I bought 4 pieces to replace my corroded parts from the kenmore grille. The parts fit onto the top of the burners i bought as well from here like the originals. Sears was just asking too much for these original parts. I highly recommended them if you like replacing parts from a different vendor.

I am really torn here. On the positive side, this item seems to be of really excellent quality. On the negative side, the description is totally useless, as it is either completely wrong or missing vital information. This situation required multiple phone calls to investigate and clarify exactly what fittings the product contains and its BTU rating, as well as the product's country of origin. Therefore, I'D RATE THE ITEM AT FIVE STARS, BUT I'D RATE THE DESCRIPTIONS AT ZERO STARS, if I could. I guess that will have to average at three stars.

I always prefer to buy items made in the USA whenever reasonably possible. I specifically paid more for this item than other comparable items because the description states "USA" under "Origin". My understanding, confirmed verbally by Amazon, is that this means it is made in the USA. However, the label on the reusable plastic storage bag in which this 21st Century Company product unit is packaged clearly states the product is made in Mexico, NOT IN THE USA.

I called 21st Century's "tech support" to find out why the both the Amazon.com descriptions and the package descriptions were incorrect and/or missing information as to the connection fittings (more on that below), the BTU rating of the unit, and what was, exactly, the country of origin. Their "tech support" was an absolute joke, able to provide no information at all. I found that 21st Century is just a distributor which re-packages the item for retail sale, so they know absolutely NOTHING about the item specifications.

The short version of the long process I went through that I found out that the hose and all of its fittings are actually made by a company called Fairview Fittings and Manufacturing in New York, so they ARE made in the USA. 21st Century's packaging is apparently what is made in Mexico, or maybe they were previously using a product made in Mexico. Fairview's descriptions of its products are correct, so no one seems to know why Amazon's and 21st Century's descriptions are wrong.

So, just to be clear for any of you considering buying this item, the connections stated in the description are not correct. The descriptions state, in two different places, that the hose has 3/8-inch MALE flare and 3/8-inch MALE pipe thread. THIS IS WRONG! The ends it actually has on it for connection to other fittings are the OPPOSITE of the descriptions.

One end of the hose has a 3/8-inch FEMALE flare fitting with 3/8-inch SAE thread to attach it. This end of the hose is what is usually connected to your appliance (in my case, a natural gas barbecue). If you need a connection on the hose for your appliance other than a 3/8-inch female flare fitting, you'll have to buy some combination of adapter fittings to do so.

The other end of the hose is the male half of the quick-disconnect coupler.

This kit also comes with a 2&1/2-inch long fitting that has the female half of the quick-disconnect coupler on one end, and 3/8-inch FEMALE pipe thread on the other end. This fitting is usually connected to your natural gas supply pipe, so again, if you need anything other than 3/8-inch female pipe thread to connect to that pipe, you'll have to buy some combination of adapter fittings to do so.

The gas volume flow this unit will allow should be critically important to you before you purchase it, yet that information is not available anywhere in the descriptions. I found out, directly from Fairview Fittings and Manufacturing's Tech Support agent, that it is rated at 80,000 BTU at 1/2 PSI (or 14-inch water column) gas pressure. My barbecue, for example, uses a maximum of 52,000 BTU if all five burners are on "High" at the same time, and our local gas company says our meter outlet pressure is 1/2 PSI, so this hose assembly should work just fine for me (if not, I'll update this review). However, be sure to check your appliance's requirements (and your gas company's supply pressure on the outlet side of your gas meter) to make sure it will work for your application.

Hopefully this information will be helpful, allowing you to know what you're buying, to be sure you get whatever additional fittings or adapters may be necessary to connect it properly for your application, and to determine if its flow capacity will meet your needs.

I used a Weber charcoal grill for years. I used it to grill and smoke. I loved the taste of charcoal, but finally got tired of the hassle. When I saw the duo, I thought my prayers had been answered. They were....but not really.

This is definitely the most versatile grill on the market (I added the smoker box) but they could have done so much more to make it a 'great' grill. When I saw the price tag, I was worried about the craftmanship. My worries were justified.

