfoil jam the temp probe through the tinfoil and it works like a charm hate overcooked dry meat and what is the point?? Juicy is tender and doesn't lose all the flavors or need to be drowned out with sauce and beer to get it down your throat. The only thing that should be slightly burned or crispied on the edges is hot-dogs and bacon and you don't need a fancy thermometer for either one of those (if you do you need more than this handy gadget to get you through a life of cooking).

The battery life no complaints I have used it over the last couple months about 8 times maybe 16hrs? thus far and only replaced the cheap included batteries. I replaced them before smoking at the friends house. I know I got a good 8 hours out of the first set guessing they will last 10 12 ?? maybe more. Still on the second set of batteries and plan to run it dead for a better idea but even every 10 hours for a couple batteries it's worth it.

Overall extremely happy and it has paid for itself in the first couple smoking projects. Easy to read digital screen easy to wipe clean I use warm water and a sponge to wipe the probes clean rubbing alcohol and a paper towel before storage and alcohol again before use.

In rainy conditions I don't tempt fate I put the outside/sending unit standing up normal after putting a Ziploc sandwich baggie upside down over it. Its clear to read through and gives my new smoker buddy a personal safety bubble..... Better safe than sorry.

This is the second Maverick I purchased. My first one is white. I use it all year round and conditions in winter in Hamburg (Germany) can be quite rough. But this thermometer has always helped me to make good food.

What does this thermometer:

Measuring the core temperature of the food

Measures the BBQ temp. The gauge is mounted with a holder to the grate

Measures the BBQ time.

Gives alarms for set food core temp.

Gives alarms for set BBQ temp.

Measures in F and C (selectable)

Provides background light of the display on the receiver unit (press button and it stays on some seconds)

Gives alarm in case of lost wireless connection (recovers automatically very reliable!)

The wires of the gauges are long enough having food inside the Weber Water smoker running the cable(s) through the door and having the sender on the nearby table. In case one gauge is damaged, a replacement can be purchased for a reasonable price.

But there is a disadvantage apart from all great working features: The measurement gauges must nut be cleaned in water. In case the gauge(s) are dropped in water let them dry in an oven and they recover.

You can use the thermometer also with one gauge connected only.

Mesurement distance: We use it on our yard with a distance of about 80 m (140 feet) over many hours during smoking sesscions. No problems even with a thick glass between.

I've been really getting into barbecuing with my Traeger, and needed a good meat thermometer. There are so many of them out there, I was having trouble deciding which one I needed. I definitely chose wisely. This one is a little more expensive than some of the others, but worth every penny. I love that it has two temperature probes one for the meat temperature, one for the bbq temperature. You can also program it to sound an alarm once the meat reaches the desired temp, or if the grill temp drops. This thing was a lifesaver when I had to do a brisket for 14 hours in the pouring rain. Now, if they can just get it to apply the mop sauce every hour for me....

I tried my new grill brushes out last weekend and was really happy with them. I had occasion to use them on a friend's grill before I even used them on my own. My friend's grill looked like a tough task; he was busy with other prep work so I decided to do him a favor and inaugurate my zbi long brush. Really pleased with how well the baked-on bits came off. The two lengths of brushes seem to complement each other really well. Usually I hate trying to get at the tight places, but the short brush did a good job. I purchased these grill brushes a month or so back and have to say these are the best grill brushes I've ever owned. I own a Weber Kettle as our family really enjoys the full BBQ flavor to our meats. The process was simple, I started my fire and got a bowl of water to clean the grill. I went outside, placed the grill across the heat, waited a couple of minutes and dipped the 21" brush in the water and started moving the brush back and forth. The caked on grease and dry meat particles fell right off the grill. It took very little effort in a back and forth motion to completely clean my grill.

After the grill was clean, I dipped the brush back in the water, responded back into my house and washed the brush while it was still hot with a mild soapy detergent and the brush was clean with hardly no work at all. I have to admit, this was one of the simplest grill cleanings I've ever experience in all my years of BBQing. With the long handle, my hand didn't even get hot. Usually the fire in the Weber Kettle is really hot and singes the hairs on my arm. Never again, as this brush kept my arm safely away from the heat, saving my arm from the usual burning while cleaning the grill or getting some of my wives oven mitts to cover my hands.

Once I finished the cleaning of the grill, I cooked our dinner and man did it taste good. I never noticed how dirty the grill stayed before I used these grill brushes. I noticed when using them that it cleaned all those hard to reach spots on the grill very easily. I guess that had something to do with the way the meat just tasted better after getting the grill thoroughly clean.

You also receive a shorter handy 12" brush you could use to clean the ends of a grill, a hibachi type grill or just about any other type of quick grill cleanups you can think of. This was a real bonus to the order. Most grill brushes cost more than this neat pair did and offer way less quality than these brushes. The brushes I received are stainless steel and have a thick hard handle and nice straps to hang the brushes when they are not in use.

The Flexiflame is an inexpensive, serviceable lighter. It's a shade over 11 inches long and is made of plastic and metal. Mostly I use this lighter to start fires in the fireplace, but it can also be used to light candles or charcoal in charcoal grills.

The neck of this lighter is indeed flexible easy to position and holds its shape.

Be aware that the lighter is child resistant, not childproof. It takes more than a little effort to squeeze the igniting trigger, making it child resistant.

The flame can be adjusted to some degree using a little switch.

One can refill this lighter using lighter fluid, but I haven't had the need to do so yet.

The flame will stay lit in a gently breeze, but when it's windy out the flame may die prematurely.

I also have a Scripto wind resistant flexible. It's much better in the wind, but I like the gentle flame of the Flexiflame better. Also those requiring an extra long lighter may want to look at other models available.

The Flexiflame lighter is made in China.
