I received this Grillgrate three panel kit about a month ago and, due to the lousy weather here in upstate NY, I have only used it about five times. It is everything Meathead (Amazingribs.com) said it would be and then some, great sear on meat, easy to clean, gives cooking temperatures approaching restaurant grills. The only thing I would mention, not a complaint, more of a caution, these puppies get HOT, way too hot to handle unless you have welding mitts! Unfortunately that's the best time to clean them, the residue wipes off easily with a grill brush but collects in the channels between the grill bars, instructions say this is ok to leave since it never touches the food and actually enhances the flavor of the meat, but I didn't like the rancid smell after not using the grill for a couple of days. I reached a happy medium by letting the grill cool for about five minutes and then cleaning it wearing a pair of heavy leather fireplace gloves (have some great sear marks on them now!) I did one panel at a time holding it on end and brushing everything into a metal pan. I still gave the Grillgrates a 5 because the performance more than out weighs the cleaning problem, best grill additions I've come across so far.

Works good prevents flare ups, gives meat good sear marks. The panels come apart easily. 2 can be used on a 18.5in. grill, 3 can be used on a 22.5in. grill. Can be used on propane grills also.

Getting a perfectly seared steak like you get in a steak house on your grill is hard to do. Rarely can you get the coals hot enough for a perfect sear. With the grill grates, this is a simple and easy thing to do. The grates get upwards in the 700 degree range and you get a nice crusty sear every time. Perfect grill marks are another plus. Flareups with the grill grates are a thing of the past. I get great tasting burgers and no more flareups. I would recommend this item to anyone who likes their steaks & burgers with a tasty char & sear.

I can't believe this is not the standard equipment on Weber grills. It should be. I have been using this everyday for more about a month and this is what I have found:

Pros:

1. Grill marks It makes a nicely defined grill marks everytime. Since the rails are flat on top, it makes a very uniform and thick grill line. Absolutely beautiful.

2. No charring Since this sits between the intense flame and the steak, it does not cause any charring. Nice even finish to the steak.

3. Verstatility I have used this for indirect cooking as well. I move the charcoal baskets to the sides and I use one Grillgrate over each basket. I then sear the thick steaks, over 1 inch, on the Grillgrate. I sear it for 5 minutes, then lift the steak and put in the middle of the grill, to indirectly cook it for a few more minutes. I use the indirect cooking time to set the doneness individually depending on the requests of the people I am cooking for.

4. Healthier Since the Steaks are not exposed to direct flame and charring, it prevents the unhealthy part of grilling.

5. Speed You will have to adjust your cooking times because this makes cooking quicker by about 10-20%.

6. Durability These things are virtually indestructable.

7. Grill tool The grill tool that comes win the kit is very usefull in flipping the steaks or burgers and taking it off and putting it on your plate. Very functional indeed.

Cons:

1. Cleaning Although the instructions say just to brush the rails and leave the grooves alone, to remove large chunks from the grooves, you will need to buy a small brass grill brush to get in the middle. it just adds a minute to your prep time, but it is no big deal.

Conclusion:

I used this on my Weber Kettle and it is now indispensable. Never waste or burn your steaks again! Happy grilling!
