I purchased this wood chip box locally at a big box hardware store for about $12 plus tax for my new propane smoker. It is too small, holding only 100 grams (dry) of hickory chips which were soaked in water. With box directly above burner it took 12 minutes (350 F air temp inside smoker) for the first smoke to show and an addition 2 minutes (14 minutes) to get good steady smoke which lasted only 14 minutes. 28 minutes for 14 minutes of smoke!
Preheating cast iron box for 10 minutes, then put in soaked wood chips. Smoke started at 6 minutes, with steady smoke at 9 minutes which lasted 16 minutes. Still not enough for a deep smokey taste.
If you want just a lite smoke taste, this chip box might work for you; but for those like me that like a hearty smokey taste it falls far short.
If a lite smoke taste is all you want, save your money...use heavy duty aluminum foil, place soaked wood chips in the middle and make a sealed pouch. Then poke a few small holes on one side with a toothpick, skewer or fork. Put on grill to get a smokey taste with almost no cost! I have used this method and it heats up quickly and smokes for around 10 to 15 minutes depending on the amount of wood chips and species of wood.