First, the materials that the grill is made out of are pretty good. The steel is heavy, the grills are solid, and the frame is rigid. The problem is the design and craftsmanship. A previous reviewer complained about the wheels being cheap plastic. Chargriller must have taken the advice, because the wheels that I have are fairly solid. It took about 2 hours to put the grill together by myself. While putting it together, I noticed the charcoal side and smoker are far from air-tight, not good for charcoal and smoking. You want a very tight charcoal grill so temperature can be controlled precisely by the dampers (the Weber I had was as tight as a drum). This grill is far from air-tight. The area around the lid has about a 1/4 inch gap and the smoker has many many areas where the pieces don't fit together perfectly. There are also a few holes in the smoker where screws for the feet would have gone (the smoker can also be a standalone grill). All these gaps and cracks make it nearly impossible to control the heat. With all the dampers closed, I should be able to smother the fire/coals/wood, but the grill burns at 400+ degrees even with all the dampers closed!!!

Other Cons:

When the lids are open, the warming racks go up/back right over the lid. Anything that drips off the warming rack goes right down the lid and onto the ground behind the grill. I found this out the hard way after an afternoon of cooking burgers. What a mess!

There are no bumpers around the grilling perimeter. One bad spatula or tong move and your meat will slide right off in any direction! They should have at least put a bumper in the back!

The joints aren't tight. Any grease that drips down on the propane side in the corners between the bottom and side pieces of the grill goes right between the two pieces of metal and drips on the propane tank.

No natural gas option

Pros:

Propane, charcoal, smoker, side stove. Nuff said

Cover that was ordered separately covers everything, including smoker box.

Lots of grilling surface

Grill plates are nice, solid, iron.

All in all, I would have paid $500 for this grill if it were of better quality. I'm not to upset, because I feel I got what I paid for, a substandard grill at a low price.

Ok, so this is for the grill, NOT the price. Amazon's price on this item is WAY too high but that isn't what the review is for... I got mine at a sporting goods store for under $250 so shop around.

This is a fantastic grill, it is really versitile.

Pros:

Allows you to cook with charcoal, gas, or smoke (with the optional side firebox)

The 3 burners on the gas side are close to the cooking surface which makes it really easy to control the cooking temperature.

The side firebox somes with cooking grates for grilling 1-2 steaks

Cons:

The grease pan is difficult to clean

The ash tray can be cumbersome to remove

It could really use some better wheels, this is a HEAVY grill if you have the firebox attached and moving it around is tough.

No option for using natural gas as a fuel source

The Cons are all relatively minor in my opinion. This is a great grill, I'd buy another one for sure.

My husband and I searched and searched for a grill that could do both charcoal and gas. I found this one on Amazon. I love the fact that it offers a smoking option. The burners on the gas side fire up easily and on the charcoal side you can raise and lower the rack you put the charcoal on. It's heavy enough that it hasn't once tipped over from strong winds.(I've had that problem with other grills I've had.) I also like the fact that the gas and the charcoal are completely separate. You can smoke meat on the charcoal side while you are cooking on the gas side. I've had the grill for almost a year and it still works great!

On the con side...

-It rusts easily, even with putting vegetable oil on the surfaces like it directs you too. You have to clean out the charcoal ashes after every use and it's not the easiest to clean. The rack that holds the charcoal doesn't come off the rack that catches the ashes, so rust is bound to form. You will definitely need the cover, unless you plan on storing it inside out of the elements when not in use. A heads up on the cover...although it fits the grill perfectly, it doesn't have elastic on the bottom to stop it from coming off in the wind. We used a couple bungee cords to hold the cover on and that is working great.

-The grease drip pan on the gas side doesn't fully come off making that difficult to clean as well.

Even despite it's cons, I would recommend this grill. It serves it's purpose for the quickness of gas, but also the flavor of charcoal.

My dad bought me this grill as a house warming present when I moved to Texas in October of 2010. At this point it is less than 10 months old. Originally it worked great. I have used the gas side, the charcoal side and have smoked ribs and chicken using the attached fire (smoke) box.

A few comments about the assembly. Lots of parts but it goes together easily enough.

1)The smoke box just kind of hangs on the side with no real support built in. Pretty flimsy.

2)The tabs that hold the charcoal grill rack are very weak and I actually broke one off during installation.

3)The stainless indirect food racks are flimsy and are held in place by screwing a nut onto a screw. The nut is not fixed and the screw and nut assemblies continue to loosen and come undone through use.

