My old gas grill needed some new ceramic briquettes, so I went to the local store and had them in my buggy then I saw these Char-Broil Char-Diamonds, it said on the box they replace ceramic briquettes and lava rocks and cause the heat to be more even, so i fig what the hey and bought the box.
One thing I like is they are flat on one side and sit nice and even in the grill. Fired the grill up and noticed immediately difference! Grill seemed hotter and heat was more even. The burgers cooked very smoothly. I would now on only buy these and recommend them to any griller.

There are 44 Char-Broil Char-Diamonds in this bag. They are octagon shaped and 2 3/8th-inch in diameter. They diminish in size every year depending on how often they are used and the type of cleaning. And they are ash-gray, not green as pictured.
They are the best I've used in 40 years of grilling.
Granted, the product information page says that this bag will cover 367 sq. inches.
Most gas grills have a rectangular cooking service. Try laying out 44 briquettes in a rectangle without leaving gaping holes. This bag is perfect for 6 rows of 7 or vice versa. More than that and you will need two bags.
I can't over emphasize the importance of having clean, unbroken and evenly spaced briquettes for the perfect grilling session.
Years ago, I used a steel-wire brush and scrape. This is hard work and takes a long time and aggressively grinds away at the ceramic media. Aerosol oven and grill cleaner was a mess and never seemed to live up to the advertisements.
Some folks soak the briquettes over night in a good detergent. Some use baking soda.
I've never had satisfactory results with this method. Too much elbow grease is still needed to remove the baked on carbon deposits.
The best cleaning solution I've found is a product called Smoke House Cleaner. I started using it 17 years ago with outstanding results. It is used primarily in commercial smoke house and BBQ operations and is sold in bulk quantity, usually six, one-gallon jugs for about $120.00. I still have enough left out of my original 5 gallon bucket for one more year of cleaning. Simply soak the briquettes over night in a plastic bucket. The next day, rinse with a water hose and allow to dry and they are as clean as new. No sweat and no mess and your Char-Diamonds will last an extra year or two.
Good luck and happy grilling.

My home depot propane grill is of the metal heat shield design, rather than the classic ceramic / lava rock flare suppression all propane grills came with years ago.I ordered a bag of these, along with a charbroil replacement porcelain grate, and with a few sheet metal screws I installed these grates midway between the burners and grill frame.
Arranged in a grid, I no longer have flareups from my burgers & steaks, and have much better evenness of heat as well. My grill now operates better than when it was new because of this personal upgrade.
