Here's the deal with this grill...I'm an engineer and this grill is probably the most logical layout for heating elements vs. placement for an electric grill. The heat is very even, much more so then any gas grill I've cooked on. You can only do so much with 110V and 15A normal house electrical supply in terms of grilling. This grill utilizes the most efficient layout that can be achieved with that electrical supply. The warm up time is to increase the thermal storage capacity of the grill grates/bars and help with searing. It does sear fairly okay and I've cooked on it twice. Is it anywhere near what a cheapo depot Weber imitation gas grill can even achieve in terms of high temp, searing, heat throwing capability? Heck no... I cooked marinated steak tips (flap meat) on it last night and they smoked and sizzled when i placed them on. Did they taste like they came off a charcoal or gas grill. Absolutely not. I cooked some whole chicken breasts afterwards and they had some nice grill marks on them. They cooked fairly quickly too. I also own the [Sanyo HPS-SG3 200-Square-Inch Electric Indoor Barbeque Grill, Black] which takes much longer to heat up and has a snowball's chance in hell of cooking any kind of steak unless it's paper thin. The sanyo does chicken breasts pretty well but you have to cut them thin in half and it takes much longer then the Dimplex.
Was I expecting more out of the Dimplex? Definitely. I've seen videos on youtube of the other Dimplex models and for all intents and purposes this is the same grill with a different set of electronic control elements. I wasn't going to shell out $600+ for a grill just because of the control electronics and some metal shelves. The Metro 120 has the same "grill engine" as the waaaay more expensive Dimplex models have so what's the point? In the end you're paying for the 120 sq inch 1600W heating grid which is the action area of the whole operation. The energy density doesn't change with the more expensive models. Why pay big bucks for extraneous items and a display that thinks it can cook better then a good grill master? No dice...
If you're looking for the best electric grill money can buy, this is it. Does it compare to gas or charcoal? No... I have yet to try the Weber Q electric grill but I've seen the heating element in that and it looks like all the other electric grills I've seen and probably cooks very unevenly. This grill is the most even heated cooking surface I've ever used outside of a cast iron pan on a gas stove. It's very amazing at that.
I did a lot of research before I purchased this grill. It's very well built. I looked at Meco, Weber, Napoleon, The cook number, and Kenyon$$$$. It's solid and has been very well designed. The sheet metal used in the construction is much more thick then one would think for a grill like this. It weighs over 30lbs and feels like it will last a lifetime. Make sure you put foil in the drip tray. Let the thing heat up for 10-15min on "10" before you put your meat on. Is it worth $250? Yes and no. The construction and design is worth it, the performance more like $100. I'm sure they are losing money on this grill even at $250, it's very well engineered. The 1600W cooking grid is the downfall to this piece of equipment which is not the fault of Dimplex. Stupid 110V 15A housing outlets!!!