5) The unit is rusting out terribly in the side burner side wall of the gas chamber. .

6) (The Biggy). This unit must have some kind of design flaw. Three times now, the unit has completely caught on fire. The first time it happened I was cooking burgers for the family. Eight to ten burgers. The side walls, bottom, and grease tray completely became engulfed in flames. I was able to put the fire out with a hose but thought I was going to have to call the fire department. I completely cleaned the unit thinking that I had overused it. It happened again two uses later and then again when I was out of town and my wife and sons had to deal with it. I won't let them use it when I am not around now and am going to call Lowe's to see if it can be replaced or returned.

I know a thing or two about grills and was in the barbeque restaurant business for 9 years. I have never seen anything like this. Please post if you have had the same problems.

I am a twelve month BBQ user. We have had a monster Stainless grill for the last 9 years and have cooked pretty much everything including the annual thanksgiving turkey. Decided this year it was time for a new grill but didn't want just another boring SS monster. Did some looking on the web and found this char-griller with great reviews and for the price at lowes (pre-assembled no less) I figured I would give it a shot. I also got the side firebox (though I didn't set it up for a week silly mistake, what a difference).

When I got it home, I went through and tightened up all of the hardware fastners, which was much better than having to actually build the whole thing from parts. I then read ALL of the direction and followed them very specifically including the all important seasoning phase. It is a good idea to buy this AFTER dinner so you are not tempted to jump right in to cooking on it as you will be disappointed if the seasoning step is skipped. I have since used this grill at least 20 of the last 30 days both gas and charcoal sides.

Setup and installed the firebox the second weekend and WHAT AN AWESOME ADD ON!!! We had some people over for a mini BBW party (yes seemes strange in early April). We smoked a rack of spare ribs for dinner all day on the charcoal side while grilling up burgers and dogs for lunch for the kids.

I wanted to also comment on the convenience of lighting charcoal using a chimney and the side burner. I have watched my father with his old Weber kettle grill for years lighting the charcoal with one of those U shaped electric lighters. This was the biggest reason why bought a gas grll to start with. Using a charcoal chimney in conjunction with the gas side burner makes charcoal grilling as easy as gas cooking and SO MUCH TASTIER!!!

Make sure you get the custom made cover too (which is made to accomodate the side firebox also). Worth the price!

I also decided at just about the one month point to go back and get the extended protection plan. Skipped it at first based on the low price, but now appreciate what a great BBQ this is a want to keep it around for many years. (4 yrs additional for only $60)

In closing this is a great grill at a great price that can be picked up locally with no assembly charge. Thank you char griller and thank you Lowes!!!

UDPATE 12/25/11

I have had this grill for the whole year now and just used it again on Wednesday for dinner. We did SMOKED turkeys for Thanksgiving (best turkey I have ever made!!!) and am still loving it. There are a few quality issues popping up:

1. the coating on the grates have started to disappear and they are rusting a bit

2. ignitor stopped working after about 3 weeks called mfg, they told me to call lowes (extended warranty), Lowes told me to call mfg. Gave up and use a BBQ lighter to start the gas side (rarely use it anyway).

3. have learned what modifications work best for me and have not looked back check out forum for great ideas

4. I did follow the instructions and oiled the grill, I also continuously re-coat with spray vegetable oil which helps to keep the grill in great shape HOWEVER, the side firebox TOP has burned off the paint coating and has surface rusted a bit nothing oil coat can't help but still a bit annoying (admittedly my fires are hot and LONG BURNING but still coating should have held up better)

REGARDLESS of my small issues above, I still HIGHLY RECOMMEND this grill. Based on how much use it has seen this year (5 gas bbq tanks mostly for charcoal ignition, over 500 lbs. of charcoal and about 150 lbs. of smoke wood) I wouldn't mind if I had to buy abother one next year. The meals I have made far exceed the quality of cooking I have been able to accomplish on my $1000 plus gas grills in the past and enjoy the ease of charcoal cooking even after coming home from work. With a good chimney and the side burner (that igniter STILL WORKS) I can be cooking on coals within 10 mins of starting about as quick as the gas side!

