This review has nothing to do with any restaurant appetizers, the title for this review just rhymes nicely does it not?

Some background. So I bought a crappy grill from Home Depot about 5 years ago. It looked nice, stainless steel, bla bla bla. But it never was a very good grill. Within two years everything started to rust and fail. So rather than go and buy a new Weber (or other quality product), I've been rebuilding a frankstein grill with superior parts that fit my particular grilling purposes. All the rusted out burners have been replaced with cast iron or ceramic burners which now distribute heat more evenly, and I've been experimenting with different grids (porcelain, stainless steel, cast iron, and these GrillGrates). I have different grids for different kinds of food different kinds of veggies, indirect bake, bbq "smokes", etc.

OK about the GrillGrates. For searing on the grill, I traditionally looked to seasoned cast iron. But lately I find myself using the GrillGrates exclusively for searing and grilling. They are made out of hardened aluminum. This means they are practically non-stick (i usually rub some vegetable oil on the grilling surface before putting food on), easy to clean, and they heat up quickly. You will get great sear marks and even heat over the entire cooking surface. I haven't noticed any dramatic hot spots and there are very few flare ups. Because aluminum conducts heat very efficiently, you can maintain a high temperature surface with low flame, and you can cook on practically the whole thing and get very consistent results.

I got GrillGrates that cover the entire grill so there seems to be less heat convection. Thicker cuts will take a bit longer to cook but the results are fantastic. Well worth the investment.

My only concern is leaching aluminum. My understanding is that hardened aluminum will not leach into food. I try not to use wire brushes as not to scratch the aluminium surface. Anyone out there know more about that? Please share! Thanks!

this is our second phoenix grill purchase. my husband is the griller in the house and after our last purchase of the phoenix grill(about 10 years ago), he refused to purchase another grill until i found another phoenix. our first one was purchased at a rural king which quit carrying this product. our grill is used a minimum of weekly and freq several times a week. he will even grill in the winter so this is a must have item. a little pricier but worth every penny.

I recently got a Char-Griller Duo #5050 with side firebox for a Father's day gift and was looking for an appropriate cover. Char-Griller has one specifically for this model (including slots for the smoke vents) but from the reviews it didn't seem to be of good quality. Given the overall size of the grill, there weren't many other options so I tried this one instead. So far it has held up very well and fits perfectly both over the main grills -andthe firebox. It certainly has a 'heavy' feel to it and while I have had it only a few months now, it seems as though it will hold up well agains the elements (though I will reserve judgement until it goes through it's first Michigan winter!). Overall, I mostly just wanted to post this in case other #5050 owners were unsure (like me) whether it would fit well or not: it does!

I have an 80" grill and large covers are sometimes hard to find. A little over 3 yrs ago I purchase a cover from the cover store. It had a 3 yr warranty and cost over twice as much as this cover. In 3 yrs and 3 months it was torn in several places but the warranty had expired. I looked for something different that was a heavier material. This cover is it. It is much heavier than my previous cover and the cost is a great value. I highly recommend it.

The grill cover seems to be made of quality, durable material and it fits over the grill nicely. But after 3 days of exposure to direct sunlight in summer days in the upper 90's the undercoating stuck to the grill and peeled off of the cover everywhere it made contact with the grill when I uncovered the grill. It seems that the black cover gets so hot in direct sunlight that it causes the undercoating to get sticky enough to adhear itself to the grill.

I like the cover but now I know that perhaps placing a bed sheet or light blanket over the grill before covering it may prevent the undercoating from sticking to the grill.

I recently installed the natural gas conversion kit on my Camp Chef triple burner stove. As others have said, it was a difficult installation, and after it was complete, the flame was only about half the size of original. After emailing back and forth with customer service, they mentioned that "When you hook up to natural gas you lose about a third of the btu output on the stove. Natural gas dosen't have the pressure or the heat of propane. You can drill out the oriface in each valve to .082 inches or a #45 drill bit to get the heat back up. Once you do that you can not use it with propane again." That's a direct quote (copy and paste) from their email, misspelling and all. And when I asked if they sell replacement orifices, they offered a whole valve assembly.

