I looked at a lot of different thermometers before settling on this one, and I can't recommend it enough. It's perfect for outdoor work, given the light-up display and the rugged casing. Temperature readings are fast and accurate. Just be sure to handle it with care the tip is very sharp.
I have a standard indoor Taylor LCD thermometer as well but I like this one even better. Avoid the gimmicks; this thermometer is designed to do what it does very well and is relatively inexpensive. You can't go wrong.

I set up a water bath using my glass photo darkroom thermometer (color printing requires accurate temperature) and it read as close as I could expect right out of the box, less than .4 degree F error. The probe tip narrows at the end (cannot see this from the picture), and the resulting thermal mass is low enough to measure one burger or one link sausage accurately. The only down side is that it is short, on a big grill you would need to move the food closer to the edge to avoid burning yourself or the thermometer. Sticking on the handle makes it longer, but it does not attach well enough to be reliable as a handle.Best Deals for Taylor 806E4L Weekend Warrior Waterproof Digital Thermometer
When this thermometer arrived it worked perfectly out of the box. The controls and display are easy and clear. It takes a minute or two for the temperature to read properly, but you can see the temperature readout changing real time after inserting the tip until it stops going up so the wait isn't bad. If it worked every time I try to use it I'd think it was great. My problem with the item is that it seems to be poorly made. The first one I received stopped working less than a week after it arrived. It began turning itself off after a few seconds or the backlight would light up and everything would freeze for a while. After a few more tries it stopped working altogether and would not turn on.
My review of the thermometer is poor, but the Amazon customer service was fantastic. I contacted them via internet and they offered to either replace it or refund my money. I asked for a replacement, and they overnight mailed it to me that same day and sent a label for me to return the defective thermometer.
The second one worked fine for a couple of months, then started to have similar problems-it would sometimes just go dead and not work. It has been almost a year and it still usually works, but you have to squeeze the base very tightly the entire time or some electronic contact is lost and the thing goes dead.
I probably only use it a couple of times a month and have never immersed it in water, dropped it, or otherwise mistreated it. It may be that we were just unlucky, but based on our experience I suggest you buy something less likely to break within the first few weeks.
