The unit I received apparently had defective magnets, as it wouldn't stick to anything -propane cylinders, refrigerator, freezer, my truck, etc. Maybe I just got a bad unit, but the one I got definitely did not work as advertised.

UPDATED: A gentleman from the manufacturer contacted me shortly after I posted my initial review and has been exceedingly polite and helpful. He is sending me another unit to try, free of charge. Based on customer service alone, I have upgraded this review from 1-star to 3-stars, and am looking forward to testing out the replacement unit when it arrives.

SECOND UPDATE: The second unit arrived promptly, and upon testing seems to be working flawlessly. And once again, I can't stress the superior customer service that I received from the manufacturer after the first unit failed to work as advertised. They acted promptly and courteously, and definitely made me a satisfied customer. I generally have at least two propane tanks around the house, and fully intend on buying another Gas Genie to use on my backup tank.

Installed this last week and grilled this weekend. Simple to install and it does the job! Played the tone, and I knew I had enough time to finish those steaks! I think this product is superior to the classical pressure monitors, as outside weather temp affects the pressure greatly. So you could easily have a pressure monitor in the green, and then the next minute it drops to red and your out.The Genie measures temp of the gas. It detects minute changes and notifies you in plenty of time.

If you have looked for this type of product, you know they are not all that easy to find. I was delighted when I found Amazon offering this one.I have used it for a few weeks now, and I am confident that it does the job.

Here is what you need to know:

1. the gauge needs to sit as low as possible on your tank. My tank sits in a holder, so I can only get it so low on the tank. However, this did not seem to affect accuracy (based on one tank that ran out of propane). The device attaches with magnets and is easily removed and reattached.

2. When the tank is near-empty, the device emits a tone similar to a video game. The tone is continuous once it starts chirping until you shut off the tank valve. I found that I had about three 1/2-hour uses left once the alert started.

3. It requires two AA batteries.

So far, so good!

It works!!! We have had a pressure gauge type for some time now, but this only seems to show low pressure just before the gas runs out. So not much use if you are grilling anything other than a steak. After three or four grills on consecutive evenings the gasgenie started to flash and play a little tune. We finished cooking and decided to try again the next evening. It alarmed again. After the third time we went and refilled the tank which was by then nearly empty. It does exactly what the website says it will do.

This has solved the mystery of when I am getting close to empty.

Usually I try to see how heavy it is, or I try shaking it to get a sense of how much propane is left.

The gas genie detects when the gas is being used, and then if the level is low it makes its alarm sound. And it will do that a few times after the first alarm, allowing me plenty of time to go and get a refill.
