After almost a year of using my BGE I realized that I have to replace the gasket on the lid rim. I bought the standard BGE gasket kit, applied it with the 3M spray, and it seemed ok. But as my skills grew I started getting into higher heat cooking for steaks and chops, and noticed that the standard gasket was quickly shredding. In fact the inward sides were literally burned off. I decided to take a chance on this product, even though it is a bit more expensive and WOW it is tons better. Made out of Nomex --that just makes sense. It installed the same way the regular gasket did but wears much better and doesn't disintegrate with high heat. I wouldn't get any other kind of gasket liner.

I fried my factory gasket.

Bought this as a replacement. I hope I don't need to replace in a while cause the process itself was a pain in the butt, but for the most part, this seems to be holding up WAY better than my original BGE Gasket.

This is a gazzilion times better than the original. Takes a little elbow grease to install but well worth it.

Honest reviews on Nomex Hi-temp, Flame Retardant Gasket Upgrade Kit for Big Green Egg

The gasket is definitely better than the one that comes standard. Having to disassemble the lid in order to replace the gasket was a chore, but there's no way around this step. Haven't done pizza yet, so I don't know how truly "fire retardant" the gasket actually is. If you've singed off your OEM gasket, I'd go with this one as a replacement.

Great product. Worth the money. Bristles don't bend or fall off in my experience. My previous bbq brush was leaving metal bristles behind and I was worried about them mixing with food.

Seems fine for the price, but this is not 21" as listed in the Amazon description. It is 17", and even says so on the tag. Not worth the trouble of returning, though, and should still work well enough.

This is a great grill brush. You don't need to put much pressure on it to clean your grill, and it holds up without having the bristles bend. GrillPro did a good job on this one. Highly recommended.

I greatly prefer this to the square head plastic brushes available at the discount stores. Fire up the grill and brush it off while the grate is hot. Brush it off after you've finished grilling. While the handle is plastic, there's no plastic near the bristles. This brush is tough and cleans wonderfully.

I have had mine for a few years, it is smaller than most grills, but it makes up for it but the succulency of the meat, which grills to perfection.

Fantastic for picnics, easy to transport, and easy to keep clean.

not happy with new burner, first use had soot on foil used on baked potatoes. tried to keep flame low but still produced a yellow flame near center section of burner. Not at all happy.

I knew I had a Char-Broil with a similar though rusted out burner that measured 22" long. It wasn't really usable anymore so I took a chance and ordered this. I just needed a Philips head to screw on the feet and tubes. The tubes are a crimped metal and bendable, I adjusted these to the curve of the old solid tubes and it slipped right in. It's probably a very good idea to not stop there, but actually finish and slip the little lock keys over the tubes before calling it done. It locks the end of the tube over the nipples on the grill, they can help prevent those nasty propane fires and potential explosions.

I'm just wondering if this will last longer than the original one, about 4 years.

Best Deals for Char-Broil Universal Fit 22" Bar Burner

In a similar product (Char-Broil 2784253), one review stated that the Venturi pipe is too big for installation. The pipe has a maximum diameter of .850. I too had this problem (Kenmore grill). My solution was simple. I have a portable drill with a cone shape grinder attachment. With this attachment, I was able to enlarge the two holes in the grill box in a couple of minutes.

Not sure of the diameter of similar products. Too bad the manufacturers arn't sufficiently smart enough to list this dimension. I only rated this item as a 1 because of the missing info not because of its quality or performance.

Honest reviews on Char-Broil Universal Fit 22" Bar Burner

Fixed a grill so we did not have to buy a new one. Worked great. It would help if it stated the size of interior it would fit. We did have to guess on the size of part to buy.

This fit my ~27" wide CharBroil Quicset grill almost perfectly. I was going to get a new grill, but figured I give this a try. I'm glad I did. My old burner was rusted and falling apart. While it is super easy to install this keep in mind you have to probably clean your grill first. And that's mess. I purchased a citrus degreaser like this one Orange 88 Citrus Degreaser 1 Gallon from HD, put it in a pre-mix sprayer like this one Gilmour Select 'N Spray No Pre-Mix Sprayer 499 Teal/White and used that to pre-clean the whole grill. A little elbow grease after that the grill was ready for this. I just followed the instructions and didn't run into any issues.

My grill works better than before (and possibly even better than when it was new since this looks better quality).

They were not what I was expecting and do not look like the pictured ones (as that is what I wanted) they are thicker and do not stretch very well, already broke 4 of them. Would NOT buy these again. The actual pictured items are thinner and stretch over your containers much better.

I was looking for a shish kabob set for the grill, it seems with just the skewers the food gets burned and its sticks to the grill grate. With this set the skewers are great and the cage to set them in fits on the grill great. The veggies and meat were delicious !!! I highly reccommend this product :)

This works great on the grill or in the oven. I like the flat spears keeps the vegies from falling off the scure. I would recoment this for anyone.

Best Deals for Fox Run Shish Kabob Set

The skewers that came with this set roll over and do not stay where you want them for even cooking. I am however happy with the set overall; the set does keep the bobs off the grill and there is ample space between the skewers.

Honest reviews on Fox Run Shish Kabob Set

I would give this a five star rating but the item I received was not the same as in the picture so I lowered the review by one star. I'm not sure if this was an unintentional mistake or not but it is not the same as the one in the picture.

In the photo the skewers are round and bronze looking but the item I received are black and have a flattened sort of knife-like appearance instead of being round. The design is interesting since it seems that the food will be less likely to spin around on the skewer since it's flattened but BBQ is not what I was intending to use it for.

I have gotten into polymer clay beads and figured that this would be perfect to use for making and baking them on the skewer so they would have a hole and wouldn't lay flat on the baking tray causing one side to be 'dimpled' from where they clay sat. Since I did not receive the round version as shown in the picture I am a bit disappointed by this purchase.

That saidI'll still be keeping it since it seems to be a decent product and shish kabob's are awesome... but if you are looking for round skewers then look elsewhere.

