I did a center cut pork roast the other day by placing the plate deflector upside down beneath the grate, placing a drip pan on the plate deflector and slow cooking roast for a few hours--terrif, moist, flavorful. I also smoked a red snapper--great appetizer with horseradish sauce. A duck is coming soon.
In short, the plate deflector is a great tool, transforming your BBQ grill most effectively into a ceramic pot and smoker, which permits a greatly expanded range of flavorful cooking. Useless on gas grills, by the way, which are just bad stoves used outside.
As for pricing, I found a local store that carried the plate deflector plus all sorts of other clay pot bbq stuff below online msrp prices and without shipping charges. Might pay to poke around the nabe....
