The Masterbuilt smoker is a wonderful product for the price. Whether you're new to smoking, or an experienced smoker who wants a less hands on, labor intensive smoke, this is simply the best you can get for the $$.

Pros:

1. Digital thermometer: If you've smoked much, you know keeping the smoker at the right temperature is often what takes the most attention. As an electric smoker with a built in thermometer, you can set your preferred temperature and then just focus on keeping the woodtray filled, the contents mopped, and you're good to go. (You will still want to use a digital thermometer on the meats themselves to check their internal temperatures, but that's a different matter.)

2. Well insulated: Unlike a traditional side smoker, bullet or most other form factors, the masterbuilt is nicely chunky and really doesn't care overly what the outside temperature is at (within reason)

3. Capacity: Four racks (though with chickens, big roasts, shoulders and ribs you may only end up using two at a time. Still, I've loaded it up 30+lbs of meat at a time which for a product that often drops under $200 when on sale, is not bad at all.

4. Economy: It runs on electricity and with small amounts of wood relatively speaking. Rather than going through large amounts of wood and charcoal, you have a much more affordable smoke, which if you want to smoke regularly (or smoke small batches) is great.

5. Customer Support: You'll find repeated reviews of this online, but Masterbuilt's customer support is second to none. Its hard to find companies that stand behind their products the way Masterbuilt does. If something is defective, they will fix it with little to no questions asked.

So why don't I give it a 5 stars?

1. Size: Masterbuilt has a 40" version, but it is very hard to find. Really, if they made the 40" the standard, that extra little bit of space would allow you to use all four racks more often even with larger cuts.

2. Temperature Range: The Masterbuilt only goes up to 275. This is excellent for red meats which will often cook between 220 and 250 and fish, but not as good for poultry, where you want it up to 350 to get the fat in the skin to render (and avoid chewy skin).

3. Power: The Masterbuilt's electric heater sometimes doesn't seem to have quite enough oomph if you really load it with meat. I've had a hard time keeping the temp up when its full. There are people online who add their own heating elements to help boost it.

4. Needs direct plug: Masterbuilt requires you plug directly into an outlet. So, given the relatively short electrical cable that means you need to install an outdoors outlet if you believe them. I did use it fine with an industrial extension cord, but talking to their customer support, they felt it might be a reason for problem #3 above.

So, what do you have? A great form factor for a smoker, with good capacity, that maintains a set temperature, with multiple racks for different products, and that gives a consistently result. On the other hand, they have a slightly larger product that is only distributed much more limitedly, and they have odd limitations on the product based on max temp and wattage to the heating element. Given the price difference between the Masterbuilt and its nearest competitors, perhaps these limitations are forgivable. I still regularly recommend it to friends, and have many, including some who run a couple of well respected restaurants loving the products that come out.

Things I'd love to see from Masterbuilt as aftermarket products or even just upgrades:

1. External smoke box that attaches to the wood feed hole, so that you can do cold smokes for sausages, cheeses and salmon and other products.

2. A higher wattage heating element that can be swapped out for the standard one.

3. A higher max temperature so I don't need to take the chickens and game hens out 30 minutes before done and toss them in the oven to crisp the skins.

Regardless, to come full circle. If you want to dabble in smoking and are intimidated (which is easy), this is a perfect smoker to make things easy. And if you are experienced in smoking and just want to have either a more affordable smoke so you can do it more often, or a less labor intensive one, once in a while, this is the perfect supplement to your existing set up.

A friend of mine has a Masterbuilt smoker that looks very similar to this one and it works very well. His experience, along with everything I've read is very positive for all Masterbuilt smokers, with the notable exception of heating element replacement. Given that, my decision on which model to purchase will be based on whether the heating element can be replaced without replacing a large segment of the smoker.

From my research it seems the heating element is the one part that's most likely to fail, so you'd expect them to be replaceable. After reading in these Amazon reviews that the heating element of this model may not be replaceable, I swapped e-mail with a Masterbuilt rep and here's what I found.