Instant read...not quite, but close enough. it will take about 2-3 sec to get a final reading, works better if you insert in to the meat then turn it on. the controls are switchs and not buttons so there is less of a worry of accidentally turning it so battery life should last

I bought this on the 4-for-3 sale and have been very happy with it. We BBQ a lot and I am always worried that the meat isn't cooked thoroughly, so this gives me piece of mind. I do like the on/off switch which is great IF you remember to turn it off. I'm afraid that I leave it on more often that not, but luckily the battery continues to live. I think the other reviewer might have just received a faulty unit and could have returned it for a replacement instead of trashing it. I give this 5 stars because I can't think of anything I don't like about it.

Honest reviews on Outset F800 Digital Instant Read Thermometer with Protective Sleeve

This thermometer works great and quickly. However it doesn't have an auto-off function, so it is easy to leave it on for an extended period of time, which you must be careful not to do. The only error is user, so it's a pretty good product. Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone who can remember to turn it off.

I have purchased several of these type of thermometers before and have been disappointed in the accuracy. Even the name brand was 4 to 5 degrees off.

I test by measuring boiling water. This one came to 212 deg f +/1 degree. I couldn't ask for more.

I am buying a second one for a backup and extra for my son is starting to BBQ.

Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

These grilling planks are simple to use--just soak them in water for a couple of hours and then put the lucky fish or meat item onto them and grill away!

I used them for grilling a large salmon fillet, and it turned out delicious! When the planks and fish came off of the grill, the smoky cedar aroma made my mouth water. The fish turned out flaky and moist.

However, these planks have a couple of cons that I wish I had understood beforehand.

1. They are made in China.

2. They are not meant to be reusable, and they cost over four dollars each so they are a bit of a splurge.

However, I do recommend giving them a try, especially if you enjoy learning new grilling techniques or have been looking for an easy way to grill fish.

I ordered this heavy (33 pounds) little jewel from Amazon a week ago, got it much earlier than expected and tried it out the day I got it. I now have 4 grills: An "oil barrel" type that is perfect for when the family tribe shows up, 2 Weber kettle types in different sizes for weekend entertaining and now the Lodge.

I've had several cast aluminum discount store hibachi's over the years and after the wooden handles fall off, the legs become impossible to tighten and then the "adjustable" supports for the grill crack. I don't see that happening with this hibachi.

Let the grill pre-heat, spray it with PAM and then enjoy the meal. The heat is even, cooking times may be a bit faster than you think, but the dish will be excellent.

HOWEVER! If one is cooking on a wooden deck, as I do, invest in some bricks or concrete pavers to go under the feet. Like all cast iron, this sucker retains heat and you don't want to burn your house down while entertaining guests.

Look for the book "The Honerable Hibachi" by Kathryn Popper. An excellent guide/recipe book.

I wonder if this would be safe to use in a large fireplace in winter months. Any ideas?

I'm thinking about getting another Lodge and then finding a home for the smaller Weber.

Get one and then enjoy your hibachi.

Update Feb 26, 2006:

I've now had the Lodge Hibachi for 4 months and typically use it several times a week. Clean-up is even easier than it was when new. Remember to put a little olive oil or PAM on the grids first and the seasoning improves. In cold, rainy weather, the hibachi fits and cooks nicely in my fireplace (thanks, Ukiechris!), but I crack a window when I do that.

Although quite heavy, it's a great picnic grill and will easily cook chicken, steaks or burgers for 4 people. My Webers must think I don't love them anymore. I do, but the Lodge is perfect for 1-4 people and chicken cooked on the hibachi has a flavor my kettle or barrel grills just can't match.

Besides cooking for that tribal gathering, I'll let you know if I find something the Lodge can't do.

A great little grill! Though I grew up with weber, kettle type grills, and even tried a trash-picked gas grill, I have never used a grill that cooks so consistently well.

I use mine with hardwood charcoal -this gets the temperature hot, fast. As soon as the charcoal is lit up I spread the coals outward, drop the grill on top (on the high side of the legs), and let it warm up for a couple minutes. Once the cast iron is warmed up the heat radiates evenly across the cooking surface. To check the temp, I hold my hand 4 inches over the top of the grill -if I can hold it there for more than a couple seconds, it is not hot enough. Without adding charcoal, I usually have just enough time to do two batches on the grill.

For steak, I leave the meat on for four minutes each side. When I pull it off, it has a nice crispy crust, and a perfect pink inside. When I cook burgers, I leave them on five minutes each side. And, chicken, I'll take a boneless, skinless chicken breast and pound it flat with a fry pan before tossing it onto the grill (this prevents the common problem of dry on the thin end and too pink on the thick end). Four minutes each side, and when the milky juice flows out when pricked with a fork, you know that it is perfect and juicy. I cook fish in a similar fashion. A little flavor tip: Some coarse kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper added to your meat before cooking is usually all you need to have excellent results.

Now, for roasting or smoking, this is not the product for you. Since there is not a lid it would be impossible to cook a whole chicken, for instance. Buy a weber for that. But a weber will never acheive the kind of perfect steaks and burgers that you get from one of these.

We have had our grill for three years now. It has lived outide our home the entire time in all kinds of weather rain, snow, ice, or sun. And I was grilling in all conditions. I have performed absolutely no maintenance -never oiled it, never cleaned the ashes. It seams perfectly happy in this state of useful neglect.

If you want a great charcoal grill, this is what you want.

One of my friends received this as a gift to use for tailgating parties. After a few uses, he decided it took to long to cool off, was to hard to clean and had put it back in the box with the intention of setting it out with the trash! Fortunately before he did, he saw me looking at it on this website and asked if I planned on buying it. I said yes and he said don't because he had one that he was going to throw away. If I didn't mind it being used and a little rusty, I could have his. I took it. It was rusted but I scrubbed it, oiled all the parts, and seasoned it in the oven (it was still cold outside so I couldn't fire it up)!

This little grill came in so handy when we bought another house in the spring and removed the stove to make way for the new one. I cooked on it everyday. What my friend found as a disadvantage, I found as an advantage, it stays hot for a long time!

I grilled everything, half smokes, kabobs, burgers, chicken, veggies, fish, etc. . . and nothing stuck! I also grilled ribs on it. I sliced them into individual ribs, placed them on the grill, and covered them with foil (crimped the foil around the rack with tongs). They turned out really good. I used my little cast iron skillet on top of the rack to scramble eggs, and blacken steaks (lots of coals needed for that).

The grill is very durable and as long as it is properly taken care of will provide many years of grilling pleasure! I really like it because the grill rack can be put in the sink for easy clean up and as long as it's properly seasoned, I don't have to worry about my food sticking to it.

