Decided to refurbish my Front Avenue (Charbroil) grill that I purchased several years ago from Costco. The burners had all begun to rust and were making cooking difficult due to the inconsistencies with the heat and flames. I had looked at getting new burners from the home improvement stores, but the price for 1 burner there would cover a 4 pack from Amazon. Make sure to measure your existing burners and order the right length for your grill. Popped these in, and now my grill cooks like it did the first day I bought it.

This product was okay. Our old gas grill burners had rusted out. This gets the job done but has hot spots. Uneven gas flames.

They work fairly well. Only been a few months but look to be in good shape still. Easy install. When these rot I would give these a look once again.

Bought these to replace original burners that had been used for 7 years. We are surprised at the difference in speed as well as evenness of cooking. We are very pleased with this product.

I'm happy with these burners. I was a little hesitant because of the price but I am pleased with the end product. The holes are well sized and spaced and they seem like solid performers. Installation was easy. Lit right up. Nice blue and orange flames when needed. No idea about the durability.

This is actually my second grill. The first I used for 11 boating seasons, and it served me well. But, I started having trouble with the propane remaining on, so it was time to get a new one. The hinged lid is a great improvement because you no longer need to fuss with the metal cable keeping the lid on board. But, the best improvement is the stay cool handle thank goodness! This time around I also got the land stand, which I would definitely recommend as well. That makes it easy to convert to a more multipurpose travel grill (road trips, camping, picnics, etc.).

This grill only does one thing well: it adheres to the universal law that anything with the word "marine" in its name gets a 200% price mark-up. This terrible product would not be fit for cooking roadkill in a post-apocalyptic refugee camp. There is a lot of stainless steel in it, so it may have scrap value, but that is all.

How much do I hate this thing? Let me count the ways:

(1) The manufacturer claims this grill is wind resistant, but this can't be a true statement unless Magma only means to imply that the grill itself will not blow away when it is properly secured to your boat (see note 4 below on proper securement). Don't be fooled into thinking the flame will not blow out when the wind pipes up. The truth is that if the wind is blowing more than about 10 knots, your flame is done for. So while you are cooking with your new $180 to $200 marine grill, don't plan on going anywhere--you'll need to stand by the grill at all times so you can relight it once every 30 seconds or so.

(2) The burner must have been designed by someone who either hates food, or hates cooked food. This is supposed to be a grill, but it comes with a small circular burner about 2 inches in diameter--basically, a small stove burner. There is a heat shield you can place over the burner which apparently is supposed to distribute the heat more evenly across the cooking surface, but what it really does is catch all the heat so that your food stays pleasantly cool and raw. So if you don't like completely raw food (and you know you don't, or why are you reading a review about a barbecue grill?) your only choice is to take the heat shield off. Then you can put a two-inch burn circle in whatever you are cooking, while the rest of it stays raw. If you are really coordinated, you can use one hand to move the food around constantly to attempt to burn it all equally, while using your other hand to relight the grill every thirty seconds when the wind blows it out (see note one).

(3) The piezoelectric ignition button broke after two uses. Magma probably never expected anyone to try using this grill more than twice, so it might make sense for this feature to have a short lifespan. Why invest in parts no one will ever use?

(4) This grill is heavy, but the hardware for attaching it to your boat is flimsy and pathetic. It came with a stainless steel arm that is supposed to clamp onto a lifeline stanchion. If your stanchion is too small in diameter for the included clamp, there is a plastic shim. The clamp, the shim and the stainless steel arm are woefully unprepared for the simple task of holding the grill level. The only way I can use this grill without it wobbling so much that raw food rolls off the side while I'm trying to relight it, is to not use the attachment arm at all, and instead put my swim ladder across my cockpit seats and balance the grill between two ladder rungs. Classy, right?