The rep claimed the heating element can be replaced on all of their smokers, although some require a new body assembly and replacement parts are no longer made or stocked for some of their older models. All of the electric smokers sold on their website allow for replacement of just the heating element. The heating element of this model (#20070106) requires a new body. (sixty bucks plus s&h)

The rep made it clear that model #20070910 is their newest 'standard' 30" electric smoker, and it does allow for easy replacement of just the heating element. It's hard to find on their website, so just search the web for the model #.

The rep also told me there's no way to know when a particular smoker, and thus replacement parts, will be phased out. She said some of their models have been sold for over five years, implying that's a long time.

The following models were mentioned in our correspondence.

30" Electric Smokers

====================

> Model #20070106; sold here on Amazon.

For heating element replacement, you must replace the entire body and the customer can do this. The cost for the new body is $60.00 plus shipping and handling.

> Model #20070110; smoker with window and meat probe

The heating element alone can be replaced by the customer.

> Model #20070910; standard 30" edition

The heating element alone can be replaced by the customer.

40" Electric Smokers

====================

> Model #20070710; smoker with window and meat probe

The heating element alone can be replaced by the customer.

The rep I corresponded with was very helpful, and I still plan on purchasing a Masterbuilt smoker just not this one.

Hello Folks,

This used to be a five star review for Masterbuilt with me raving about the awesome customer service I received from them.

I hate to do this but times have changed and so has the service. I have read numerous accounts here and on a smoking forum I frequent of smoker owners with bad units being ignored. This is an awesome unit when it works but the weak link is the heating element and when it goes bad there is no replacement offered. This fault has been problematic since the first models and as far as I can tell not addressed. I'm guessing there are too many bad units in the field to repair now and the company is providing no solution or repair.

Before you buy check the warranty to see what the company will do for you should the element go bad. Maybe Masterbuilt will get back to taking care of the customer, I certainly hope so but seems now they have joined the majority of producers who only have eyes for the bank once the money is in their hands. Pity.

Honest reviews on Masterbuilt 20070910 30-Inch Electric Smokehouse Smoker, Black

After reading several complaints about the heating elements failing in these units and the inability to replace these elements, I was very leery about buying one.

But I finally jumped in and made the purchase and could not be happier. First off, the Model number listed in the amazon listing, #20070106, is not the unit you receive. You actually receive Model 20070110. The newer model you can swap out the heating element if it fails. A huge plus.

I have had this unit for 4 weeks now and have made briskets, pork shoulder, and ribs. The unit is super simple to operate. Turn it on, set the time and temp, and add a small amount of wood chips every hour or two.

The smoker is well insulated. On a 40 degree day, it heated up to 275 degrees in about 40 minutes. I added my meat, lowered the temp to 225 degrees, and it easily maintained a temperature range of 215 to 225 for the entire 12 hour cooking period. On a 60 degree day, it preheated to 275 in about 20 minutes and again easily maintained temp even though it was very windy out. It also recovers quickly when you open the door to check on your food. The built in electronic thermometer is a nice touch. Shows you what the current smoker temp is. You can also run a remote temp probe through the vent in the top of the unit to monitor your meats internal temperature as it cooks.

The smoker puts out a moderate amount of smoke with a very small amount of wood chips. And it uses wood chips, no expensive wood disks. I choose to clean out the chip tray every 3 hours or so just to keep them from piling up in it. The smoker does a great job of hanging onto smoke too. You son't get a smoke ring, mainly because there is not enough carbon monoxide generated from the chips to pink up the outer layer of meat. Only wood and charcoal smokers will get you that. But the smoke ring offers no more flavor, just a smoke ring.

So far all the food I have made in this smoker has come out fantastic. Nice smoky flavor with very little work. You basically set it and add wood chips every now and then. The water pan keeps things nice and moist and the heating element keeps a nice even heat. Clean up is not too bad if you prep a bit first. Place foil in the water pan and in the drip pan. This will allow you to just take the foil off and give it a quick wash with soap and water. The racks do require a bit of scrubbing, nut that is to be expected. Just don't foil your racks. The interior is just wiped out with clean water, no soap.

So if you live in a colder climate, and are looking for an electric smoker, I would not hesitate to purchase this unit.