I also have a 22" weber kettle grill that I use when I want to grill a lot of food or large items. If I don't, I set this one inside of it on the grate and use it instead. This is an excellent grill for a small household, and I recommend it over the other hibachi type grills. It's great for camping but keep in mind that since it's cast iron it takes a long time to cool down, so start grillin' early!

Honest reviews on Lodge L410 Pre-Seasoned Sportsman's Charcoal Grill

I love using the Sportman's Grill. It gets hot fast and temperature control is easy with the damper and two-position grate. I keep mine seasoned with pam and keep the water out by covering it with an old cookie sheet while it cools down.

This grill is definitely for hardcore charcoal users. I can see where less experienced grillers might not be able to get good results. If you need a thermometer to cook a steak, this is not your grill. If you cam measure temperature by how long you can hold your bare hand over the coals, this grill is for you.

I only gave it four stars because I don't find it very easy to clean out. All of the loose parts have to be removed (grill, charcoal grate, damper door, and the front door) to get all the ash out. Also, I find the carrying handle is nearly useless. The grill is unbalanced so that if you try to pick it up with all of the aformentioned parts attached, it tips over and all the parts end up on the ground. Be careful.

Pros:

1) Beautiful sear marks and flavour

2) Preseasoned, so it's easy care, just wipe down with an oily paper towel, and remember to cleanup the ash after use.

3) Simple effective no-frills design.

4) Can be used as an outdoor firepit.

5) Sturdily built.

6) The oval shape is much more space-efficient than the round one:

a) for finding somewhere to put it,

b) the cooking surface you can fit 6 burger patties on this, flank steak, a full rack of ribs, good sized slab of salmon...(not all at once!) plus two or three medium potatoes wrapped in foil next to the coals. You can cook for 2-6 pple.

c) in arranging the coals for the right type of heat for what you want to cook.

Cons:

1) No lid -For a lid, I would suggest the Cajun Classic brand cast-iron oval dutchoven flipped upside down.

2) Matching oval-shaped Lodge cast-iron Dutch oven is discontinued (could be used as lid, griddle and dutch oven).

3) It is heavy

4) It is ugly

5) Design too basic? Could be made more user friendly with height-adjust option during cooking. Currently, you have to flip the grill over to change height.

You have to really know your coals. Not very charcoal-phob friendly.

6) Limited use:

a) Cast Iron retains heat and cools slowly, so not very pratical for anything where you might have to move it before it cools.

b) Needs to be baby-ed: water + ash = lye, which will eat away at the cast iron bottom causing rust. So no open grilling in a snowstorm, during unstable weather, or leaving out overnight to cool. You have to go back out when it cools to put it under some sort of cover.

Needful accessories:

1) Oval dutch oven to be flipped upside down and used as a lid.

2) Chimney starter.

3) dutch oven lifter which can we used to lift the grill grate and adjust the height while grate is still hot.

4) alternately a pair of heat resistant gloves.

5) 2 pairs of heat resistant tongs, one for fiddling with the coals/ash and another for cooking with.

6) The nylon cover to help protect it from weather (better than nothing, but a garage or shed is best).

Conclusion:

Love it for its efficient size and shape, great sear marks and flavour. Hate it for when the sky threatens to snow/rain.

Precaution for those who live on the shore:

I live by the shore and have salt water mist roll in overnight. I MUST move it into the shed, as moisture/mist/condensation will collect even under the protective covering. Also, a well oiled and cleaned grate will rust in the salt mist if left out overnight.

I have had this grill for a week. I absolutely love it. Its ability to QUICKLY climb to high heat or to HOLD heat and bake in a moist sealed environment puts it into a different category than a gas grill or a Weber Kettle grill.

I have cooked a pork rib roast at 350 that came out great. With a moist and smoky environment.

I have had it up to 650 and did fabulous burgers. They had a brown and crispy surface with out being dried out.

The problem comes in when I want to get it below 300.

There is too much air coming in from the bottom vent. I was going to seal the back of the vent where it seals to the ash pan. When I removed the ash trap to work on the vent-I found that the entire round ash trap bottom is just tacked to the top in a butt joint and there is already a gap at one place where it is separating from the flat top part that butts up against the sealing gasket for the ash trap. The metal is deformed in another area directly behind where the vent attaches. Said another way the metal had already deformed behind the vent slot.

I question the long term air tightness with this construction detail. What use is a sealing gasket on the ash trap when the whole area below it is just butt jointed and tack welded in several places?

The photos are available on the customer images when you are viewing the product. Take a look it is quite startling.

This detail is on the removable ash trap and in theory this small part of an otherwise great grill could easily be improved. It looks like this joint may become more and more leaky over time.

The photos for what I am describing are the customer photos when you are viewing the product page.

UPDATE 4-25-2012

I contacted CharGriller about this problem. They say they will replace the ash trap as a warranty item.

The thing is you MUST HAVE YOUR RECEIPT. So if you buy this Akorn Kooker save your receipt. Thank goodness that Lowe's is great about issuing a new one. Just as Amazon is great at letting you go into your history and print a receipt.

They also had no word about if the replacement ash trap will be made the same way. This is absolutely a design created problem.

UP DATE 5-22-12

Char-Griller did sent a new ash trap and it had the same defects and developed leaks only not as bad. This unit cooks much better when it is air tight.

Here is a link to the KAMADO GURU forum in which they cover fixing the air leaks. In addition some people have used theirs extensively and feel it is holding up well.UPDATE: 6-2-2012

There is an element to the design of this AKORN that people should be aware of. This unit is egg shaped. The result is that the top over hangs the more narrow bottom. Any fat that renders out will either be caught in a drip pan on top of the smoke stone diffuser or it will run down the sides. Any grease that reaches the ash trap area will either drip into the ash pan or run under the top flange and soak the gasket on the ash trap seal.

Cleaning the ash trap will remove the oil that has collected there. The sealing gasket should also be checked and DE-greased if it is wet with grease.

I put a grill grate on the smoking stone position and built a fire to get more intense heat to do burgers. I filled the outside edge of the grate with 20% fat burgers. I got nice crispy burgers. When I closed the lid and shut the top and bottom vents----the dome temp gage shot up to 650F.