Long story short, don't waste your money unless you are comfortable purchasing new valve assemblies.

We recently moved to a new location and had the option of having a gas line installed on our deck. We thought it would easy to convert our gas grill to this line and looked forward to using the grill without having to constantly fill the tank. Even though we HAD to have this kit, it was not easy to install. Many stops at plumbing stores, Home Depots, Lowes, etc. before we were finally able to connect the kit to the gas line. It works and we love it, but it was not easy to install.

I recently took delivery of a Weber NG (natural gas) Spirit, which came with a hose that looks remarkably like this one. I had the gas line extended to our deck and when I got the Weber, I found that I needed a reducing fitting that reduced the pipe diameter at the gas line to fit the hose fitting. I took the hose and the cover cap from the gas line (the line has a cut-off valve at the stub) to the local Ace hardware and a young fellow helped find the proper fitting (from 3/4" to 3/8". I also needed to add a very short piece of pipe (called a nipple) and an ell to complete the assembly. Took all this stuff home and within the hour we were grilling a steak, which turned out just right.

I'm in the market for a second hose to convert a smoker from charcoal to NG and I'll probably buy the one shown above.

This is how I cook most of my food when I camp, and it can handle anything from burgers, to steak, to chicken, to Spam, to hotdogs, to whatever.

When it wears out, toss it and get another one.

Wish it was easier to clean, but usually a good soak and scouring with wadded tinfoil takes care of it.

Works great, much more compact than carrying a whole grill.

these were packaged in a small box inside of a large box. I was not aware that the small box had one end open, when I picked it up out of the larger box one of the burners slid right out and broke. Not happy at all with how the packaging was done.

I bought these for my Bull Angus BBQ. Bull sells (stainless steel) burners for around $60 a piece. I was very happy to find this (cast iron) 4 pack for the same price as just one "official" replacement. The short story is that the burner fits into my grill ok, but there are some caveats:

1) The rectangular portion of the tube, where the flame comes out, is pretty much the same size as the original ones they are replacing. The base tube, however (where the gas comes in) is about a half inch shorter. Fortunately, this doesn't seem to cause any problems.

2) The base tube is thicker than my originals. They will still fit into the orifices on the grill, but the old shutter clips don't wrap around properly. Since these burners didn't come with shutter clips of their own, I'm not operating without them. Since these clips adjust the air/fuel ratio, and they are supposed to be closed for Natural Gas (NG), this means that I am possibly operating at decreased efficiency. The clips are supposed to be open for Liquid Propane (LP) setups, so this would be less of an issue.

Currently, I have two of these installed in my (4 burner) grill. Since they are replacing burners that were partially incapacitated, I do get more heat then I was getting before.

These burners fit my Jenn-Air (720-062) grill perfectly. I purchased the four-pack. They appear nearly identical to the original burners (which, like these were also made in China). I decided to weigh one, and sure enough they even weigh the same as the originals, so you know they are constructed with the same amount of cast iron. My originals lasted 10 years, heck, if for some reason these were to only last 5, at this low price it doesn't matter. Not when most Jenn-Air replacements are going for $30 EACH.

This beer roaster is amazing. We have a $100 rotisserie that we rarely used because it takes up a lot of counter space and it's too hard to clean. This simple device has replaced that clunky inconvenient machine. Now we're cooking a big chicken dinner every weekend.

The first time we used the Beer Roaster, we tried a bland Miller Genuine Draft beer. The chicken came out moist, but flavorless. After some trial and error, we found a perfect recipe.

We pick a beer with lots of flavor. Our current preference is a dark Sam Adams brew like Black Lager or Brown Ale. We then add in a big spoonful of honey. Make sure you rinse off the chicken and pat it dry inside and out with paper towels. We then apply a dry rub to the outside of the chicken (any good rub you pick-up at the grocery store should be fine). A 6-pound chicken cooks for about 2 hours at 375 degrees. Once it's done cooking, let it sit for about 10 minutes so the juices can settle down.

Everyone raves about the flavor. There's never any leftovers. It's so much better than those lousy pre-cooked chickens at the grocery. The Beer Roaster is the best kitchen gadget we've ever bought.