I bought this smoker in April. Out of the 4-5 times I have used, I have gotten no smoke. My chips do not burn. I called Masterbuilt customer service twice. The first time, they told me to soak my chips only 15 minutes prior to cooking. Today after a roast cooking for 5 hours at 220 degerees with no smoke, they told me to not soak them at all. Seems to be a bigger problem with the element. My chips get dark but do not smolder. Masterbuild will do NOTHING about it. I am perplexed by the positive reviews and would assume I got a lemon! Out the smoker and about $50.00 worth of meat. Thanks Masterbuilt!

This product is available with a motor -either AC or battery powered -or with no motor. I bought the one without. It's not hard to assemble, but it is hard to set up and adapt to a grill that already has a motor and bracket (I have a Kenmore#. You have to think a little out of the box. In my case, I had to turn my motor upside down. The Grill Dog comes with two adapter rods #long and short# that allow you to connect it to a motor. The long rod worked in my case. The rod has a square end that fits into the drive on a motor and a proprietary-shaped end that fits into either end of any of the rollers that aren't blocked by one of the four adjustable legs. Each leg has a foot that rests on the grilling surface and the body can be moved up and down to line up with the motor. Each leg can be adjusted by loosening a wing nut. In my case, I had to lower the body so far that the legs blocked the ends of some of the rollers. Once I got it set up, the Grill Dog worked pretty well. The only problem I had in actual use was that it would sometimes walk, separating itself from the adapter rod and causing my dogs to burn on one side. There should be a firmer connection between the adapter rod and the Grill Dog. The big problem -the reason I gave it only two stars -is that it's not made entirely from stainless steel #or it's a very poor grade#. After a season the ends of the rollers, the parts that hold the rollers in the body #like the ends of a toilet paper holder), rusted to the point where they wouldn't turn. And I was careful. Even though it's represented as being dishwasher-safe, I always washed it by hand and dried it by putting back on the grill for a few minutes. I like the way it worked and part of me wants to buy a new one, but I don't want to buy a new one every year.

I purchased this grill directly from Hasty Bake in Tulsa, OK. The staff is friendly and available to answer questions. I was skeptical about the grill and the performance, but have been very pleased. The ability to raise and lower the firebox is a great feature and I am making the best steaks. I typically steam veggie and cook a steak every Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine. I have thoroughly enjoyed this grill. The only two complaints I have is the paint peeling on the inside and amount of time it takes for the grill to cool down. After about 5 uses, the paint had peeled from the door and the rear of the firebox area. I already see rust forming where the paint is gone. For the price, I did not plan to scrape and repair the grill so soon after the purchase. Maybe should have gone with the all stainless. Second, when I am done and I close all of the vents and lower the firebox, it takes a while for the coals to burn out. Typically, only ash is left. I was hoping when all of the vents were shut, the fire would go out prior to the coals burning out... preserve the coals for the next use. The upside is, it does not take many coals to maintain a consistent heat for extended periods of time. At least I am not wasting too much. Aside for these two things, I am very happy.

WalMart was out of my standby lump charcoal so I had to buy this as an alternative. It was $.37/lb more and the 8 lb bag had 2-3 lbs of chips and dust which are unusable. There was also so uncarbonized wood in the bag. Better lump options exist. Do not buy this stuff unless you are in a pinch.

I will mention however, that when I contacted Cowboy and told them about the poor quality of the product, they refunded my money very quickly.

I bought this from a local store and at first was impressed. The bigger pieces are (of course) at the top of the bag. However by the time I got to the bottom 1/3 of the bag I was down to chips and dust. Not very effective for cooking. In fact, I had to halt a slow cook in the middle and reload with better lump charcoal as the small pieces of cowboy were just not holding temperature.

You can buy this stuff for $15 to $20 but bear in mind that you'll basically end up tossing 5-7 lbs because it's mostly chips and dust.

Best Deals for Cowboy Charcoal 13020 Hardwood Lump Charcoal, 20-Pound

I've been through a bunch of bags of this stuff because the store just up the road carries it. The bag contains way too many very small pieces that fall out the bottom of my chimney starter or slip through the grate of my grill and are wasted. The big chunks that do remain burn well and the flavor of my low and slow barbecue is good. Much better than briquettes, which I stopped using 20 years ago. But I'm looking for better options.