The next cook was going to be three pork butts a couple days later. Except I could not get the ash pan off to clean it. To make a long story short---the ash trap gasket was glued on to the separating surface with carbon. I had to pry it off and scrape the carbon crystals off both the mating surface and the gasket. A new gasket is available from Char-Grill. To install it just pry with a plastic object between the gasket and the flange it is attached to. The gasket is held in with metal attachments that snap out. The new one just snaps in. This takes about five minutes.

Users should check the gasket for oil when they empty the ash pan. There is not likely much chance for a grease fire while doing a low and slow cook. It can happen the next time you take it up to 600. A drip pan should be used for low and slow to catch as much grease as possible.

This probably is not a good grill to use for direct high heat grilling of fatty things like 80% burgers or sausage. The high heat and the abundant oil are what caused mine to catch fire.

As I inspected the design more I did notice that the very out side edge ot the grate extends over a gap between the inner fire bowl and the outer insulated shell. Any grease that gets into this gap will run down to the ash trap with no chance to burn off. I believe that this is what contributed to my grease fire. i now keep any thing that I cook back from the edge and over the inner fire bowl.

DESIGN MODIFICATION---If a metal flange were installed above the ash trap area and sloped to the back. A pipe could be run out the back and the grease caught in a bucket.

UPDATE 10-2-2012

I have used this CharGriiler Kamado since April about 3 times a week. If you are interested in Kamado style cooking this is a good place to start. The AKORN gets the same results as the more expensive Kamado style cookers that start around $900 and quickly end up in the $1500 to $2,000 range.

You can grill at 650 degrees or do true BBQ at around 250 degrees. I have done nine pork butts for pulled pork with great results. I have done ribs, chicken thighs, chicken breasts, steaks, hamburgs, WOKED vegetables,ETC and all were great.

You can cook chicken with the skin on without getting the typical huge flare up. In fact there is no fire at grill level at all. I do find that slashing the skin on the thighs and cooking them skin side up works best.

I have not had a grease fire since the one noted above. I now take it up to 600 and do a burn off immediately after I cook something fatty and I keep what I cook over the inside of the fire bowl.

To get good performance you will need to put felt behind the vent slide, seal behind the vent to the ash trap area, and any gaps in the seam between the top of the ash trap and the outer bowl. I have had to replace the felt behind the slide three times so far. There is a lot of information about these mods at the Kamado Guru forum--in the Char-Griller AKORN Kamado/ King Griller group and in the topic section Mods and Fixes. This is a must visit site if you own one of these.

This cooker heats up fast and is slow to cool down so the techniques needed are different from other grills. They are not difficult just different. There is a lot of info about this in the AKORN section at Kamado Guru.com in the ----starting a fire low and slow definitive. I find a dual temp digital thermometer ( grate temp and meat temp ) to be extremely helpful. I find the dome thermometer to be slow to respond.

I love the taste of lump charcoal and wood chunks on my food.

In my opinion this grill is a bargain but you will need to take an active and on going approach to keeping it air tight to get the best results. Yes I would buy it again---but be warned you will want one of the pricey Kamados in a few years down the road. Do notice that I said want. This grill will last for many years if you keep it coved and out of the weather and the food will taste the same coming out of the AKORN or a $1,000 ceramic kamado.

EDIT 4-22-13

Lowe's finally put a display model out this year and the air slide was even more sloppy than mine. It litterly rattled in the track.

BJ's had two of these AKORNS on display that are now called the King Griller AKORN. One air slide was so tight that it was difficult to adjust and the one on the other was very smooth and it had less play that the Primo Oval XL that I looked at. So it does appear that some of the models for sale this year now have good air control on the bottom.--with out putting felt behind the slide. This is encouraging--I just wish that mine was a made to those tolerances. The truth is both of the units at BJ's were so tight thqt nothing could fit behind the slide.

In addition the center insert now is all grate and no emblem to block the heat--IMO another good thing.

It does appear that CharGriller is refining the AKORN as time goes on. It may be hit or miss though.

The Man Cave Meal demo videos for the CharGriller AKORN are no longer available to the public. If you need advice on tightening up an AKORN there is plenty available on the Kamado Guru site ---in the section-CharGriller AKORN Kamado in the section for various brands of Kamados. Many people are now reporting that they do not need any after market sealing---BUT the quality of product is not uniformly consistent and some say the one they have still needs it. IMO the AKORN remains a bargain along with the ceramic Vison Kamado's.

I am am still using my AKORN and have been through two full seasons of cooking now. You owe it to your self to look into Kamados if you enjoy out door cooking. The food is fantastic and easy to make on a Kamado.

Eventually I will buy either a Kamado Joe-Big Joe with a split fire box and flexible grate set up or I will buy a Primo XL with a split fire box and the accessories to make it flexible.

There new videos being released on the Kamado Joe you tube site that demonstrate Kamado cooking. These are linked to from the Kamado Guru site. If you end up buying any Kamado --the Guru site is well worth looking at. Just do a search for Kamado Guru. There are plenty of documented cooks with pictures to inspire you.

If you have any question having to do with Kamados you can post it on KG and most likely will get an informed answer--because the people there are knowledgeable and helpful.

We compared the Big Red with Big Green Egg, Primo, Kamado Joe, and the Big Keg. The price differential was substantial and we doubted whether it could perform up to the competition. However, for $300 vs $1,000 how could we go wrong?

Since our recent purchase, we have smoked pork back ribs twice, pot roast, smoked salmon, and a pork roast (we only missed one weekend for grilling). The results have been wonderful. There is a learning curve in shifting from a traditional gas grill. We had to gain experience utilizing the right proportion of fuel and the proper air flow on the Big Red through the vents at top and bottom. But we are having great success and learning quickly. Now, we really crave the slow cooking/smoking of the ribs (210 degrees for 6 to 7 hours with a Kansas City style rub and the last hour with Sweet Baby Rays.)

The slow cooking is a very easy and low-attention cooking process. This is in sharp contrast to the higher temp cooking on a gas grill coupled with the very irregular hot spots. The cooking on the Kamado is warm, moist (less air), and uniform heat.

