Got three of these heat plates to replace busted ceramic title flare-up plates in my gas grill. Perfect fit and although I've had a few flare-ups the heat plates have survived without a problem. They do come covered in machine oil so a little cleanup is required before placing them into the grill. These 3 steel plates replace the 6 ceramic plates on the Members Mark Grills. They heat up faster and seem to disperse heat better than the ceramic IMHO. The ceramic plates always seems to break quickly, these seem like they will last more than a season.

For my grill the easiest way to control the heat (225F for long smokes) is to limit the fuel. I have a full size chimney and found myself only filling it to 1/3 full (33 Kingsford Original briquettes). I decided I wanted half that and found that so few briquettes didn't catch on fire as well. I use the Minion method of using the lit coals to light unlit coals over time. So, the question is does this smaller compact chimney starter work for 15-20 briquettes?

Here are the numbers: The full size chimney starter is 12 inches high, 7.5 inches in diameter. The cavity is 9 inches deep. There is an internal grate that provides air space under the charcoal. It's conical in shape but I'm ignoring that; I don't think it makes much difference. Total volume is 397.6 cubic inches (or 6.5 liters).

The compact chimney starter is 8 inches high, 5.75 inches in diameter. The cavity is 6.25 inches deep. The total volume is 162 cubic inches (or 2.6 liters).

1 full compact chimney starter fills the full chimney starter to 1/3 (33 briquettes as it happens). This is going to be perfect for me. With my usual load of 15 briquettes they didn't even cover the whole bottom of the full sized starter.

I made this measurement because briquettes aren't fluid and don't flow to fill all available space. I was concerned that the briquettes would not pack as well into a smaller volume.

There is some discussion of the compact chimney starter not firing up coals as well. The volume beneath the coal grate that allows air in is smaller than the volume beneath the full size chimney starter. That's obvious. I just lit a 15 briquette load. Fifteen minutes, same as the larger starter. The charcoal in the compact starter is more uniform gray and better started. I think this is because a small load stacks better in the compact starter and you get more of the chimney effect. In the larger starter, they don't even cover the bottom. Since I don't intend to light more than about 33 briquettes I'm better off with the compact starter.

If you need 50 or more briquetts to get your grill going the compact chimney starter is too small for you. If you are invested in the Minion method or in using a charcoal fuse or snake (look it up) then the compact chimney starter might be just what you need.

I frequently just need enough coals to place under and above a 10" Dutch oven. This smaller starter holds all I need and takes less space while traveling than my full sized Weber starter.

I usually don't need to light 5 pounds of charcoal, which is what the regular size charcoal chimney holds (12 inches tall and 7.5 inch diameter). This one is 8 inches tall with 5.75 inch diameter and will hold a bit over a pound of lump charcoal. So it much easier to start the small amount appropriate for cooking indirect on a Weber CharQ or for a low and slow fire in a ceramic cooker.

I previously had a Weber 7416 Rapidfire Chimney Starter but since downsizing my grilling operations to a Smokey Joe thought this was a better fit. And it is a good fit in terms of charcoal amount for a small grill like the Smokey Joe but it really doesn't work as well as the larger size. Almost always need 2 newspaper sheets (one after the other) whereas on the larger unit one sheet was usually sufficient.

The grids are model (MCM 548S1) 1/4 " rodded, not the MCM 550S1 that are made using 5/16 " rods. I was hoping for a great bargin, but reality came after opening

the box.

They are well made and are of solid high polished stainless. You'll have to cut one corner (the left one) to get it to fit some DCS grills (Mine is a 36" model'er).

Done easily in a few seconds with a cutting wheel on a grinder. Other than the cutout being on the wrong side, the fit is very good.

As these are 1/4 inch rod, there is wider spacing between each rod allowing smaller pieces of food to get stuck in or fall in the gaps. Not a deal breaker for me, just lay the food at 45 degree angle to the grid, problem gone.

These grids do heat up little quicker, because of the smaller size rod, so you'll get nice marks on your food a little quicker.

The welding is top notch making the grids sturdy. The only thing I would wish for is to know which Stainless is used for these grids, (Stainless Steel Material is too

broad). Some sites selling these state 304SS, others simply state SS. The MCM site states SS material.