(5) There is no backup plan in this design for what to do when the wind inevitably blows out your lousy 2-inch burner, and your piezoelectric switch is broken. There is no easy way to light the stove burner by hand except to take all your raw food off the grill, unlock the cooking surface from the bottom pan, and reach in with a match or a lighter, and then put everything back together, trying to move as fast as you can before the flame blows out again. Fortunately, since nothing on this grill ever gets hot, you can do all this with your bare hands.

Overall Impression: this grill might make a good emergency anchor, might be good to throw at attacking pirates and might be good if you have extra space in your dock box and you're dying to fill it up with something. If you have a new one in the box still, and you haven't opened the box, you could regift it to someone who likes raw food and goes boating in a place with no wind--maybe a lake in a cave. This is a poorly designed piece of junk, which is priced at least ten times more than it is worth. I would be happier cooking over an empty coffee can burning scraps of trash.

Best Deals for Magma Marine Kettle Gas Grill w/ Hinged Lid, Original Size

Very happy with this grill....struggled a bit with the propane bottle connection...there is slot on the valve that locks it in place once it's in the fuel neck....but it wasn't obvious. The grill design is great, lid is never in the way, easy to open, easy to clean.

Honest reviews on Magma Marine Kettle Gas Grill w/ Hinged Lid, Original Size

Magma grills use the lower cost 304 stainless vs the better 316 stainless. If you have a boat on salt water, you must get 316 stainless as 304 does not resist rust very well from salt. I've had two Magmas and the both are covered in surface rust within 6 months. This is not an exaggeration. In addition, the "special" Magma grill cleaner, does not remove much of the surface rust and is very hard to use. It takes a lot of elbow grease. If your on salt water, don't buy a Magma grill or you'll be sorry!

304 vs 316 stainless What's the difference? The simple answer is 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel while 316 contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. The molybdenum is added to help resist corrosion to chlorides (like sea water and de-icing salts).

This is the third one for me in 6 years. I have not been happy with the life span which resulted because of a poor inner liner design. I have contacted Magma about this on my first one and they were not helpful at all.

To my surprise when I got this grill the design has changed to exactly as I suggested to them to solve the problem.

Very nice quality, not to thin, for sure GREAT VALUE for the money. These are the same size as the Sears OEM part (04004831A0) but are 1/3 the cost. Originals had a ceramic coating and only lasted for about 3 years. I am hoping these replacements last as long or longer since they are stainless and will not allow oil/moisture to get under the ceramic and corrode quickly. Time will tell. Either way, I will be happy with 2-3 years as these parts always rust out first.

Note: if you have a Kenmore 122.16538900 or 720-0679R (same model, just different model names) you will need to drill two holes in the back of each diffuser. Not hard but you will need a drill and bitset. I will try adding pictures to this item.

sturdy, strong, clean. I had to drill holes in the back for it to fit my grill. Easy to do and worth the price.

Best Deals for PayandPack 15 1/16" x 5 1/2" MBP 96781 (3-Pack) BBQ Barbeque

But that wasn't a huge problem. I had to drill 2 holes in the back of each for my Kenmore grill (it has two spikes that these slide onto) so that was a pain. I don't think its a huge deal, but check your grill if you don't want to be spending time in your work shop.

Still, good quality compared to the ceramic coated ones that rusted and broke within 2 year. I really noticed the improvement in evenness.

Honest reviews on PayandPack 15 1/16" x 5 1/2" MBP 96781 (3-Pack) BBQ Barbeque

I bought these to replace the heat diffusers on my Kenmore side-by-side gas/charcoal grill. Description of this item lists it as direct OEM replacement. It is not. The shape is completely different and therefore the guide pegs on back of grill have nowhere to go. This causes the replacement part to be higher in the rear and pitch forward. I am assuming this will cause the back of the grill to be even hotter now have not used since replacing parts today. But since this product is the same as I found listed on the Sears website, I am not sure how much better I can do. Since the original pieces are rusted through I do not want to cook over them anymore, so I think I am stuck with these regardless. My grill is barely three years old and I use it 3-5 times a week, but OEM parts seem to be not around. My advice, spend the money on a Weber and know you have legitimate replacement parts if you plan on keeping your grill more than two or three seasons.