The quality of the Big Red unit is high, it is easy to assemble, easy to clean, easy to start with electric starter ($8 at Menards). Big Red will get up to temp in a about 10-15 minute for low-temp cooking. For low temperature cooking, we do not ignite all the fuel at once and keep the temperature low. Creating a high temperature and scaling back can take 45 minutes. The unit is incredibly well insulated and the only way to reduce the temperature is to suffocate the embers.

High temperatures can be obtained in about 10 minutes. This is quicker than the low temp. cooking since there is no concern for slow steady heat. Just open the air supply vent at the bottom and the vent at the top, and you have an intense cooker of 600 degrees. This is great for cleaning the grill and searing.

Back to slow cooking/smoking: We use a mix of large Mesquite lump coal from Sam's and smaller lump coal of various blends of wood from Menards (we use smoking pellets for flavor). Once temperature is obtained, we can maintain the constant 200-220 for 7-plus hours. We really like the practicality and durability of the steel structure versus the ceramic. We live in Chicago and we don't worry about cracking a ceramic egg by the radical heat change. The lid on the BGE is extremely heavy to lift whereas the Big Red (BR) is light weight. The Big Red has stove gaskets that are held with clips. We liked the ease with which these can be replaced vs the scape-off/glue-on with BGE. It is simple and easy to remove the ashes from BR: release 2 levers, slide forward, and remove the bottom section and dump. With the BGE, you crouch down and scrape out the ashes through a vent.

The cast iron grate has a practical feature for bearing the overhead rack for extra capacity. We use this for smoking potatoes. We grill 3 full slabs of ribs using a inverted wire rack resting on the main grate (cut ribs in 2 equal sections and stacked upright in 6 slots).

Customer service is responsive and pleasant. I was not careful and dropped the cast-iron grate and cracked it in half. The replacement grate was shipped the same day and we received it in 2 days.

We used an Oneida large pizza stone and rack from Bed Bath and Beyond. The rack was a perfect fit for straddling the inside tabs and suspending the pizza stone to deflect the heat for indirect cooking. I learned that spilling cold water on a hot stone causes them to crack (my wife has great patience with my experiential learning.)

I was a committed gas griller for the practicality and convenience (we use natural gas rather than a refillable propane tank). However, the ease of use and wonderful smoked-cooking of the Kamado have shifted the gas-grill to the back burner (pun intended).

We follow a number of the recipes from Hi-tech barbecue on You Tube and BGE forums.

We use the Kansas City rub from Cabelas for the ribs and marinate over night.

This an absolutely great value and has dramatically changed our attitude toward grilling. Our whole family looks forward to the weekend meal from our smoker. At $300, this is a steal.

There are no draw backs on this one.

UPDATE 2-18-2013

I purchased the Auber Industries for Temperature Controller for Large Big Green Eggs Item #: SYL-1614SYS-G for $130. This accessory controls the temperature to within 5 degrees. It takes all of the challenge out of controlling the temperature. It is a fan-powered air supply that inserts into the channels of the lower air vent of the Kamado. It is not battery operated. Rather, the Auber plugs into an outlet. Auber makes precision controllers for industry and found a niche for the kamado cookers. This is a very reasonable price and does exactly as designed.

Required:

1. Place some felt on the metal flange of the controller to give it an air-tight seal.

2. Optional: Remove the spring attachment. This is required for other smokers. You can leave it in place.

3. Wrap the electric wire that runs to the temperature probe with aluminum foil to provide added protection from heat.

4. I prefer to bring the Kamado up to the set temperature, and then activate the controller. I feel the heat gain can be too aggressive with the controller and it will overshoot the targeted temperature. Then it is difficult to bring the temperature down.

5. Once the controller is in place and operational, close the top vent on the Kamado. Especially at low temperatures (200 degrees), the coals will suck air through the top vent and exceed the set temperature.

6. When opening the lid for more than a few seconds, unplug the air controller. Otherwise, it will sense a drop in temperature and pump in air and heat up the coals.

7. This is a powerful little air controller that works with great precision when following the above procedures.

8. The unit is NOT designed to operate at below 32 degree outdoor weather. I made a cardboard box and have a low-wattage incandescent light bulb (do not let it get close to the controller. It will melt it. It can also burn the box. !!!!!! Be CAREFUL !!!!!!!!) I have used this successfully at 2 degrees outdoor temperature.

I got my new grill last week, and spent the weekend learning to use it.

First I should mention the previously mentioned air leak issue. In the current version of the grill, there is no air leak issue. The new cast iron top vent is designed to stop all air, except what you have dialed in to pass through the vent. If you turn it off, it will stop the air flow, and extinguish the fire. It has a high-temperature o-ring made of a silicone rubber, and has a nice tight feel to it. The lower vent seems to be fit good enough to do what it needs to do. But with two dampers (top and bottom) the airflow is controlled by the most closed of the two. Since the top one closes enough to kill the fire, any small leaks in the bottom one don't really matter. So I think the air-leak problem is in the past, the manufacturer really stepped up and addressed the issue. They are listening!

The grill I got should have been black, but instead it has a nice hammered two-tone finish. It is black on grey for the main shell, and black for the legs. It looks like a nice finish that should hold up well.

My goal is to learn to properly regulate the temperature, for low-slow cooking. One thing I learned is that even at a low temperature, the radiant heat from the fire will tend to overcook anything that gets direct heat if you are doing a long cook, so the first accessory that is a must have is some kind of heat deflector, such as a pizza stone. I used a sheet of foil with a drip pan on top, that worked too.

As for temperature regulation, learning that will require some patience and understanding. In a test cook, I was trying to get a temp in the 225 range. It turns out the vent setting for that temp is around .5 to .75 on the upper vent. Not knowing that in advance, I started on a setting of 2... The fire quickly started getting really hot, so I turned the vent down to 1, and waited a half hour. The temp was still high. So I turned it down to .5, and waited another half hour... it dropped to 350. So I set the vent lower, barely cracked... Half an hour later, it was at 300. The vent was almost closed so I decided to wait a bit longer to see if it cooled more... half an hour later it was at 275, so I decided to go ahead and put the meat on (a pork rump). I figured it would keep slowly dropping. What I didn't know was that the fire was out, it was the insulation that was holding the heat in. So my first lesson on what not to do... Head the warnings about starting low, once the temperature is too high, it is difficult to get it back down without extinguishing the fire and starting over.