If you want the original rod sized grids, it'll set you back another $50 per section and its the model 550S1, found elsewhere, and they're construction looks to be more like the original DCS grids that are on my 10 year old grill.

All in all, for the money, I like these, they should do a fine job of giving nice grid marks while holding the meat off the radiants and should not rust while doing it, I hope for many years.

I purchased these to replace the OE stainless heat plates in my Home Depot/Ducane 3 burner + side burner unit. When I first put them in [done by lifting the grate off first] they did not line up with the groves in the BBQ framework. I assumed that was what some other reviewers referred to. But a light bulb went on and I rotated them 180 degrees [half circle for the geometrically challenged] and all the slots lined up. The black porcelain gives more even heat distribution then the original stainless plates. My BBQ cooks better than when new. My wife was pushing for a new BBQ but now she is happy. I have been using these for about 2 months and am still happy with my economical fix for my propane fired grill.

I looked for quite some time trying to find a rib rack for our smoker. Its an old Oklahoma Joes we bought 15 years ago. This is one of the few racks that hold the ribs parallel to the cooking area instead of across it so I didn't have to cut the ribs in half and could still shut the lid. It's nice and heavy construction too. It's a bit crowded with 4 racks on it though, so it doesn't get an even smoking unless you re-arrange the ribs. I would have preferred it to be an inch taller to hold the ribs more upright, they tried to flop against each other, and we used it for baby backs. Just a few changes would have made it perfect but even so this is the best rack I have found for the smaller barrel style smokers.

I purchased this for large BBQs to avoid transferring multiple racks at a time. The unit is sturdy and holds up to 4 racks of ribs. It's so much easier to lift all racks at the same time because of the handles on both sides of the rack. I did have two issues with the rack:1)Taking baby back ribs in and out of it can be difficult because of their curvy nature. If you only BBQ spareribs, then there will be no issues at all. 2) My method of cooking ribs involves a low smoking cook method. Because the ribs cook at a different angle, they don't come out as moist as when they cook bone-side down. Overall, I would recommend this, especially if you're BBQing for a large crowd.

Since this is a replacement part, if this didn't do what it was supposed to do, then it would simply be the wrong part, and get zero stars. This is a product that can only get a pass/fail grade.

So instead of reviewing the obvious, this is what I found in shopping for the replacement part.

if you want to buy this in person, good luck. Barbeques Galore of all places (that sells this grill) told me I would have to order from Weber direct as they can't even order it. Hardware stores carry this grill, but if you just need the grates, you'll need to buy the whole grill too.

Amazon beats Weber direct by $5, and Weber will charge you shipping at a minimum of $7 for ground. If you buy from Amazon, you have Weber beat by at least $12, if you choose super saver shipping (as this automatically qualifies for).

In summary, Amazon is the place to buy this replacement part. You'll just waste your time, and gas (thus more money) if shopping locally, looking for this.

I have had rust issues as well. I ended with some Lodge cast iron pans, and noticed the care instructions. I started applying the same instructions to this grill grate, and the rust issues went a way. Scrub , clean, and apply light oil. See Lodge cleaning instructions below. Good luck!!

I had the original grate for about 2 years until it started rusting. I kept the grill on a covered porch year round without a cover while living in South Florida. When I moved to North Georgia I noticed the grate was rusting. At one point it was so bad I couldn't use the grill at all. I ordered this OEM grate along with a Q300 grill cover to prevent the new one from rusting. Not 3 months into using it and the new grill grate is rusting! I use the grill maybe once a week 3-4 times a month. I keep it clean and covered. I've even started running the burners after rains just to keep the grill grate dry. Nothing seems to make a difference. It's as if the enamel is just flacking off in spots. I'm using a brass brush as recommended with enameled grill tops and I don't apply heavy pressure. At this rate I'll be replacing this every year! At $60+ each thats adding up to a lot of money and It may be a better idea to get a different grill altogether. I really love my Weber Q300, but this is getting ridiculous.

I'm so happy I found these replacement grates. I learned a BIG lesson not to use the metal brushes on theses grates. Just heat the grates and a nylon brush with a bowl of plain water and the grates become clean. So simple.