No more wrestling a hot chicken off of an equally hot beer can! The 18/10 stainless steel construction is sturdy, and the tube is just the right size which makes taking the chicken off a breeze. The beer roaster is a one piece unit with a base that provides ample support for the bird to rest on.

I filled with water after removing the item from the packaging.

I wiped the base dry with a paper towel.

Within one minute, I probably had a Tablespoon of water that had leaked onto the base plate.

I filled out online the form for a replacement and Amazon is ready to send a new one out (no charge) I also printed out a label for return shipping that Amazon created.

I have 30 days for them to receive the defective item before being charged for the second or replacement item.

I will follow up when received on the condition of the second roaster.

I have cooked beer can chicken before and yes it is moist and tasty.

I knew the size of the item, but was still shocked to see the size of it...appeared small. But could be a good thing if you were trying to cook two chickens at the same time.

The diameter of the 'can' is smaller than that of a can of soda...thus it will be easier to insert into the chicken.

Update two days later:

Received the second or replacement item in two days from Amazon.

It worked just fine until I tried to clean it. I placed a dish rag loosely into the can to clean...holding onto the square base and turning on the disk rag, I felt a snap. Part of the bottom of the can separated from the plate. Does NOT leak though. I sent it back also.

It turns out the item is made of three pieces.

The cylinder (can) is made of stainless steel.

The bottom of the can has a steel plug (not stainless...magnetic) connected somehow to the cylinder. I suspect either glued or jammed into the bottom. I DO NOT KNOW. But I see no spot welding marks.

Then the plug is spot welded to the base which also is NOT stainless steel (again magnetic material like steel).

One final note. With the chicken resting on top of the can, the top of the can is near the top of the neck. So I am not sure how much moisture and flavor stays inside the chicken.

I will stick with my Fox Run brand.

I have on order two stainless cups or tumblers that I will see how they work within the Fox Run wire cage.

The provided description is not correct. This burner does not fit Charbroil Cooking Zone 1000. The flame diffuser is too c;ose to the gas entry, and connection holes are missing. It will require work or will be returned.

Used it a few times now. What can I say, it works. I do like that the top of the 'U' doesn't have a flame diffuser (the plate over the pipe) it throws off high-heat there good for searing. Quality seems fine. Time will tell. Kinda bummed it doesn't have the ignitor port but then again the old one quit working years ago so I'll just keep dropping a match in.

I have the model with the long stainless handle and these replacement heads work perfectly. Not easy to find but worth the trouble. I bought three as I grill 2-3 times per week, and have been using this brush for several years and plan to continue as long as I can get the replacement heads like this for it.

A-maze-n Tube Smoker 12" Review

I have tried several different "smoke boxes" that use wet or dry wood chips and just couldn't get the smoke I wanted from them. The A-Maze-N smoker is the best smoke device that I have tried.

First off, I already own the 6" and 18" size "A-maze-n" Tube Smokers. I bought the different sizes so I could use the one that matched the time I needed to complete my smoked dish. Plus, sometimes I use more than one tube smoker at a time for more smoke. For instance, We love smoked BBQ chicken. It takes from 2 1/2 to 3 hours at 240 degrees to cook it until it is done. I was using the 18" tube smoker and about 1/3 rd of the pellets were not burned. When I used the 6" tube, I ran out of smoke too soon. The 12" tube is just right for smoking something for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. If you only buy one A-Maze-N Tube Smoker, the 12" would be the best all around size to have.

The A-Maze-N tube smoker is made of stainless steel and should last a very long time. When you complete your smoking and the grill cools off, carefully pick up the tube smoker and pour the ashes into a waste disposal container. Make sure all of the burned pellets are cold. Some of the ash will try to fall out thru the holes, but if you are careful you can empty the tube without making a mess. I usually use an aluminum tray and put the smoker tube directly on it from the grill. That way if ash falls out of the holes, it will fall onto the tray and not onto the grill.

I like this a lot. Makes it easy to smoke meats before grilling, smoke cheese, etc. This has a smoldering fire but no flame. The tube gets warm hot near the smolder zone but doesn't heat up the rest of the grill that much.
