I have been using this for years. It is a different experience if you are used to briquettes. The lump will pop and crackle, sometimes violently. The key to lump cooking is that you DO NOT wait for it to ash over like briquettes. This lump is excellent for searing steaks at 700 F +, and also does very well on my low and slow 18 hour brisket smokes.Best Deals for Bayou Classic 18-Pound Bag Natural Lump Charcoal
While it starts instantly (and burns rather violently for 10 or so minutes) in the chimney starter, by the time it's ready to be put in the grill a full 50% has burned away as a pile of ash under the chimney. Will not use again.
