I bought this to measure dome temp in my Weber 22.5" kettle. The hole size was in between two of my drill bits, (I THINK it was larger than 3/8" but smaller than 1/2", so, probably 7/16", which I didn't have...), but using the smaller drill bit and reaming out the hole a bit worked well. It mounts securely, and looks very nice against the black grill dome. The numbers are easy to read, and it responds quickly.
The packaging is obviously pandering to the Tim The Grill Man Taylor crowd, plastered with MAN LAWS and other nonsense without telling you anything about the actual thermometer or how to mount it. It seems to have a calibration screw in the shaft, but I was hesitant to test that theory as I didn't know what it is and didn't want to break it. It seems to read temps just fine, as is, though, so I'm not worried.
The glow in the dark labeling is honestly pretty useless....it's VERY dim after the lights go out, but who grills in the dark anyway? The green color looks nifty, at least.
5 stars because it works like it should. -1 imaginary star for stupid packaging, but that doesn't affect the function of the product :-).

I bought 3 of these for my offset charcoal smoker. While they are a heck of a lot more accurate than the gauge that came on the smoker, they are not quite as good as a digital one. However, they do give me a good idea of where my temperatures are across the whole smoking surface which is what i was looking for. Plus, i can see them at night pretty good which is nice for those all night pork shoulder or brisket smokes.

I bought 2 of these to use on each end of my offset smoker and they both register within a couple degrees of one another, which means 2 things, I set up my smoker properly, and these thermometers are working! I calibrated them using the boiling water method and a flat head screwdriver. It's harder than you'd think because boiling water is, well, hot! These were only a few degrees off from the factory. So most people probably won't care anyway. It would serve the manufacturer well to put instructions how to calibrate these either on their web site or on the product packaging so people wouldn't leave reviews saying the temps were off...

I built a small smoker, and these seemed like a good value. I bought two of these as well as a maverick dual probe model. I tested them on freezing and boiling water and they were pretty close, but when I installed them in the smoker, I feel like they always read a bit low. Once the temp gets above 200 F these consistently read 30 to 50 degrees below my maverick. The further you are above 150 the further apart the readings get. They are cheap, they look great, but I can't say that I would trust them in a pinch, especially when 10 degrees can make the difference between great BBQ and average BBQ.

The thermometer was accurate when tested in boiling water but the problem I had is something that would be common with any thermometer like this one. The temperature where it reads is not the temperature where it cooks and often it would read 75-100 degrees cooler. May not be a big deal depending on the type of cooking you are doing but it is very problematic when smoking and I have since gotten a digital thermometer with a probe that clips on the cooking surface.
