These are not made from hickory wood, they are hickory "flavored" pellets. This is bordering on false advertising, but nowhere on the bag does it say its actually hickory wood, just "100% hardwood", so they can get away with it.

It's not that hard to build your own smoker, but you'd probably wind up spending about just as much money on the parts you'd need as you would if you just buy the Little Chief. I've had mine for about 10 years and have been very happy with it. This smoker is a true work horse.

A few tips: the recipe booklet that comes with this smoker is okay, but the brine recipe is WAY too salty for beef jerky (and even smoked fish). My recommendation is to buy 1-2 pounds beef tip (don't get any more than that with this particular smoker as you won't be able to fit more than 2 pounds on the grates--if you need to make bigger batches, either build a smokehouse or buy the Big Chief). Slice the meat thinly and brine it overnight in:

1qt cold water

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup kosher or sea salt

2 tsps garlic power

2 tsps coarse ground black pepper

In the morning, drain the brine, assemble the jerky on the grates, and briefly pat dry them. Do three rounds of wood smoke throughout the day (an alder/hickory combo is nice), leaving the rest of the time to just heat and air dry. You'll be really surprised by how flavorful this simple recipe is. All the recipes that call for loads of other ingredients (e.g., wine, soy sauce, etc.) don't add anything and are a waste of money.

I've had my smoker for over 10 years and it has traveled with me throughout that time while I've been in the military. It has worked exceptionally well everywhere I've used it whether in Oregon, Japan, or Okinawa. Frieds rave about the smoked salmon. The construction of this smoker has held up very well and the fact that it is all aluminum has prevented it from rusting away, unlike the three barbeque grills I've had to throw away in the same period.

This is a great little smoker for jerky or meats such as chicken and pork. Don't think you'll be able to smoke a tri-tip or whole chicken unless you set aside a lot time for smoking. It has trouble keeping proper heat so make sure you keep it out of the wind. My solution was simple for the heat loss. I bought a metal trash can and a couple of bricks. I arranged the bricks around the unit then placed the trash can over the unit and it kept the smoker at a consistent temperature for smoking. A word of caution when making jerky. Don't take any to work unless you want your friends harassing you for more, more, more! No lie! :)

I purchased this grill originally to use away from home, but ended up pulling it out this evening and using it on my back porch. I decided to video the grilling since I was curious how well it was going to work and in the end am so impressed with this purchase that I have to post the video along with my review. It was 40 degrees and windy today, only 2 days after Hurricane Sandy blew through PA and I was concerned that the grill would not generate enough heat to cook my ham steaks and sausages. However, this little charcoal grill performed above my expectations and is more than worth the price it cost. The briquettes ignited quickly and took 30 minutes to burn down to create a hot coal bed, which is reasonable time for charcoal grilling. The charcoal did smoke for 15 minutes during the initial burning, but this is typical of charcoal and the package even stated that the grill will smoke for about 15 minutes, so this was no surprise. Once the coals were hot and ready, I grilled 2, 6 oz. ham steaks and 4 pineapple rings and then flipped the ham and added 4 Italian sausages. I did put a foil shield around the back side of the grill since it was so windy, a tip that can be used with any type of grill. Everything I grilled was completely cooked in 45 minutes. The flavor of the grilled meat was delicious, the meat was moist, and my craving was satisfied! The clean-up could not have been easier. This is the perfect solution to portable grilling or having a charcoal grill on hand if you don't have storage space for a full-size grill and bags of charcoal. I will definitely purchase more of these disposable charcoal grills in the future and recommend them to friends and family!!!

This thing smoked like CRAZY for the first half an hour, and the smell was horrid. When I say smoked like crazy I mean you couldn't see through the smoke and I'm sure everybody on the block was wondering what in the heck the nasty smelling smoke was from. I can't believe I was foolish enough to put my food on it after the smoked dissipated... of course it made my food taste just like the awful smell. I can't even begin to describe the smell and taste; one thing is for sure: it wasn't real charcoal and didn't even have the slightest hint of real charcoal flavor. I ended up throwing my food in the trash and having to change my clothes and wash up just to rid myself of that putred smell. I don't know how in the world the other reviewers could even stomach it... it really makes me question their legitimacy on the review of this product. Seriously, they all have the same tailgate story to tell (and their writing styles are identical)... sounds fishy. Especially since if I would have tailgated with this thing somebody would have came and beat me up.

From a grill master: STAY AWAY FROM THESE! -Unless of course you like the taste of Larry The Cable Guys underwear (that's my best guess as to what they use for the "charcoal")

Big box of wood chunks. Seems simple, right? The thing is, when you buy wood chunks what you normally get from, say, Weber, is a bunch of chunks of wood of varying size. Opening this box I was surprised to note that these chunks were almost uniform in size & shape, ultimately making it much easier to control the amount of smoke.

Review of Broil King Model 900654 Porta-Chef PRO Liquid Propane 14,000 BTU

I loved this grill till the 4th time I used it. At this point the plastic mounting brackets melted due to the heat the grill gave off during usage. At this point the two back plastic brackets melted and the grill fell into the base at approximately a 30 degree angle making everything roll onto the back of the grill. You also could not use it this way as with the angle it was on the gas stopped flowing and there was no heat to cook the meat. The idea of the grill is great, I loved the size and portability, but the plastic braces were a major design flaw. After only 4 uses the grill was rendered unusable. I would not recommend this grill to anyone. Amazon was really great about the return when I emailed them with the problem. They promptly sent me a return postage coupon and refunded my money promptly upon receipt of the defective item. Thank you Amazon.