Honest reviews on Cowboy Charcoal 13020 Hardwood Lump Charcoal, 20-Pound

absolute garbage, just like others have said. floor sweepings, plywood, and nails are just some of trash you'll find labelled as "lump" in this bag. you might get lucky with a few oversized chunks but mostly what you get when you open a bag of Cowboy is a face full of cancerous black dust. no excuse for using this crap, look forward to hearing Cowboy Industries has gone under.......

it don't get much simpler ...... just head over to Walmart, Lowes or Hell Depot for a bag of cheap and very good Royal Oak.

your welcome!

I have been using the big green egg for about a year now. I have been buying their brand of charcoal and it is quite expensive.

I thought I would try Cowboy charcoal, it cheaper and I thought, "how much different could charcoal be?" let me tell you, it's not worth the few dollars you save. No matter how much I warm up the grill I can't get this stuff over 500 degrees. I have added more, let it catch and still nothing. With the green egg charcoal it would get to 700 in a heartbeat.

The bags also had a ton of dust and strange pieces of scrap in them.

Spend the few extra bucks on premium charcoal (I have never used any other than green egg).

If you are fortunate enough to own a Primo Kubocha grill, you gotta have one of these gizzmos. With it, very hot grill pieces can be moved about to install, for example, the indirect heat plates. The price is right, just be careful not to leave it out in the rain, parts of the tool do rust.

We have a charcoal grill so it doesn't fit quite as well as it would on a gas grill but it still covers it up really well. It's not a really thick or thin cover I would say it's somewhere in the middle. It seems to be holding up just fine under all the different weather conditions we've had over the season. The price was very reasonable. I would recommend this grill cover to any huskers fan :)

This cover looked good even though it was thinner than I'd prefer. The disappointing factor about it is the orange "T" started falling off in little pieces about 2 months into the summer. There are little orange pieces of "paint" or whatever it is all over my deck & the cover now looks horrible.

The first thing that struck me about this grill is the solid components it is made out of. Very high quality parts. I have used it a couple times so far and it performs very well, gets hot FAST!

One thing to note, this is a higher BTU grill than the variety you would likely get for the same price at Sears or Home Depot. That means that it will pull the propane out of the tank at a higher rate. Propane tanks usually have a safety valve that cuts off the flow if it feels a sudden surge going through. This gave me a bit of a scare at first until I read in the instructions about it. Just turn everything back off. Wait a couple minutes so it resets, then slowly turn everything on little by little and you will be able to get everything out of the tank that the grill is wanting.

This does have the negative side effect of draining propane tanks faster but penalizing the grill for that would be like penalizing an Olympic runner for wearing out his shoes quicker than most people.

I definitely recommend this grill if you are looking for something better than the grills at Sears, but don't feel like shelling out thousands of dollars for a Webber.

Assembly was was pretty straight forward. My 11 year old son and I put it together in an evening...not sure total time. Directions were good and it was not complicated.

Looks very nice, very happy with that aspect. Quality of parts seems good. I also like the iron grates vs the thinner metal ones on my Weber Genesis that have started to rust through (again). Yes, I know you can get iron for the Weber as well. I had my 3 burner Weber for over 10 years and it gave excellent service. Probably should've have ponied up the $700 to get another but decided to take a shot. I read too much about other cheaper brands rusting out quickly. Not much info on Dyna-Glo grills but I found good reviews of their propane heaters so thought maybe they make a quality product and bought this grill for 1/2 the price of a new Weber. Inside of the lid of my Weber has been peeling paint for a few years, have to scrape and clean the flakes regularly. I noticed this one has unpainted steel on the underside so no potential for the same issue (can't recall if ss or galvanized...not going outside to look!).

This puppy gets hot!!! Actually almost too hot. Items cook very fast and there is a bit of an issue with flare-ups off what on a Weber grill would be called the "flavorizer bars". The metal that the grease hits after dripping off the meat. I am hoping this diminishes with time and crust build-up.

If you pre-heat on high and then toss your meat on it is way too hot for most things. I scorched my first few attempts. Now I preheat high, toss on the meat, leave on high very briefly to sear, and then turn all the way down to low to cook. There is no such thing as cooking anything slow on this grill even on low.