One of the tricks is not to have too much fire to begin with. Make a pyramid of cold charcoal lumps, and only light a small section of the coals. For a low-slow cook, you will want the fire to slowly burn across your fuel load, so lighting one edge of the stack is better than dumping a load of pre-lit coals in. If you start with a full fire, you will never get the low temperature right. A good stack lit from one edge will give the fire an order with which to burn in, so that you don't go cold with unused fuel. Since most of the fuel is cold to start with, making sure it is all in a tight pile will insure the fire eventually is able to consume all of the coals.

The idea of using a propane torch to light the stack in one spot is a good way to go, thanks to the reviewer who suggested that. A propane torch on a hose is best for that, so you don't hold the bottle upside down.

Since your fire will be burning from one edge of your pile to the other, having a heat deflector will prevent the uneven heat from causing a problem. The fire will gradually move across the pile, and a deflector will keep the heat even regardless of where the fire is.

I found that I was able to hold a low-slow temp quite well, but it would change temperature slightly so I was tweaking the top vent every hour or so. I think my next project is to make a thermostat, and figure out a way to motorize the damper.

But so much for my learning to control the fire. I still have more to learn obviously.

I also tried some ribs, both pork and beef. The pork ribs were good, the beef ribs were excellent.

As soon as I get my pizza stone, I will do a brisket.

After a couple of meals featuring too much meat, I did a cook with a load of veggies, potatoes, corn on the cob, mushrooms, assorted peppers, and cherry tomatoes... It all came out very good, but veggies are easy and don't take long to get right.

The grill is well made, and the parts all fit as they should. The only problem I had during assembly was trying to use a wrench on the hex bolts. The bolts are chamfered, and so are my wrenches. well before the bolts are starting to get tight, the wrench looses the ability to turn them because of the chamfer causing them to just slip past each other. They are slotted for a Phillips screw driver, and as it turns out my big #3 driver could put more than enough torque on them, so I was happy once I put the wrench away. The chamfered bolt heads are actually nice in that they make a smoother surface... Just don't use a wrench.

My old stainless grill had bad rust problems. Turns out that there were places for water to collect inside of non-stainless parts. In particular the legs. I was happy to see that on this grill, two of the legs are not closed at the bottom, so no place for water to collect. The back leg with the caster-wheel looks closed at the bottom, so at some point I'll pull the caster off, and drill a small hole for water to drain out from. Older cars had this problem, rusting out from the inside... Car makers learned that lesson a few years back, and started putting drain holes in places water can collect, and as a result cars stopped rusting out from the inside (as long as some idiot didn't cover the drain holes with undercoating. The only other potential water collection point is the ash pan. I don't think I want a drain hole, so instead I may store the bottom inside the grill upside down... I'll be thinking about that for a while.

I did buy a cover from Walmart that fits really good, for under $6. It should last at least 6 months while I find a better one...

In summary, I really like this grill. The price is right compared to something like a Green Egg, I just need to keep on-top of the potential for rust, and if I can do that it will last a long time.

EDIT- The ash pan is a big water collector. Because it is insulated, there are two steel walls in the ash pan, and both collect water. A very small hole through both should fix it, at the cost of a small air leak (should be ok if the hole is small enough).

Also I have added a fan from Auber instruments (6.5cfm I think) that can be connected to any common PID. The fan fits perfectly without any adapters, and does an excellent job controlling the temperature. I can get 30+ hours of cook time from a single load of lump charcoal when I cook at a low temperature (like around 220f). Once I can control the temperature accurately, I get flawless fall-apart brisket every time!

Honest reviews on Char-Griller Kamado Kooker Charcoal Barbecue Grill and Smoker

I just bought one of these few days ago after shopping around for a kamado a long time.

Reason why i bought it was my old weber needed replacement and my neighbor recommended me a kamado type grill. They have the advanage to keep the temperature better than gas and weber grills. This one was far cheaper than the famous bands therefore I decided to give it a try, paid 299 USD.Assembly was pretty easy, it took approx one hour plus one hour 'burn in time'. I made sure to tighten all the screws well, construction actually seems pretty sturdy . So far I cooked with it two times , here is my comments:

Pros:

Price is very competitive, 299 USD vs 800+ USD for a 'famous brand' kamado .

Size, it is actually bigger than the competing "L size" kamados. Its 19 inch grid can fit three whole chickens easily.

Performance, seems to be good, for me it held low temperature 250F very well,I cooked ribs for 5 hours at 250F stable, impressing because it was cold, windy and rainy outside that day.I used hickory wood to smoke and saw no leaks in the construction.Controling temperature is very easy and the grill stays cool on the outside. After 5 hours of grillingi found it had used up surprisingly little coal!!

Note:I have not tried high temperature cooking yet, this bbq can be heated up to 700F to make pizza etc.

Construction, very impressive considering the price. It is made out of metal with ceramic interior, well insulated. This grill much lighter than he ceramic kamados.

I can recommend to buy few extras to set it up for smoking, I invested in a 17 inch weber grid plus a cast iron dripping pan , set me back additionally 30USD. The cover costs 24 USD.

Cons:

I found the thermometer is not accurate, way off actually.. It shows 250F when actual temp was 280F. But it is not a big issue in practice.

This is a steel construction and it will probably not last forever,The more expensive ceramic kamados probably will last longer, if not forever.

For the most part, this grill is awesome... But it's incomplete. Here's what else you'll need:

1) In order to produce great BBQ you've got to be on top of your temperature (grill temp & internal temp of the meat). The temperature gage on the grill is TERRIBLE to the point of being virtually useless so you'll need a good thermometer. I bought the Maverick ET732 here on Amazon and it is awesome.

2) These types of grills use LUMP charcoal and you NEVER want to use lighter fluid to start them so you'll also need a chimney starter. I got the Webber Chimney Starter here on Amazon too. (you will only need two sheets of newspapers to get your coals red hot)

3) The grill doesn't come with a cover so you'll need that too.

4) If you would like to do indirect grilling (ie: ribs, pork shoulder, Boston butt, etc), you will need a smoking stone. You can also get that here.

Once you have everything you need, start out by breaking the grill in. Wash the cast iron grate, completely coat it with Crisco then run the grill for an hour on at least 400 degrees. Then you're ready to rock and roll.