We have owned 2 Porta Chefs. Some of the parts on our last unit were going to need replacement so we decided to look into the new Pro model. We became concerned when we read the review that the brackets had melted necessitating a return to Amazon. We called Amazon and they were not much help. The customer rep said that there was a 50% chance we would be OK because the other review had no problems. Did not do anything to build our confidence!

We then called Broil King and they discounted the problem but said we should call them with the serial # of the unit and send us updated parts if necessary. We did call them after the unit arrived and they said that our grill should have no problem.

We are still getting used to the Pro. It seems to take longer to get hot but everything we have cooked has come out great. The side shelves are really handy. The cooking compartment is higher but the rest of the grilling area is about the same size as the older model. It is sturdier and heavier and is larger in it's stored position. The grill is closer to the grate and we are unable to use the chip smoker under the grill as we did with previous model.

Amazon says this is a 16,000 Btu model. This is incorrect. Broil Kings website and their rep said it was less. It is either 12 or 14,000 btu. You can look it up, same as older model.

Bottom line is that the older unit is no longer available. Some nice new things and some old things we miss.

This is an excellent product. This is the third Porta-Chef I've owned in the past 10 years. I keep one in my motorhome for camping. We now use the newest model as our preferred grill for home use as well. The new model really improved on the older model. Very easy to set up and very easy to stow away. Very compact once all the parts are snapped into place for transporting in your car, RV or any other conveyance.

We especially like the two tiered cooking racks. The upper rack is great for chicken or fish when you want to cook at lower intensity heat.

I recently ordered replacement parts for my old Porta-Chef from the Broil King web site and toll free line. Very easy and very reasonable prices for replacement burner and heat shield. They also sent me replacement screws that I needed for free.

This grill works great when it's set up...breaking down and mobility is a different story though...thus only four stars instead of five. It can be difficult to remove the legs sometimes but mostly it's not that big of a deal. When disassembled the legs and side pieces are supposed to be stowed nicely away underneath the unit...but this is not the case...they will stay there for a while if your careful...but to many times they have just fallen out all over the place...great idea just not engineered very well...Its size does take up a lot of room but I prefer the large size when camping when cooking for a group of 6 to 10. Very nice unit overall.

I have used this on several cooks now and am used to ithere is my take on this very decent product, used on large Green Egg.

It will definitely get you at the temperature you wish to be at +/15 to 20 degrees according to my maverick probes.

it allows me to cook a brisket overnite without worrying about setting the alarm every two hours to check my fire, i know this can hold the temp where i want more or less until it burns out of wood, which can be 20 hours at 250+ with the firebox full.

very simple to set up, just need an electrical cord to power it. I used my Maverick 72 probes to verify the temps at both the grill surface and the daisy wheel, the grill temp is very close to the setting on the surface of the control box.

My Egg must be quite efficient, i have to shut the baffle to a lower level to restrict airflow or she'll get over temp'd and there is no way to cool with this, just to get the temp. This is a lower cost alternative to what is out there and doesn't have near the bells and whistles as the higher priced alternatives, but that is why i never owned those others! this does what I need it to do and if you own an BGE or any kamodo-style cooker this will fit the bill!

I unhesitatingly recommend this at this early stage of ownership, if this keeps up and gives me a few years or better I will be very happy.

One word of advicePATIENCE! this doesn't respond instantly, it takes a few minutes at times to speed up the fan so don't sweat it, it will get there for you and keep you there if you have it adjusted properly and that is easy s soon as you "learn" your cooker's efficiency. This and a good quality temp probe and you will have great success with your cooksTemp Control is what it is all about as you smoker's know!

I bought this for use with my Broil King Keg and it works great! One tip for the BKK is to set it 50F below your target temp when starting out. The BKK is so efficient that the IQ110 tends to overshoot a bit at first, but once it's warmed up the IQ110 nails the temp. It held 225F perfectly for a 20 hr pork butt cook, and the butt turned out great!

My wife and I enjoy baked potatoes and usually have them once a week, and I am fussy about how they are done. I don't like an underdone (hard) potatoe. I have tried meat thermometers, and an exspensive talking digital thermometer but the probe is too long. The short little Man Law thermometer works just perfect. I have a large grill that has been discontinued. The original custom cover ripped a few years after I purchased. I've tried three different covers the last 5 years. None have lasted. I don't know how long this will last but so far it seems to be of the highest quality. It fit my grill which is 69" wide. It has air vents along the back to prevent mold. Its supple but tough. Very happy with my choice.

I haven't had this for very long, but the material seems much better quality than some other covers I have had. My grill is a 65" wide Kenmore model with the fold down sides. I tried another cover that stated it was for a 65" grill, and it was way too tight. This cover fits perfectly. Not too snug, not too loose.

The handles make off/on easier. The generic fit is little short for my grill, but that's better than it touching the ground.

Don't know why the vent strip is placed so near the bottom.
