I have a gas grill that used the "flame covers" and I wanted to discard them and add ceramic bricks in place of them .Took two minutes to adjust to the size needed over my burners and after cooking 3 meals I realize I have just gained another year or two out of a 3 year old grill and the food is as close as you can get to a regular charcoal taste for a very small investment.Best Deals for GrillPro 91250 Universal Fit Adjustable Rock Grate
Purchased this grill yesterday. The grill itself is not adjustable. It is one solid piece. ONly the two metal "flaps" adjust making it possible to increase the length only. The package indicated the grill itself was adjustable. After fussing with this for some time trying to get the double grill apart, I gave up convinced the grill was simply one piece since the entire grill was welded as one piece. If this grill is adjustable, I must have purchased one that is not adjustable. That being said, extending the metal "flaps" worked perfectly for me as the width was fine. It was only the length I needed. Extending the "flaps" gave me the length I needed and grill fits perfectly.
Used ceramic briquettes.
ceramic briquettes or lava rock is easy to find. Menard's carries both items although Lowe's does not carry either. I think Menard's is limited to the upper Midwest but not sure.

I've been using this rock grate for a month now. Unfortunately, my grill is on the upper limit of the GrillPro's extension and I find that it occasionally collapses on itself, making a mess of rocks for me to clean up. I would recommend this product for smaller gas grills.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for GrillPro 91250 Universal Fit Adjustable Rock Grate
This grate is heavier than it looks, but be warned it's smaller than you might expect. It really only expands in one direction at a time, it won't realistically expand length and width, but only length OR width. If you expand it too far it splits into two pieces and can be a pain to get back together again.
Measure your grill before ordering to make sure it's large enough. 3 burner and larger grills may need two of these. I made the stupid mistake of not measuring before ordering. This doesn't come close to being big enough to retrofit my CharGriller 3001 to use a grate and ceramic briquettes instead of the heat tents it came with.
I had to buy two smaller grates and use this to span the middle to get it to work. In hindsight I'd order a grate with the proper depth and then cut it to the proper width as needed. I'll probably end up doing that at some point.
If you really want the adjustability to avoid cutting anything and have more than a small grill buy at least two and make sure you have the proper mounting tabs in your grill to support them both.
Either way my food tastes better now that it gets nice and smokey when the drippings hit the hot briquettes like a BBQ is supposed to be. Closer to charcoal without the hassle.
