I was just checking in on Meatheads web site Amazingribs dot com and saw that he highly recommended these. But Im not the type that just goes out and buys cause someone says hey these are great. So I dug in and did some research on the product, read every review, great to mediocre and decided to pick them up.
I have a large family and grill alot for friends so I have a large grill area around 1100sq inches. One of the gripes Ive always had was hot spots, not that I couldnt work around that but when cooking for alot of people its a bit more difficult to get everything on and off at the same time. This product said it helped out with that and it does in a great way. Also temps get much hotter.
I picked up 6 grates to cover my whole grill area except a single infra red burner I have.
I got these just before Memorial Day weekend and grilled 3 times over the weekend and here are my results and set up experience.
Like I said I purchased 6, 18.5 units they fit together real nice and create a nice surface area across the grill. The only complaint I might have is I pulled my original grates off and put these in their place and if you have an issue or you want to get under the grate when they are hot its not the easiest thing to do to lift them up and get under them.
I hit them with a litte oil and fired up the grill to high, waited about 15 minutes the first time and these things got hot. My laser temp gun was like 650 degrees, that was way hotter than stock and the temps only varied by 40 degrees across the grill in certain areas. So that was a good start for the grates but was way to hot for the meat of the day so left the lid open and cooled off quicky to about 425.
So first meal was Brauts and to be honest it was a strange thing to cook several and not have any black charring on it from flame ups. Cooked 8 of them and they were all golden brown. All the juices that dripped on the grates incinerated immediately or boiled away quicky and helped flavor the food. So first meal went well.
Second was salmon. I cut up huge filet and marinated it and threw it on the grates it cooked great and fast. Was a little worried that the rails were going to be to far apart space wise cause the thiner parts of the fish is flimsy and could fall down between the grates but that wasnt the case it all layed out fine. One thing that was great was I could baste as much marinade on the fish as I wanted and no flare ups it was great. Fish was cooked to perfection and had some serious grill marks if your into that sort of thing. Looks good in a picture :-)
Well for the third meal I was gtting pretty confident that these could handle about what ever I threw at them so I was a bit ambitious and grilled 8, 14oz ribeyes at the same time (I'll post a pic). So I heated up the grill to that 650 degree range to cook these bad boys and threw them on after a little rub with olive oil and salt and pepper. All was going well and had cooked them on one side and flipped them, They looked like something right out of a grill bible. As I was down to like the last minute of cooking I had a serious fire going on below the grates so I was stressing out a bit cause I knew I probably shouldnt have done so many steaks at a time that had so much marbling. But funny thing was no flame ups came through I just shut off the grill and finished cooking them off and let them rest a few. The steaks were fantastic!!! So I still give them a total thumbs up. But back to the fire this is one problem I have with them like I said before in my case because I replaced my grates I cant just slide them around they are difficult to get under if you have a problem to deal with when they are hot because they are linked together. That may be the case with me just because I have 6 across where most folks I see have only 2 or 3. If you need to put out a fire a spray bottle will not work really well.
Anyway I give them a thumbs up. So far they have been great and clean up is a breeze. Great, even well distributed heat, no flare ups and prettymuch a nonstick surface. So if your on the fence on these things I say go for it.
