I originally saw this device on Americas Test Kitchen and they gave it a good review. I have several meat thermometers and I found this one to be accurate based on testing with other ones I have. I also like the fact that it has menus for each kind of meat you are cooking. One of my many faults is that I can't always remember what temperature a meat should be when it is supposed to be rare or well done. Once you figure out how to use this (pretty easy) it is really helpful as is the alarm sound when the meat is at the correct temperature . How long will it last? That remains to be seen. But for now it gets a 5 out of 5

I've had fast and accurate thermometers that were too short to use on high temp cooks on the grill. Either they'd shut down due to the heat or I'd have to fetch the gloves just to get a temperature. Not with this one.

It's long enough to hold comfortably away from the heat. It's fast and the light up display is going to be a big help as summer gives way to fall. I thought it's accuracy was off on my first try, so I checked against my old, short "tried and true" that always shorts out in the heat and it was right on the money.

I'm very pleased with this purchase so far. If you want a long reach fast reading thermometer, I would recommend it.

Saw Alton Brown using something similar to this. I really don't know how I have done without this. Very long and thin probe means no heating up of your extremities while using and does not poke a big hole in the meat. Senses quickly and you can choose which type of meat, poultry, etc., and the temp you want the meat to come out at and it sends out a little 'alarm' when your meat is at the perfect temp. Great for bbq'ing or in the oven. Highly recommend

We have a wide variety of tastes in my house about how well-done meat should be cooked. Rather than leave it to chance I like to use a meat thermometer so I can please everyone. The Polder is a replacement of an earlier and much more compact unit that died when it got left out in the rain.

The Polder works very well. Quick response, lighted display, runs on standard AAA batteries no crazy button batteries that you can't find when you need them, has presets for various meats and levels of doneness. All in all it works well and does what you want an instant read thermometer to do. Oh, and it is a lovely shade of red.

What don't I like. Well, when it is folded for storage it is 12.5 inches long and because of the shape of the unit, it takes up a lot of space in the kitchen drawer.

Am I happy with the unit? Yes, otherwise not a 4 star rating. Would I be happier if it were not so large? Yes, but I'm not unhappy either.

If storage space is a concern for you, I'd look for something more compact. If not, one big advantage of this unit is the ability to take readings from meat on a hot grille without burning the hair right off your hand. Oh, and the nice red color means you're less likely to leave it out on the deck when overnight to get rained on, not that I ever did that.

Works better than my old one. I expected that when something is instant read, I wouldn't have to wait for the temp to rise. It's quicker than my previous one, but you still have to wait for at least 10 seconds for it to read accurate temp. Also, to turn off alarm, you push the meat select button. This means that if you have multiple pieces of the same meat to check, you have to re select meat type each time you check another piece if alarm goes off