These are much cheaper than buying OEM. The original parts rusted and fell apart withing two years. I'm hoping these last a little longer. As there are no predrilled holes, I had to break out the drill and drill them myself. In all not terribly hard, but still a pain in the ass I didn't want to deal with.

Really Super Grill. You don't mess with charcoal and lighter fluid, so you can just focus on grilling. Of course, I've grilled hamburgers (grass fed/95% lean) and then just for fun grilled pineapple, and watermelon and eggplant. The Solaire is really opening up a whole new level of grilling experience. The grill heats up quickly and cleans easily afterward.

Do note that there were No assembly instructions included in the package. --

But here's a link to the instructions on the Solaire website:

I managed to figure most if out without the instructions. And of note is that the owner of the company owner responded to an email I sent on their website during non-business hours !

There is a manual for the bolt down post online. The company has been very responsive to my inquiries -that's always a good sign.

If you're looking for bulk or just something less expensive you should call your local gravel supply or garden center. this is a great design and very sturdy but the bristles on the brush are too far apart. thank goodness I can get replacement heads at the local diy store.

GOOD:

Nice looking

Matches the rest of my BBQ utensils perfectly.

Bad:

Brushes immediately folded over on first use.

Basically you can't put any significant pressure on this brush without the bristles just folding over flat. It looks to me the brushes are quite sparse and of a softer metal than one would expect. My cheapo wal-mart plastic handle one has lasted far better, shame too because this one looks so nice.

I returned it...so sad.

Just heat up the grill for 5 minutes with the top closed (using a gas Weber BabyQ 220 grill), then brush the grill surface with this and bingoa nice clean pre-heated (for great sear-marks) grilling surface in seconds! I hesitated and thought of buying other designs but this stainless steel beauty is a wonderful addition to your outdoor barbeque!

I bought this grill because it looked like it had it all, and I must say it really lived up to the expectations. Living in Sweden we have a fairly short summer that really makes you want to be out as often as you can. For me happiness lives in the ability to barbecue. Disposable grills is something that is big here, unfortunately its not very environmentally friendly or very good. So far the Son of Hibachi has been able to replace them with style.

The product description is pretty much on the money. Start-up is easy and fast, I would say the 10 minute mark can swing up and down a little depending on what coals you use. Lump coal is faster, briquettes a little slower but if you can normally light your coals with fire starters, be it liquids or other you will have no problem here. The chimney effect of the closed up grill is noticeable and works as a charm.

When you notice the top coals are lit, peeking down from the top, you fold it open and the top handles become legs for the grill sides to rest upon. What strikes you at first is the intense heat wave created by the two surfaces it is hot! Fortunately you can adjust the grilles in four levels to reduce some of that intense first heat.

We have tried cooking some different things now from hot dogs to chicken breasts to hamburgers and so far it has all worked out very well. The heavy duty grilles leave some nice black patterns on the cooking surface, just the way I think it should be.

The whole construction breathes sturdy, everything has that robust feel about it all packed with coals it weighs in on about 16 pounds (7.5 kilo) which is a little heavy but knowing that nothing about this grill spells flimsy I accept that.

Another real good thing about this combo is the Snuff-out-pouch which really elevates this purchase. Once done grilling you close up the grill again and let that chimney effect clean of your grilles. Then smoking hot you put it down in your fire retardant pouch and zip it up in litterally less than 10 seconds you are ready to go. Sure the bag heats up a little but considering the heat of the grill its nothing. The instructions state to leave it for at least 30 minutes before putting it in your trunk an obvious protection against lawsuits. We have found this to be, in our case, unnecessary. As long as it stands up it's not going to damage anything. The bag can let out some smoke initially when packed but this settles pretty fast once oxygen depravation in the bag sets in.