Why I love this grill:

1) It's sturdy

2) It's well insulated. If you touch the outside while it's cooking, it's warm but not hot. So kids or animals won't burn themselves by touching it.

3) It's MUCH less expensive than its ceramic counterparts.

4) You don't have to worry about it cracking after being tipped over or by grilling in freezing weather.

5) The coals are so far from the grate that you never get flare ups.

I use it MUCH more than my gas grill.

ONE THING TO NOTE: This grill heats up VERY FAST and does a great job of retaining the heat. Therefore, if you want to grill at 225 (pulled pork) or 350 (baked chicken), start out with your vents slightly open and slowly eek your way up to the desired temperature. If you overshoot, it's tough to get back down to the desired temp.

I had a Bayou Classic propane burner bookmarked here for over a year before I finally decided to purchase, and at the last minute I switched over to this Brinkmann burner. What few reviews there were were positive, and the extra features looked worthwhile, for the same price. By contrast, I'd been seeing several negative reviews about the Bayou Classic burner.

When it arrived, there was some assembly required. When I say that, I mean the kind of "some assembly required" that parents dread on the night before Christmas. It was in tiny pieces that needed to be assembled. No problem, I'm a handy guy. After 30 minutes, it was all together, although I noticed that some of the pre-drilled holes didn't exactly match the threads on the screws and needed some force to get tightened. That was my first indication of this product's quality. Time to fire it up.

I bought the unit for brewing beer, not for frying turkeys, which is a good thing because the manual prominently states that this unit is NOT for frying turkeys. Interesting, since the Amazon description definitely calls it a turkey fryer. But no problem, this is for brewing beer. Up until now, I'd been brewing on the stove top and this was my first outdoor burner with enough power to heat the batch up in a reasonable time. If I'd had more experience with these types of units, I would have noticed that the fact that the flame was totally yellow no matter what the airflow setting was at was not a good thing. My beautiful stainless steel pots ended up covered up with a layer of black soot that got everywhere and took forever to scrub off. I was pretty disappointed, and spent some time researching the problem on the Internet before I realized that the yellow flames were a sign of a bad air/propane mix. No amount of adjusting the air intake vents would reduce the bonfire-like yellow flames.

I called the customer support number only to find that they answer the phone between 8 and 5 in the Central Time Zone, Monday through Friday. I had to wait until during the week in order to get some help. When I took time from work to call their customer support number, I found that their customer support number consisted of an answering machine, where you leave your name and number, and they'll call back when they can. Like they couldn't leave the answering machine on during the weekends? Customer support called me back 4 hours later and a bored-sounding guy told me to check the air hose for leaks with soapy water and call him back. I told him it was brand new, but he wouldn't help me until I put soapy water on the hose to check it for leaks. I called back later in the week and told him there were no leaks in the hose and he said I should send an email to their customer support center with a copy of my receipt and request a new regulator assembly. I did, and after a week and a half of no response, I called and left another message on the answering machine. I didn't get a callback that day, but the next day I got an email that my part had been shipped. Five days later, I got the replacement regulator. I connected it, fired it up, big yellow flames. I connected the new regulator to a friend's burner and it produced the desired blue flames. I tried sending another email to the email address, but it bounced back as undeliverable. Another round with the answering machine. The bored-sounding guy called me back and told me that I needed to take a coat hanger and clean out the burner assembly because it might be clogged. I repeated that it did this right out of the box and it never worked.

Finally he said he'd send a replacement burner. The only thing is the part is backordered and they don't know when they'll get one.

As I write this, it is almost February. I first received this unit last October. I have never been able to use it, and the bored-sounding guy already informed me that there was no hope of them just sending me a replacement unit. As of the time of this writing, I still have not received a working part.

If I could do it all over again, I would not have purchased this unit.

Update: March 6, 2013. Not a peep from the company. I still don't have a burner that works.

Update: April 16, 2013. I finally called the company again. Got a call back the next day. They say the part is still on order and they should have some in stock by the end of the month. They say they don't carry this type of burner any more. I still don't have a burner that works.

Update: August, 2013. Received the replacement part in the mail. Installed it and it works like it was supposed to. My overall experience with the product and the company are so negative that I will strongly recommend against purchasing this product and other products that the Brinkmann makes.

I purchased this burner and got the next day $3.99 shipping through prime so I could brew a batch quickly...not disappointed at all!

The assembly was easy and quick. It is sturdy and man...does it kick out some heat. I didn't need to push it all the way for my purposes. I used about 1/2 power and had 8 gallons of hose water boiling in 24 minutes! That was with a lid on.

When it came time to boil my wort, it worked great. I didn't time it, but it was quickly up to boiling, and I had about 7.5 gallons going. It could easily handle more, I just don't have a pot big enough to test it.

The great part is that there is room to grow with this burner. I have a 9 gallon pot that is pretty wide, and I have the adjustable base set to the narrowest setting. I could get a 15 to 20 gallon pot on top of this burner very safely. It is rock solid and can handle a lot of weight.

The wind baffles work well, too. It was a relatively windy day, and I was able to adjust the baffles with tilt to keep the wind from affecting the flame too much.

I can't tell how much propane it is using up yet, as I have only one batch under my belt, but my calculations tell me that at 105,000 BTU, you will burn through a standard 20 lb. propane tank in 4 hours. As I said, I was probably going half power on the first batch, since I was getting used to the burner...so I plan on 6 to 8 hours of burn time per tank. Time will tell. This should be plenty for a couple of batches, so I am planning on spending about 10 dollars on propane per batch.

I would highly recommend this burner...no complaints whatsoever.

I brew beer and since my electric stove was sorely lacking in power, I purchased this cooker. I'm glad to say that I am VERY happy with my purchase! I broke it in with 5 gallons of water in an uncovered 40 quart heavy aluminum stock pot and it brought the temperature from 72F to boiling in only 19 minutes with the convection zone in the center of the pot, demonstrating an even heating from the burner. This was only at about 75% of maximum power since I didn't want to push it too hard out of the box, but I did turn it all the way up for the last minute or so and I can attest that this cooker can get frighteningly (but safely) hot. The ample heat shielding under the burner and the raised platform ensured there was little risk of damaging my deck while it was on, though it didn't hurt to have large a stone paver underneath it to be sure.

