If you're are cooking mainly burgers, steaks, and chicken you will not need this. However, for low and slow briskets and pork butts it is a must. Just put the meat on one side and leave the access hatch open on the other side. You will be able to quickly add fuel without losing a lot of heat. You can bbq a mean brisket in a weber if that is what you have to work with. This grate makes life so much easier for those long cook times.

Well, not much to say about this item. It's obviously very functional and I'm left wondering why Weber doesn't just make this the defacto grate for all of it's kettles.

It's rock solid steel, quite hefty for it's size I'd say. The hinges are well made and it's quite useful for long-term indirect cooking. Good for party BBQs as well, since you often run low on fuel cooking a lot of meat.

I only have one complaint and since it's not really a product failure, I'm giving 5 stars: The thing needs it's own box to ship in. Mine came in a 4'x3'x2' (1.3m x 1m x .7m) cardboard box with enough airbags to choke a dozen donkeys. Get a grip Weber and give this to your suppliers in a form fitted box so the environment doesn't have to suffer!

It's very hard to deny how useful this hinged cooking grate is, especially for those of us that do a lot of indirect grilling and/or smoking with our Weber kettles.

I have the One-Touch Silver, so I didn't get mine out of the box. I didn't even know this clever grate existed until right after my purchase. If you have the One-Touch Silver (or thinkin' about gettin one) then it's way worth your investment to grab one of these.

Here is how indirect cooking worked for me before this:

Do the usual, start the fire, coals ash over and then pile em up on the sides for indirect cooking. Well, i'm cookin' some ribs so this will take awhile... 45 mins to an hour pass by... crap it's time to replenish the coals. Now I have to take this burning hot grate off, hope my food doesn't fall off in the process, hope I don't accidently burn the dog, set this hellfire piece of metal in a safe place, once it's in that safe place (usually on the concrete slab I call a patio) I realize that I forgot to put the dog in the house so now i'm fightin' the dog with my foot as I try to replenish the coals. The dog grabs a slab of ribs and takes off so I have to chase him, meanwhile my food is still on the ground, the burning coals are still in the chimney starter so while I chase the dog he runs into my grill which causes my chimney starter to fall and coals go flying everywhere. The dog gets scared, drops the ribs in the mud and runs away, running over all my food with his muddy feet. I miss grabbing one hidden coal so the entire neighborhood goes up in flames.

Okay, that story is a bit far fetched and never actually happened, but the point is, it's much easier to just lift up the hinged sides and put the coals right into the kettle!

One last thing, outside of the hinges, the overall quality of this grate is much better then the standard one-touch silver grate. The bars are quite a bit thicker and are just a better quality. For some reason my grill marks are comin' out much nicer, too!

if you are even thinkin' about buying this... then BUY IT! I swear that you will be happy with your purchase.

When I am cooking ribs or a chicken which can take a few hours, you definately will have to add fresh charcoal. The beauty of this grate is that you can add more fuel without removing the grate which puts you at risk for losing you food on the floor. Simply lift up one corner of the grate and add prelit coals.

For best results use the Weber Chimney starter to start your coals.

What a fantastic idea Weber has with this new grill accessory. Before we purchased this grate in order to add charcoal my husband would take the tongs and have to lift out the entire grate resulting in burned fingers or burn marks on the deck railing where he would lay the hot thing. Now he simply flips up the hinges and adds the charcoal directly to the kettle. Thank you Weber.
