Haven't tried the cheaper guages that stick to outside of tank so can't comment on how well they work, though they are less expensive.

This item is one of the handiest gadgets that I ever acquired. It easily attaches to the existing plumbing between the propane tank of a standard barbeque grill and its heating element. I never ran out of fuel while cooking with this item servicing to my grill. I refuel my propane tank several times a year. This handy guage does not encumber the refueling process in any way. It has proven to be durable and resistent to all weather year-around.I forgot to write a review for the item when purchased, but was recently prompted by Amazon to do so. I highly recommend it.