So the grill has pretty much rusted/rotted COMPLETELY away. About the only part which has not rotted is the base. I called Lowes Service Advantage (since I bought the $40 protection plan) and today about 10 days after my call, I rec'd in the mail a gift card for the total original purchase price including tax. Going tonight to buy another of the same grill. There is no better!!! OF COURSE I AM GOING TO AGAIN PURCHASE THE EXTENDED PROTECTION PLAN. So I get a new grill every two years I can't complain about that. Love it buy it and grill EVERYTHING!

Pros Plenty of space. Easy to move racks around. Easy to add charcoal. Can move charcoal tray up for regular grilling. Lots of air control adjustments. I highly recommend! I smoked a turkey, when it was close to being done I removed the water pan and moved the charcoal up to crisp the skin, INCREDIBLE!

Cons Water and charcoal pans are a little small. Water pan kind of tricky to load. I recommend putting the pan in the rack then filling from a pot or something after its in place. Some assembly required, but not too bad.

I have been smoking for years, The Landmann smoker is beautiful, but not practial. The wood box and water box were too small. In order to smoke 40 lbs on meat would require constant attition. You would have to stay up all night and add wood and water. My old smoker I add wood and water go to bed and the next morning all my meat is perfect. Also, you can"t light the charcole in the fire box because you would melt the handle on the water box. Beautiful smoker , I wish it would work.

I recently installed the natural gas conversion kit on my Camp Chef triple burner stove. As others have said, it was a difficult installation, and after it was complete, the flame was only about half the size of original. After emailing back and forth with customer service, they mentioned that "When you hook up to natural gas you lose about a third of the btu output on the stove. Natural gas dosen't have the pressure or the heat of propane. You can drill out the oriface in each valve to .082 inches or a #45 drill bit to get the heat back up. Once you do that you can not use it with propane again." That's a direct quote (copy and paste) from their email, misspelling and all. And when I asked if they sell replacement orifices, they offered a whole valve assembly.

Long story short, don't waste your money unless you are comfortable purchasing new valve assemblies.

We recently moved to a new location and had the option of having a gas line installed on our deck. We thought it would easy to convert our gas grill to this line and looked forward to using the grill without having to constantly fill the tank. Even though we HAD to have this kit, it was not easy to install. Many stops at plumbing stores, Home Depots, Lowes, etc. before we were finally able to connect the kit to the gas line. It works and we love it, but it was not easy to install.

I recently took delivery of a Weber NG (natural gas) Spirit, which came with a hose that looks remarkably like this one. I had the gas line extended to our deck and when I got the Weber, I found that I needed a reducing fitting that reduced the pipe diameter at the gas line to fit the hose fitting. I took the hose and the cover cap from the gas line (the line has a cut-off valve at the stub) to the local Ace hardware and a young fellow helped find the proper fitting (from 3/4" to 3/8". I also needed to add a very short piece of pipe (called a nipple) and an ell to complete the assembly. Took all this stuff home and within the hour we were grilling a steak, which turned out just right.

I'm in the market for a second hose to convert a smoker from charcoal to NG and I'll probably buy the one shown above.

This thermometer works well but is slower to repsond as compared to a previous digital version I owned. The nice feature is it's easy to clean and no batteries required, bad side is it takes about 30 seconds to a minute to get to a true temperature if you use it for spot checking. Its OK, serves the purpose.

Before giving up on your wireless thermometer, try replacing the probe! I'm on my third probe now, which is frustrating, but these things are only $15 bucks. A new 'Grill Alert' is $70! Each probe that I've had seems to last a few years before I start getting screwy readings. When I replace the probe, the unit works fine again. I think the probes are only rated to 400 degrees, so that's definitely the weak link in this otherwise excellent system. Now I'm ordering two probes, just so that I can have a spare ready to go.

The probe has a braided metal outer jacket on the cable that causes any flexing of the cable to strain the cable where it exits the probe. This condition causes failure (shorting of the sensor wires to the jacket) at that point. I have had 2 other probes with this type of cable that failed in that mode. The best type of cable is a thick silicone jacket like used on microwave temp probes.

My thermometer kept losing the signal during cooking. After replacing the batteries several times, I started shopping for a new one. That's when I stumbled onto this replacement probe. The alder wood chunks were delivered promptly. Uniform chunks are easy to divide into 4 ounce portions for soaking and smoking. Great for smoking sockeye salmon.