Amazingly, everything that has come off this grill in the last month or so, even the first few scorched meals, have been tender and juicy on the inside. I guess the high heat really locks in the juices even if you overdo the outside a bit.

This is a 5 star grill if not for the flare-ups and if the "low" setting was a little lower. If will report back if the flare-ups improve with time.

Finally, the Classic Accessories Veranda Cart-Style BBQ Cover in size medium fits this grill perfectly. Quality cover but no idea why it is light tan/almost white. I sprayed it with silicone waterproofing to try to slow down the inevitable dirt staining this will get being the color it is. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HCNEWM/ref=oh_details_o01_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Best Deals for Dyna-Glo Bronze 60,000 BTU 4-Burner Propane Gas Grill with Side

I was a little hesitant to purchase this grill, and initally thought I'd need to spend +/$800 for a very good grill. Not so!

Before purchasing, I checked this out on consumer reports. It seemed to have a lower than average rating, but I couldn't figure out why.

Having had this a few months, I'd buy another one. This heats up quickly, has solid cast-iron grates, is fairly easy to clean, and very predictable cooking zones. I've cooked steaks, chicken, corn on the cob and other veggies on this, all to the delight of my family. The side burner is a nice bonus, something we use when we don't want to heat up the whole kitchen or when cooking something with strong smells. I spent 20-30 hours doing research before making this purchase, and it paid off.

Assembly took about an hour. I found the directions easy to understand and follow.

Update October 30th 2013

OK, I've used this for the whole season now. For a few months, I was grilling 3-4 times per week. It has held up well, gets hot quickly and is easy (for a BBQ, anyway) to clean. I do notice that the left side tends to run a little bit cooler than the right, but that is easily adjusted. Grates have held up well and are for the most part rust free. It does seem to run through gas a little faster than I'm used to, but not so much that I wouldn't buy it again. I bought a cover and have always had it protected when not in use. This has made a difference in how it's held up, I'm sure. Side burner has been great no need to heat up the kitchen in the summer. I boiled a dozen eggs in a large pot and the side burner worked great for that task.

I'm still pleasantly surprised I was sure that I'd be spending $600-$800 for a new grill.

Honest reviews on Dyna-Glo Bronze 60,000 BTU 4-Burner Propane Gas Grill with Side

I bought this grill about three weeks ago. I was looking for a propane powered grill with good heating power and a side burner for sauces and what not that was well below the $800 class. After reading a lot of reviews I settled on the Dyna-Glo.

It arrived with the box in excellent condition, so I trucked it around to our patio and set out to assemble it on what, at 95F, was a very hot day for us. Fortunately, the directions were clear and all the small parts were individually packaged (in a clever way) and labelled to match the directions. Most of the assembly concerns the base that the burners sit upon; I did it all myself, except for borrowing a neighbor to place the burners on the base, in an hour and a half. I am mechanically inclined, and that no doubt helped speed me along, but the directions were so plainly written that few should have any trouble.

The only problem was that the thermometer on the cover was broken. I called the manufacturer the next day and, without a single question (except for my address) or quibble a replacement was immediately shipped. This transaction may have taken all of three minutes.

With 60,000 BTU/hr you can heat things up really fast; in only a few minutes the grates and the air in the box pass 500F. With the four burners in the grill I found myself running half of them hot for the sausages and the other half cooler for the veggies. Ignition (the igniter runs on a single AA battery) and control of the burners worked well. One evening I used the side burner to cook down a fruit sauce for some tuna.

I can't yet speak for the longevity of the device but, thus far, it's been a pleasure to use and I'm happy to have all those dollars still in my pocket.

I wanted a Weber. Then I saw the $700 price tag. I had no idea how exhausting finding a decent grill would be. Everytime I found one with the features I wanted, I would read reviews about how it either burned everything, never got hot, or turned to a pile of rust within a year. Then I stumbled on this Dyna-Glo, which was the right size, had the features I was looking for, and was at a more reasonable price point.

The quality seems very good for the price. The assembly went well; everything lined up and it was well packaged with no damaged parts. It's solid once assembled and the fit and finish is very good. A couple of nice features are locking casters, a double-lined lid to keep in heat, and a nice, large thermometer.

