I purchased this thermometer with the intention of replacing the broken one on our BGE grill, but found the diameter of the probe to be too large for the stock BGE thermometer hole. This thermometer requires a 3/8" dia. mounting hole. The threaded section of the thermometer probe is 1 inch long and the overall length of the probe is 2 1/4". The dial is 2 1/2" dia.

As another reviewer noted, it's easy to twist the dial's backing while holding it to tighten the 3/8" nut. When the dial backing twists, it's fudges the temp reading on the backing. I could move it back & forth to "calibrate" it again, but this unit should really have a backstop nut area on the top of the threaded area, so one can backstop the stem while tightening the lower nut.

Also, the Amazon image of the product shows a SS flat washer that was not in my packaging; the instructions that come with it indicate that a wing nut is included (it wasn't) and the instructions say to "HAND TIGHTEN ONLY", and they mean it.

I have not used it for grilling yet, so I can't speak to its operating accuracy nor longevity. But installing it is fussier than it ought to be, that's for certain.

I bought this because I wanted to at least have some idea of what the temperature inside my grill was. I simply drilled a hole in the lid opposite the vents and bolted this thermometer in. It seems close to accurate, I had a cheap one I would set in on the grate, and they seem to around the same temps (not on direct heat). Close enough for the grilling I do. I slow cooked a roast and was able to bring the temperature down using the vents and actually know where the temperature is at on the grill Or at least give me a good estimate so I didn't char-broil the poor roast. Works great, only gripe is a little bit of moisture in on the glass, and now I just have to be careful with the lid, as I hear these are easy to break.

I bought this to install on my newly purchased smoker. The smoker was without a thermometer. I checked this against several other calibrated thermometers and it is off by about 10 degrees. At least once calibrated it was consistent... off the same 10 degrees at three different temp points. Most dial thermometers will never be as accurate as a digital probe thermometer placed close to the actual cooking spot, but at least having some means of temperature measurement on the unit isn't bad.