My only gripe about Amazons product description is that the grill ships with a "Grill N Fry cast iron griddle for cooking eggs, pancakes, etc." which is only half true. Part of the grille has a flat surface true, but I don't see how it would be enough for a pancake an egg id probably fine. Luckily you can get a complete frying surface as an accessory if you look around online for a little bit.

All in all this is a marvelous little bbq which is well worth its pretty low price tag (in my opinion). Highly recommended for the excursion barbecuer.

EDIT: I would like to clarify one thing with the snuff-out pouch. I did actually manage to burn a backpack slightly I had crammed against the side of the pouch in my trunk. The sides of the pouch does get very hot after packing so I would avoid putting anything against it for a while. THe front and back however never gets very hot.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I bought this grill 2 years ago and have loved it. My family and friends love the food I make on it as well. I have cooked on it about fifteen times and have not had one disaster or complete failure to cook good food with it.

That said, there was a learning curve too it. I first tried using MatchLight Charcoal with it, and that resulted in three-foot tall flames coming out of it during the starting process. It also did not get hot enough to sear the food, but the results were still better than I get with a gas grill.

I then tried natural wood charcoal chunks. This was a serious mistake. The grill got hot enough, and the food was as we like it, but the popping of the charcoal resulted in me constantly having to put out hot coals that flew out of it. I did not try that charcoal again.

Next I ordered some "Wicked Good Charcoal" and that has been just what the doctor ordered. It still takes about 30 minutes to get the fire good and hot, but this charcoal gets HOT and lasts well.

I've tried a variety of starter methods. A couple of sheets of newspapaper like in a chimney starter do not get the job done. The starter sticks from Son of Hibachi do well, but you need to use several at a time for best results. I've tried some MatchLight starter sticks and they do well, but burn with a black smoke that coats the grills with soot. My favorite method is to use newspaper and a jellied alcohol type starter that I get at Whole Foods. I do find that putting enough charcoal in to force the two halves slightly apart gives more air-flow to the upper half of the grill in the starter configuration, and gives a better light to the upper half.

I've found that the grills are not entirely self cleaning, but a minute with a wire brush cleans them nicely. I use Weber's non-stick spray on the grills, and this completely eliminates sticking. If I do not spray the grills with some kind of oil spray, there is bad sticking.

Some things I've found;

Thin cuts cook best.

If you want to cook thicker cuts, sear them then raise the grill, and cover the food on the grill with foil to trap the heat and help the food cook quicker.

Some wood chips give a nice hint of smoke flavor, and covering the food helps trap the smoke against the food, giving more smoke flavor.

Char Crust dry rub seasoning works GREAT at giving a good flavor and sealing in the juices.

Use some foil to block the wind if it is windy, or the food will cook unevenly.

Spray the grils with an oil spray, preferably a high-heat spray or Weber's grill spray.

Empty the grill and clean the grills if you are not going to use it for a while, as the grills will rust.

Quality charcoal briquettes are required. Don't cheap out on the charcoal. You'll be using less than half of what you'd expect to use, since you can just top off the grill rather than throwing away the old charcoal.

If using quality charcoal that gets very hot, let the grill cool down a bit before putting it in the bag. I've melted some of the piping on the bag and the zipper in one spot from putting the grill in after only a few minutes with the lid on.

In summary, I LOVE this grill, and my friends and family love the food I cook with it. Just be aware that it may not live up to all it's claims fully. I still feel it is worth it.

Best Deals for Son of Hibachi Combo with Snuff out Pouch

Let me start by saying "I love this grill!". I used it twice last weekend, once at a Nascar event. I had none of the problems that I read in some other reviews. Following the instructions, I filled the grill compartments with charcoal ( I used Stubbs), then placed 4 briquettes in the center tray and a few small torn pieces of newspaper. Then I squirted a couple of ounces of Charcoal lighter fluid on the 4 briquettes and paper in the tray (NOT on the charcoals under the grills!!). In 10 minutes it is one hot Son Of Hibachi.