The first use last night was with cod, chicken, and corn on the cob. During the 15 minute initial cleaning cycle, it got to about 700 degrees with all burners on high. Once cooking, the heating was very even; I didn't notice any areas that were dramatically hotter or colder than others. The cast iron cooking grates worked well, although I wish they were a little thicker and spaced more closely so that fish and items like that had less tendancy to try to fall through. The one thing I did notice is that the thermometer seemed to read a little high. Maybe it was correct, but at 375 or so, the fish took a long time to cook. I turned it up a little (the knobs are very sensitive!) and it cooked much better. I haven't used a grill with a thermometer, so it's probably just a learning curve for me.

After cooking, it heated up enough to burn everything off, so cleaning was just a quick wire brushing and an exterior wipedown. I can't say how well everything will hold up, but even the Weber had rust issues with the heat tents (flavorizers), so I don't expect it to be totally rust free it's whole life. Judging by the quality of the finish, I think it will hold up pretty well. Having spent a few bucks on a cover will also hopefully extend the life some.

All in all, this is a nice grill with a good set of features and seemingly good quality for about half the price of a comparable Weber. Don't get me wrong, if this one craps out and I can swing it in the future, I'll buy the Weber, but for now the Dyna-Glo is a nice alternative.

*UPDATE* 07/22/13 -I've cooked several items on this grill now and it works very well, but I will say that with all 4 burners on, if the grill isn't loaded with food, it can get too hot even on low. If you're only cooking a few items, lighting just 2 of the burners seems to work much better. It will still heat up well and it will give you the option of cooking directly over the heat or moving things so that they cook with indirect heat.

I like everything about this product. It cooks evenly and that's the most important feature of this product. I would recommend everyone to spend the extra cash if they have the means.

Top quality and the perfect fit. It will last a long time. Vented to reduce moisture being trapped, pulled for easy removal and more...

Great Cover but a little pricey. Much nicer that my previous one with some extra features (staps & velcro) that justifies the extra cost.

The cover is great but it took a month to receive it after a mix up with the shipper. I will say that once we contacted Shopper's Choice (Amazon) that we received prompt and professional attention specifically from Keegan.

Hey

The Ribolator....I like it but It has some problems for Me...first off I have a Weber Genesis EP-330 the ribolator will not fit in without removing the flavor bars...it bottoms out on them...thus you have your burners exposed to all the grease ect..when cooking indirect the middle burners are off and all that crap coats them and plugs them up...leaving you with a good clean up...I quess you could cover them with foil to keep it off them

Next thing is balance you better be sure the food on it is balanced and not slide around or it will tip off inside the grill..it happened on some large chicken breast as the cooked the shrunk and changed the balance and fell off..

Finaly clean up is a pain in the butt it says throw it in the dishwasher...well mine dosnt realy clean it well enough for me so you have to take it apart off the spit and scrub in the sink...much easier to just cook it indirect and scub your grill grates after use

Now to the good....Veggies...realy nice job on veggies being able to grill them in the tray and not chase them around the grates....as far as cooking goes the Ribs were great...the chicken was great and the Veggies were a delight...as far as the claim goes how rotisery food is so much better ...that is true on a rotisery because the juice of the meat stays inside as it goes around keeping it moist and tender...the ribolator is more of a ferris wheel and the juce drips out the bottom of the tray.

I think in the future I will just use the indirect heat method on my Weber...The Ribolator works but just to much trouble and clean up for me...It does have its cool factor to show your friends on a race Sunday when they see the Chicken and veggies on a ferris wheel...LOL

This cooks good. Depending on your grill, it might allow you to cook more meat with indirect heat.

The cleanup on this is a nightmare though. I quit using mine after 3-4 times because the cleanup was so difficult.

It might be dishwasher safe, but the dishwasher wouldn't even begin to clean it. I am not sure if it is the finish or what, or just because it is not coated.

I can tell you that it will make your food turn out good.

I was relieved to get our new burner for our Weber BBQ. We have had our BBQ for about 3years and we BBQ all year around. A few months ago our burner was showing some wear and we were able to order a new buner and get it with in a week. It installed easily and we were up and running with in 20 minutes. The 20 min. Included cleaning the grates and the run off catcher as well as cleaning the whole BBQ. Weber is the best BBQ we have ever had!