Son Of Brisket Large Charcoal Grill Review

I own a 4 ft. Son of Brisket, now for about 10 years. Most people don't like to cook with charcoal and the reason is, it's hard to get the coals hot. But it's easy if you know the trick, and the trick is to get some Weber Chimmey Starters and three sheets of newspaper. You turn the chimmey Starter over and stuff it with three sheets of newpaper and turn it back over and fill it with charcoal and light the newspaper on fire in about 20 to 30 minutes your going have some glowing coals ready for cooking. Now to get on with the review, the Son of Brisket is two products in one, depending on the configuration you want to use. You can grill or smoke with it, this is what makes it very unique and it's easy to control the cooking temperture, due to it's simple design. I have left my grill outside for 10 year's and there are no signs of rust. The only problem I've had is the temperture gauge stop working, notified Tiernan and they sent me one free of charge, now that's what I call service. There's nothing like pulling off, a couple of racks of fall off the bone ribs and the brisket so tender, that it will make a Great Dane want to turn around and kiss a bulldog. If I had to buy another grill, I'd buy a Son of Brisket in a New York minute, bottom line.

I got my 4-48 SOB direct from the Mfg. I have had pits before from Texas and none compare to this one. First off the size of the SOB will let you cook anything and anyway you prefer. Want to grill -16rib-eyes no problem. Want to slo-cook -6slabs of ribs laying flat..gofor it!! To get this size of pit from anyother pit mfg in the state of Texas will cost you double and big time shipping costs. The smoker box will let you slo cook all day long at 250 degrees..just add a little briquets every hour and that is it. Some prople dont understand why I like large bbq pits. It is really quite simple. I like them for their flexability. You dont have to have the whole sucker full of food. But you have safe spots. You can sear steaks and chops and then move them to a cooler area to finish up. You can throw in two full briskets or a small pig with no problem. This pit is made to last. The body is 14 gauge steel and the door is 11 gauge. You get a top notch pit thermometer as well. There is no need to have a bbq to grill with and a smoker for lo and slo. The SOB does it all. If you want to do competition Que in your backyard get a SOB!! This pit is pound for pound the best around. I should know, I have just about had them all!!

Got the 4f grill for my B-day and Love it. It is a solid heavy grill. has wheels on the bottom to move it around and lock it in place. Has a huge area for grilling and is completely rust free. The customer service is the best ever. Once again this is a 100% USA MADE. It took me months to find a grill made in the USA. I did not want anything made in China. I had been through 2 China made grills and was sick of them falling apart plus there was not customer service. You can tell that the builder took alot of pride building this grill. It is a great conversation piece. Once I started grilling on this heavy duty grill all the other grills I would see in Lowes or Home depot seemed so flimsy and breakable. It comes with a smoker compartment and has adjustable openings on the side and on the chimney. Also there is a slot that pulls out and you can dump your ashes in about 20 sec. I got 2 containers of herbs and a detailed direction manual that included a recipe in the back for ribs and rub. Because it is so heavy when the top closes and it keeps all the smoke and heat in. I have to use half the normal coals becaues it stays hot 450 degrees for atleast 3-4 hours withougt replenishing. I would hightly recommend getting the custom fit cover for it. It fits like a glove and is a nice tan faux leather color.

Downside and yes there is only one downside is that the grate is not adjustable, but since it has such a large grilling surface you can easily do indirect grilling so that compinsates for the non adjustable grate. Thanks SOB! Your the BEST!!

It is a good fit but paint chipped near the hole where they are tied together. probably due to repeated movement during shipping. Maybe taping them together will be a better alternative. I can't say it is heavier than the original but it is still a good alternative.

Ever just burn out all the parts in the grill and then find out you're hosting an event! I did did what any guy would do and go pick the parts up from a box store only to find it's not there. Boom a few minutes in Amazon and I could have saved all my running around.

I ordered this because my old one is so rusted and I had to replace it. I hesitated at the beginning but once I received the order I was so happy that it matches and it is what I expected you to be. The product look like the original one that came with my grill. I have been using the product for over a month now and it still looks brand-new because I take care of it and wash it off every time I use it and I couldn't believe how well the product is made.