It's well packed, putting it together is pretty simple and the instructions are reasonably clear. A regular size Phillips head screwdriver and a small adjustable wrench to attach the burner to the frame are the only tools required. Construction only took about 20 minutes from start to finish using an electric screwdriver and socket wrench and I thankfully didn't need to make any interpretations as far as the instructions were concerned.

Before using it to make anything, however, I would suggest doing a "break in" run with a large pot of water as I did since the paint will burn off from the cast-iron spiders under the pot and the 3 clamps along the sides. Any brand or model cooker will do this, so that statement is in no way a reflection of this unit's quality.

Overall I am very pleased with the quality of this product, its insane BTU output and ease of construction at a price I couldn't touch anywhere else. If you are looking for an outdoor propane cooker for brewing, large shellfish boils or any other application, I can assure you will be as thrilled as I am with this product.

Honest reviews on Brinkmann 815-4005-S Outdoor Cooker Stand

I have not used the burner yet. I hope it works for Turkey frying as that is what I bought it for. However, the box it comes in has a large red warning across it "this appliance is not for frying turkeys" and the instructions warn it is not for turkey frying and not to use more than 10qts of oil for frying. This warning is counter to the advertisement about frying and I don't know if it is true or just an attempt to avoid liability for turkey frying fires but whichever it is, you've been warned.

UPDATE: I deep fried a turkey and the burner worked Great. Now, I am not suggesting you use this burner to deep fry a turkey. However, I used it to deep fry a 24 pound turkey on a cold day with over 4 gallons of oil and it brought the oil up to temperature fast and the controls were precise enough that I turned the flame down and it maintained the temperature with ease and much better than the burner I replaced.

I moved me review from 2 stars to 3. 3 Because it does work great as for turkey frying but not 4 or 5 because the warning is clear, don't fry a turkey.

We bought this to host a fish fry for Labor Day at our house because frying inside sucks (whole house smells like grease for a week). Four legs are stable. Cooking surface worked great with my stainless 16qt stock pot. heat control is pretty darn good. Lighting is easy... cooking is easy... the little arms that keep the pot from sliding off are a nice touch.

1 star off because of the cheesy mounts for the heat shields. They mount with a single hole, so they are free to shift and spin. If they fall off, I will just buy a small bolt/but and locktite them on. 2 mounting points for the shields woudl have been better, but that is not a real complaint.

For the money I spent on it, she will serve our fish frying and crayfish boiling needs very well!

I gave this to my grandaughter for her 5th birthday. She loved it and was especially excited with the hot dogs, buns, and pizza that come with it. The only negative is the center of the benches are very weak, so if no adults sit on them, it gets 5 stars!

Having little ones between the ages of 9 months to 5 years it is often difficult to find something they all have an interest in. This works well for them. It is the right height for all of them to set at comfortably. They love the "food" I love the oven because it doubles as storage for the bits and pieces. The only complaint would be the grill. Batteries need to be replaced often and it really isn't much more than a fancy spinning light. The little ones don't seem to have much interest in it either. I do wish extra bench's were available for purchase separately. Over all for children under 5 this is an excellent toy.

This is a cute set, but a little smaller than I thought it would be. My 21 month old son loves it and it is a great alternative to a girls kitchen set for a boy. He loves the food that came with it and trys to grill it just like Dad grills. It was easy to put together and seems to be sturdy enough to handle an active toddler!!!

Honest reviews on Little Tikes Campsite Cookout

I was excited to get this for my LO first birthday. However after putting it together (which was fairly easy) I was completely bummed. To start, the benches are extremely short. The grill makes sizzling sounds but the knob to make it work does not seem durable, if my son twists it hard enough it feels as though it will break. The "pizza" that comes with it looks nice, however the slices are SO small he can't fit a whole piece in this mouth. The top does not "stay" on and moves if you hardly touch the table. The tongs that came with it do not open unless you pull it and then you have to clamp it together to pick up anything, this was frustrating to both him and I. I had hoped they worked like "tongs" to teach him the concept. It is an understatement to say that I am disappointed with this product from little tikes.

**WARNING EXTREMELY DANGEROUS**

I really do have to put a huge warning on the "Match Light" charcoal. It is very dangerous. As it says, it is match light. There is no need for lighter fluid. It does work great. And stay hot longer than the normal ccharcoal. You don't taste the fluid when the food is cooked because it burns off before it reaches the food. As all of us know that when we add fluid, we do put more on the coals when the food is grilling. That's when we taste it in the food. You don't need any at any time when using this. But now the dangerous part of this, is that it's very flammable. When you cook with charcoal, you have to add more coal every hour to have a steady temperature. I did this by pouring more on like you would normally. The coals inside the bag caught fire. They started to catch fire quite quickly. I had to fold the top of the bag to put the fire out. After that I had to replenish the fire. So I didn't pour it on again. I grabbed the coals with my hand; my hand caught fire. I didn't get burned because I always keep a hose within reach. I can't say enough to be careful. So if you do need to add more. Get a small bag of the "Match Light" and just place the bag on the fire or use a pot and place the coals into the pot and pour it on. Step back right away after that. Never let children handle this. Like I said, my hand caught fire. If you have the coal dust on your hands, there's a good chance your hand will catch fire. This is a great product and works great but just be careful.

This charcoal was nice and easy to use. I used it for my first time grilling on my own, and I didn't have any trouble at all. I'll probably buy this again the next time I need charcoal.

I have not used Kingsford Match Light Charcoal Briquettes in ages. For the last 5 years I have had a gas grill.

I picked up a little charcoal grill here on amazon and grilled some steaks. Such a different flavor. Took more time but gives me options. The Kingsford Match Light Charcoal Briquettes lit up quickly which helped in getting dinner on the table on time.

Picked this up from a local store for quite a bit cheaper than Amazon but it works well, lights easily and stays lit while the bricks warm up. Definitely recommend this charcoal

As of today, this item title states "Kingsford 71700 7.2 Pound Kingsford Match Light Charcoal Briquettes" for $7.99 + $6.79 shipping. However, the photo is of the regular briquettes, the white & blue bag with red & yellow highlights, and the packaging states "The Original". When I asked for "Match Light", it gave me the black bag with red on the bottom third, with the 6.70 pound bag for $9.15 + $7.29 shipping, and "Match Light" clearly on the front of the bag. (This is not a review, we all know they work great)