For my first test, I had read the reviews saying it wasn't hot enough, so I added about 6 pieces of charcoal to each side after opening the hot grill. It worked great, but was close to being too hot. Plus it took hours for the thing to finally cool in the pouch!!

We used it at the Nascar Race in Loudon NH on the following day. We cooked Hamburgers, Brats, and steak kabobs for four guys. No complaints, everyone thought the grill was great. When it was time to go we stuck it in the pouch, waited 15 20 minutes, placed it in the car, and we were off to sit in traffic.

Now for my one complaint. When i first set up the grill, I opened the Snuff Out Pouch to insert the grill, and one of the seams just came appart, obviously it was not sewn through. I contacted the company that makes the grill by multiple emails and left messages by phone. I thought maybe they could replace the bag rather than me having to return the entire grill to Amazon after using it at Nascar. After 3 days of this, I still had not received a response. So I ended up returning the entire package, and Amazon is sending me another at no charge to me (Nice job Amazon that's why I shop here Amazon knows how important good customer service is!). So now, rather than help a customer, the manufacturer will get a perfectly fine used grill back. Not to mention that I had to sew the stupid pouch so I could use it on Sunday!

Bottom line: Great grill, just hope you never need any kind of support. Knowing that, I liked it enough to re-order a replacement Son of Hibachi.

10-19-2009

UPDATE !!!!!! I think it's only fair that I update this review. About 10 days after I first contacted the manufacturer of the grill and pouch, 4 days after receiving the new grill and pouch from Amazon, I came home from work to find a package on my doorstep that contained a new Snuff-out pouch. So....like the first pouch, I am torn (sorry). As it turns out, they heard my plea for help and sent me a new bag (nice job), but if they had replied to my email or called me on my cell phone (which I had provided in every one of my emails and voicemails)to let me know they were going to send the new bag, it would have saved me a lot of trouble! So, the manifacturer does provide decent customer service, just a bit confused.

One last thing on the new grill, the small plastic handle on the center tray cracked on first use. I applied a little epoxy, and all is fine. Main point I LOVE THIS LITTLE GRILL !!!!!

May 2011

Another UPDATE: I've used the grill about a dozen times in the past year, I still recommend to everyone who asks me about it. If you go to concerts, ballgames, etc., spend the money, you won't regret it. The bag holds the grill and has a pocket in which I carry a knife, fork and flipper, and even a small plastic cutting board all in one unit that you can carry with one hand.

Honest reviews on Son of Hibachi Combo with Snuff out Pouch

Extremely pleased with grill. Works exactly like description states. Takes less time to heat and less charcoal. Fold up for storage. We are campers and every time we use, we have people wanting to know what kind of grill this is and where we purchased it. Great improvement over previous Hibachi!!!

Son of Hibachi displays excellent design in every aspect. From the moment you take it out of the box, you realize that this grill was worth every penny. The unit is heavy-duty, beautifully finished, and the chimney start and snuff pouch work as advertised. The grills are pre-coated in wax to insure proper seasoning during the first chimney start.

Yes, the cooking surfaces are small, as the unit is designed to be highly portable. It can cook meat and sides for 2-3 people, or meat only for 3-5 people. If only they made a bigger one! But Son of Hibachi is perfectly suited for grilling dinner for a small family.

I was afraid for the price that this would be one of those super-thin plastic covers that are barely one grade above a garbage bag, but the vinyl is surprisingly heavy. It was a little big for my Brinkmann dome smoker, so there is some bagginess to it, but it's not a deal-breaker. It certainly isn't the most attractive cover on my porch, but it gets the job done.

Ordered this to cover my electric smoker for the winter. So far, so good. Cover is a bit long for my model, but better than too short.

Bought this for my favorite BBQ, George Forman of course. George said it kept him warm and dry all summer outdoors. Inexpensive, easy to use and durable, just like the grill itself!
